It is kind of funny. Many folks are asking what is wrong with Jordan Spieth? I like Jordan but I’m don’t have any inside knowledge on “what’s wrong” with Jordan. I would say that there is nothing wrong with him. He has added about 20 yards to his drives. 2 years ago when Jordan won 5 times on the PGA tour his driver wasn’t an asset. It didn’t hurt him but it wasn’t all that helpful. In contrast, Dustin Johnson’s driver is a huge weapon. He (Dustin) won at Oakmont by driving the ball 310, 320 or 330 yards into the fairway.
So, Jordan is getting more out of his swing. He won earlier this year at Pebble Beach. He has played well but has had trouble with the driver. He has put up some big numbers (double and triple bougies). He was in position at the Master’s but had trouble with putting up a big number that he couldn’t overcome. At the US Open he was never really a factor as he had trouble hitting the fairway but he played well on Sunday. So coming into the Travelers there really wasn’t high expectations.
He came out of the gates red hot with a 63 on Thursday. He played pretty well on Friday and Saturday. He was leading the Travelers coming into today. He birdied the first 2 holes to jump out to a 3 stroke lead. Then the wheels seemed to be coming off the cart. He struggled the rest of the day. His driver was all over the place. 15 is an excellent example of his troubles. He decides not to use driver on the 296 yard drivable par 4. He uses his 3 wood and the ball heads left rather than fading right. The ball almost lands in the water. Instead he is in the rough. He punches out of the rough to 16 feet from the hole. He hits his putt and thinks that the ball was going to miss right instead it goes in the hole.
Somehow, Jordan ends up in a playoff with Daniel Berger who was playing great golf on Sunday. They both hit their tee shots left. Berger is in the tall rough. Jordan is so far left that he hits a tree and the ball bounces back into the fairway. Jordan has over 220 yards to the green. He hits a 5 iron and leaves it in the front bunker. Berger hits a great shot onto the left side of the green and the ball wanders into a little depression just left of the green. Jordan from the bunker hits a phenomenal shot.
Notice the sportsmanship that Daniel Berger shows. I tip my hat to Berger. That’s class. (We don’t see that enough in pro sports!)
Gutsy performance from Jordan Spieth!!! Congratulations Jordan on your 10th PGA win!
