Dems - New Ideas

What is the purpose of government?  I have discussed this topic with liberals and conservatives.  It is my opinion, that the government is to help those people who need a little help.  A little help.  The government should also keep us safe.  That’s about it.

The Center for American Progress unveiled new ideas to move America forward.  Their 3 main points

  • Opportunity for all
  • Promoting a Just and Secure World
  • Building Strong Communities

New Trend - Men not workin’

From the NY Times.comFrom the NY Times:  Millions of men like Mr. Beggerow — men in the prime of their lives, between 30 and 55 — have dropped out of regular work. They are turning down jobs they think beneath them or are unable to find work for which they are qualified, even as an expanding economy offers opportunities to work.

About 13 percent of American men in this age group are not working, up from 5 percent in the late 1960’s. The difference represents 4 million men who would be working today if the employment rate had remained where it was in the 1950’s and 60’s.

“These are men forced to compete to get back into the work force, and even then they cannot easily reconstruct what many lost in a former job,” said Thomas A. Kochan, a labor and management expert at the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “So they stop trying.”

This adds to the data that the unemployment rate is much higher than the numbers that our government is quoting.

New Census

From the NY Times: The number of immigrants living in American households rose 16 percent over the last five years, fueled largely by recent arrivals from Mexico, according to fresh data released by the Census Bureau.

And increasingly, immigrants are bypassing the traditional gateway states like California and New York and settling directly in parts of the country that until recently saw little immigrant activity — regions like the Upper Midwest, New England and the Rocky Mountain States.

Coming in the heart of an election season in which illegal immigration has emerged as an issue, the new data from the bureau’s 2005 American Community Survey is certain to generate more debate. But more than that, demographers said, it highlights one reason immigration has become such a heated topic.

So, what policies have been put in place to fix this?  I’m just askin’?

Everyone declares victory

Everyside has begun to push their PR media blitz.  Israel has declared victoryPresident Bush has declared victory (I’m still looking for that video and I don’t know why can’t find it).  The Syrian president declared victory.  Now the leader of Hezbollah has declared victory.  One thing is for certain, victory is difficult to measure.  Especially in this struggle.  If missiles quit raining down on Israel — Israel wins.  If Israel continues to exist, Israel wins.  Since the goal of Hezbollah, Iran and Syria is the destruction of Israel it’s hard to see how they actually have come out victorious.

TDS take on Leiberman staying in the race

Interesting take on Joe Lieberman by The Daily Show. I was figuring that the money would dry up for Joe Lieberman and he would have to drop out of the race but then I saw this story in the New York Times. It seems there is some problems between the Republicans and the Republican candidate.
