Did Senator Allen really say that?
It is kind of strange what our politicians say when they’re surrounded by “their own”. Remember Senator Lott waxing poetically about Senator Strom Thurmond. Senator Lott said, “I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.” After a firestorm of criticism, Senator Trent Lott apologized on the floor of the Senate and tried to restate his case that he was not being racist.
Now we have Senator Allen, Republican from Virginia, who is running for reelection. He is speaking in front of a crowd of approximately 100 Virginians, all potential donors. Everyone has heard his statement to the only non-white person in the crowd, an American of Indian descent. But his next comment, is the one that I find most offensive. It is the one where he welcomes this man, an American, to the United States.
