Franken on Hardball and the NIE

Tony Blankley, editor of the Washington Times, argues that be NIE makes sense.  He argues that the Jahadists will follow the sound of the gun.  This seems to contradict what we know about the insurgency.  Although, Al Franken did not make this point, the insurgency has been hitting soft targets.  They have been avoiding direct confrontation with American forces.  This is the way all insurgency’s work.  They look for a spot of weakness.  An electrical plant or a telephone communications station or civilians at their place of worship or civilians in a crowded bus — these other targets that insurgencies choose.  Insurgencies do not follow the sound of the gun, they run away from it.  Al Franken’s points are excellent.  Take a listen.

State of Denial

The NY Times broke this story yesterday.  Here’s Olbermann’s take.

Bush hot about the NIE

storybushafghcnn Bush hot about the NIEFrom CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — An angry President Bush Tuesday said he would declassify an intelligence document that reportedly finds that the Iraq war increased the terrorist threat to the United States.

The president said the media accounts of the leak of the National Intelligence Estimate were meant to “create confusion in the minds of the American people” and suggested that the report had been leaked for political purposes.

During a joint White House press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Bush said he has ordered Director of National Security John Negroponte to declassify the report’s key findings . (Full story)

Senator Allen is having trouble shaking that racist label

From Salon:

WASHINGTON — A former football teammate of Sen. George Allen decided Friday to go on the record with recollections of the Virginia Republican’s alleged racist behavior during college.

Edward J. Sabornie, a special education professor at North Carolina State University, had previously spoken to Salon about Allen’s behavior on the condition of anonymity, because he feared retribution from the Allen campaign. In a Salon story on Sunday, Sabornie was quoted as a “teammate” who remembered Allen using the word “nigger” to describe blacks. “It was so common with George when he was among his white friends. This is the terminology he used,” Sabornie said in that article.

Sabornie said he has now decided to let his name be known because he was upset by how Allen responded this week to the Salon story. “What George said on Monday really kind of inflamed me — that it was ‘ludicrously false’ that he ever used the N-word,” Sabornie told Salon. “I don’t know how George can look himself in the mirror after saying that.”  More.

————-

Again, the cover-up is usually worse than the offense.  If Senator Allen would have come out and said I didn’t know any better I was a foolish moron in college and I use the “N” word frequently.  Subsequently, after graduation, I have grown up.  I’ve learned that this world is full of many people and they all deserve to be treated with respect.  If Senator Allen was said that, there would’ve been an initial firestorm within a would’ve died down.  Instead, this has blown up.  In the early 1970s, the South was changing.  But there’s one tradition in the South and hasn’t changed, we respect honesty.  We despise deceit and lying.

Another school shooting

Earlier this week there was a school shooting in Colorado.  This time it is in Wisconsin.  Again, we have the typical reporting of a student who just walks into a school and starts shooting.  When are we going to get some security for schools?  According to earlier reports, the student walked in school with both a pistol and a rifle.  Shouldn’t we have a way to detect people who are walking in to schools with firearms?

There are a ton of problems in our schools today.  We have overcrowding.  We have teachers are overworked and underpaid.  Teachers are expected to be mothers and fathers as well as educators for some kids.  Oh, and I shouldn’t forget, teachers are asked to be police officers also.  They’re asked to rid our schools of drugs.  The schools themselves are underfunded.  Our whole educational system needs to be overhauled.  There hasn’t been a significant change in our schools and the way we deliver information to students for over a hundred years.  If education is important, and it should be, we have to do better.

Iraqi Ambush

Frighting video from a Halliburton truck driver who was ambushed.  It seems like the common problem is that no one knows where to go.  They turned down a dead-end street.  Probably a common mistake.  This is the same way that Jessica Lynch was injuried and captured.

Yep, we can torture

In a move that just makes me ill the Senate has approved a bill that allows torture.  I just can’t beleive it.  I thought that we were the good guys.  I thought we wore the white hats.  Obviously, I was wrong.  We will do anything in the name of “security.”  Although the bill outlaws torture it gives the president the right to use “aggressive techniques” which is a euphemism for torture.  The bill gives the president the power to decide what’s appropriate and what is not.

Who looks out for working families?

NC Republicans in the Do-Nothing Republican Congress Refuse to Extend Middle Class Tax Cuts
NC Democrats Lowered Taxes for Working Families

Raleigh–The cost of living may be going up for middle class families in North Carolina, but that’s not stopping North Carolina Republicans in the Do-Nothing Congress from blocking Democratic efforts to extend critical middle class tax cuts. In the past two weeks alone, Democrats in the Senate have tried to extend a range of tax benefits that include the college tuition tax deduction, the state and local sales tax deduction, and the Research and Development (R&D) tax credit.  The Bush Republicans in the Do-Nothing Congress blocked them each time.

While the average cost of a college education has soared by 44 percent during the Bush Administration, Senate Republicans like Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr are raising taxes on 3.6 million Americans, including 90,237 in North Carolina, by blocking Democratic efforts to extend the college tuition tax deduction.  By refusing to extend a tax provision that allows teachers to deduct out of pocket expenses, the Bush Republicans in the Senate are raising taxes on 3.3 million teachers-including 97,654 in North Carolina.

In the House, Democrats have fought to increase the child tax credit to $1,100, to provide more tax relief through marriage penalty relief and the 10 percent rate cut, and to exempt all middle-income families from the Alternative Minimum Tax. [H.R. 4359, Vote 208, 5/20/04; H.R. 4275, 5/13/04; H.R. 4181, 4/28/04; H.R. 4227, 5/5/04] Representatives Charles Taylor, Robin Hayes, Sue Myrick, Walter Jones, and Howard Coble all voted against this tax relief. Democrats have tried to lower health care costs for small businesses through a 50 percent tax credit to help small businesses and the self-employed buy health care coverage. [H.R. 2073]  House Republicans have refused to act on these critical middle class tax cuts.

Bush Republicans and the rest of the Republican Do-Nothing Congress are all talk, but no action when it comes to cutting taxes for middle class families,” said North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek.  “While Democrats have fought to extend middle class tax cuts that would protect the economic security of teachers, homeowners and parents, Republicans like Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr have consistently blocked those efforts.”

Republicans want to run North Carolina like they’re running Washington.  In our state, Democrats passed a budget that lowered the income tax rate and sales tax rate to benefit working families.  And, unlike the big spenders in Washington, North Carolina Democrats balanced the budget.  Guess who were the only legislators to oppose it?  Republicans.

Olbermann - pre-9/11 what did the Bush Adminstration really do

Oh, now he’s done done it.  Keith Olbermann and the folks at Countdown has put together exactly what the Bush administration was given prior to 9/11.  I had some specific examples listed on my website.  But it’s a little bit different when they list the exact documents.  The one thing that I was not aware of was that Osama bin Laden may have been offered to the Bush administration in February of 2001!  This is major.  Ari Fleischer was asked a question in February about an offer from Sudan brokered through Saudi Arabia to give up bin Laden.  Ari Fleischer states that he’ll get back to the reporter and there is no record that he ever brought up the subject again.  Interesting.  (The first several minutes need to be edited off of this but, because of my own time constraints, I thought it’s best that I posted now.)

Rice and the Bush administration come out swinging

Now we get to play the old familiar game he should she said.  President Clinton said on Fox News Sunday that the Bush administration was given a comprehensive anti-terror plan.  Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice fired back in an interview with the New York Post.  She states that the Bush administration was not given a plan.  So what are we to believe?  On one hand we have President Clinton who is trying to set the record straight and trying to clear his name.  On the other hand, we have the Bush administration which has only one in a row in its quiver.  That arrow is terror.  If the Bush administration is not fighting terror as vigorously as they would like us to believe they would be in a great deal of trouble with the midterm elections.  Therefore, each party has a reason to bend the truth.

What data do we have to help us with this conundrum?  Well, there’s the 9/11 commission report.  The report seems to support President Clinton’s assertion that the Bush administration was given a plan and a report seems to be devoid of any actions that the Bush administration took prior to 9/11.  Is there any other evidence?  Well there is the book The Price of Loyalty which was about Paul O’Neill’s time in the Bush Cabinet.  This book notes that there are no high level principals meeting on Osama bin Laden prior to September of 2001.  This seems to support President Clinton’s assertions.  There of course is Richard Clarke’s book, Against All Enemies, which conservatives like to attack but the bottom line is the data contained within the book, the actual facts, are not in dispute.  The 9/11 Commission clearly supports Richard Clarke’s view of what happened in the Bush administration prior to 9/11.  There’s even more evidence, the fact that the Bush administration does not point to any solid event or press conference or press release or meeting suggests that they had a completely and totally different agenda when they came into the White House.

Do you remember what Donald Rumsfeld was pushing prior to 9/11?  The missile defense shield!

When is a suicide attempt not a sucide attempt

As we all know by now, Terrell Owens has officially denied trying to kill himself.  He actually spent 2 hours catching passing with Dallas QB Drew Bledsoe.  So, who knows the real story.  My thoughts - If Terrell Owens needs psychiatric help, I hope that he gets it.  Otherwise, let’s move on.

Let take up the airwaves with important topics like Dallas winning the SuperBowl or Bush finally really and truly trying to catch Bin Laden.

Addendum: so, the inevitable press conference.  We’re told not to believe what you’ve seen or what you’ve heard.  Spin.  Spin.  Spin.  Here’s Terrell Owens is press conference.  I have edited most of it because… it’s mostly drivel.

Terrell Owens

The exact information is somewhat sketchy but it appears from reports from the Dallas Morning News and WFAA and AP - it appears that Terrell Owens may have tried to take his own life.  He may have taken an overdose of pain medications.  My hopes and prayers are with Mr. Owens.

Democrats hold hearings on Iraq failures

The failures of this administration are too numerous to name.  The failure specifically on the Iraq invasion and the Iraq occupation are unfortunately also too numerous to name.  The Democrats held hearings to try to underscore the multiple problems in Iraq.  Not enough troops.  Unable to close and seal the borders.  Not recognizing that we were fighting an insurgency.  No unified authority.  Not enough of the right equipment.  Not enough resources to rebuild the country and to protect the citizens. Finally, not enough of the right troops — insurgencies are best thought with special forces.

TDS - Clinton

Clinton was everywhere over the last several days.  Man, what a breath of fresh air.  For Christmas, I would like a President who wants to help the poor and underprivileged.  I would like a president who wants to work for a healthier American population.  Finally, I would like a president who cares for all Americans.

Clips from the NIE

“The Iraq conflict has become the cause celebre for jihadists, breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement. Should jihadists leaving Iraq perceive themselves, and be perceived, to have failed, we judge fewer fighters will be inspired to carry on the fight.”

Four underlying factors are fueling the spread of the jihadist movement: (1) Entrenched grievances, such as corruption, injustice, and fear of Western domination, leading to anger, humiliation, and a sense of powerlessness; (2) the Iraq jihad;. (3) the slow pace of real and sustained economic, social, and political reforms in many Muslim majority nations; and (4) pervasive anti-US sentiment among most Muslims all of which jihadists exploit.”

So how does this help the Republicans?  Are these guys, the guys who wrote the NIE, stupid, uneducated, uninformed, naïve or any of the labels that the president has used?
