Pentagon directive — conform to Geneva

No secrets here.  The only question is why did it take so long?  As the United States of America, we must be, always on higher ground.  We always must be on a higher moral ground that our enemies.  It served us well in World War II.  It served us well in the Vietnam War.  Hell, even served us well in the Revolutionary war.  When you look back on the whole debate, I am flabbergasted that the administration actually argued against following the Geneva conventions.  I had neocons call me unpatriotic for saying we should stand on the higher moral ground.  Their one and only argument, was a theoretical terrorist who knew where the bomb was planted and wouldn’t talk.  Here’s the problem with that stupid analogy, torture does not equal good information.  This has been proven in the past and it has been proven recently.  The capture of Zubaydah, who we tortured, gave us a ton of meaningless information.

Secret prisons

okay, what’s going on?  The secret prison revelations were revealed back in January of this year, if I’m not mistaken.  The Bush administration vigorously attacked the reporters and neither denied nor confirmed the existence of the program.  Why is he revealing the program now?  Is he trying to show that he is doing something in the War on Terror?

Where’s the Outrage? 9/2/06

Rep. Susan Fisher’s shout out

Dear volunteers and core supporters of Rep. Susan Fisher for NC House,

9 weeks until Election Day! The Committee to Elect Susan Fisher needs your help to re-elect our hard-working, progressive Representative to the NC House. For District 114, this election is a choice between progressive, responsive leadership and irresponsible, extremist rhetoric. There are important issues at stake. Susan’s opponent has never been elected to public office, so he has no record, but it is clear that his positions on the issues are not representative of the majority of people in our district. And he has already shown willingness to “go negative,” with unfounded attacks on Susan early in the campaign season.

We need your help to deflect this mudslinging and reach voters with our positive, progressive, issue-focused message. We will be going door-to-door, making phone calls, reaching out through the media, and organizing get-out-the-vote efforts from now until Election Day. JOIN US! You can find out more about the campaign by visiting our website, online at http://www.electsusanfisher.com (For more go to her web site!!)

Justice Kennedy having heart trouble

from CNN:

After suffering from mild heart pain over the weekend, Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy was hospitalized for a “routine procedure” to keep an artery open, the court said.

Doctors inserted a stent Saturday to supplement a stent placed in the artery about 10 months ago. The associate justice was released from the Washington Hospital Center on Sunday and was back at work Tuesday.

A stent is a short, metal mesh tube used to keep arteries open. more

I wish him well.  I can’t imagine Bush chosing another Justice to the Supreme Court.  Just thinking about it, I’m getting chest pain.

Bush plays terror card, again

Amazing.  5 years after the President wanted Bin Laden dead or alive.  Bin Laden is still alive.  The president stopped talking about him.  He was only one man.  The president then “didn’t spend much time on him.”  Now, he (Bin Laden) is important again.

(sorry about the still photo.  I’ll try and fix it tomorrow.)

Been gone

As usual, when you leave the office, all hell breaks loose.  I really didn’t leave the office but I did go out of town for a few days.  I spent some time with the family.  While I was gone, Andre Agassi loses and Tiger wins, again.  The US Olympic team again proves that putting a bunch of superstars together may not be the best way to play international basketball.  The war in Iraq drags on.  The Bush administration continues to throw sticks at Iran.  The Iranian government throws stones back at us.  UN peacekeepers move into southern Lebanon with no real hope of being able to keep the peace.

As I traveled to Texas, the amount of holiday traffic was remarkably light.  Planes that were normally packed, were relatively empty.  It will be interesting to find out what the final numbers were of the Americans that traveled over the Labor Day holiday but I suspect the amount of traveling once decreased over years past.

On another note, what is up with the gas prices?  We were told that gas prices were getting ready to continue to climb above $3.50 a gallon.  But yet, in recent days, the price of gas has decreased significantly.  Why?  The British petroleum pipeline is still broken in Alaska.  There is still instability in the Middle East.  No new refineries have been built in United States.  These were all given his reasons for increasing gas prices.  If anything, the rhetoric between the United States and Iran has increased.  Thus threatening a major world supplier of oil.  Maybe, all of the reasons that we’ve been given for the increase in price of oil has been a smokescreen.  The real reason may be something incredibly simple - greed.  I don’t know, I’m just guessing.
