Representative Susan Fisher Decries Republican Internet Scam

Today Buncombe County Republican Party Chair George Keller was implicated in a scandal involving a fraudulent website which attempts to mislead voters in Buncombe County. The website purports to represent an “independent” organization; the organization seems not actually to exist and the website is actually the work of members of the Buncombe County Republican Party.

The site claims to be associated with a group called the “North Carolina Independent Public Policy Research Group (NCIPPRG),” which, the site claims, surveys and ranks legislators on how effective they are. The group’s name is strikingly similar to the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization which is well-known for publishing an annual report ranking legislators. Both the authentic and the knock-off sites have lists of legislators ranked by effectiveness. The significant difference between the two lists is the elevating of the “effectiveness ratings” of Republican legislators and the low ratings of Buncombe County Democratic lawmakers, who were never surveyed by the sham organization.

Bush moves prisoners to Gitmo

From WaPo

With a series of forceful speeches on terrorism and a dramatic announcement that he has sent top-tier terrorism suspects to the Guantanamo Bay prison, President Bush this week has demonstrated anew the power of even a weakened commander in chief to set the terms of national debate.

All week, the White House has made plain its desire to refocus the attention of voters this fall away from a troubled and unpopular war in Iraq in favor of Bush’s vision of a worldwide struggle against Islamic radicalism and terrorism. Yesterday, Bush sought to turn a legal defeat at the Supreme Court into a political opportunity.

By challenging Congress to immediately give the administration authority to try notorious al-Qaeda figures such as Khalid Sheik Mohammed by military commissions, he shifted the argument with Democratic critics of national security policies and competence. As Bush framed the choice, anyone against his proposal would be denying him necessary tools to protect American security. (more)

——-

It seems to me that Bush is admitting that secret prisons were not a good idea.  He is admitting that he does not have the authority to torture prisoners.  He is admitting that he has to go to Congress.

Tiger is really good

From: APVijah Singh started last Sunday with a 3 stroke lead.  Cool.  I’m not afraid of Tiger.  I’m one of the best playing.  You could almost see him saying exactly that.  Unfortunately, he is one of the best that is playing today, not one of the best ever.  7 holes later he is one stroke back and Tiger is one stroke ahead.  It wasn’t that Tiger made up a 3 stroke deficit in 7 holes, it was how he made up that deficit.  2 eagles.  Everytime Vijay tried to make a move Tiger would counter.  Amazing performance.

Five victories in five tournaments.  Or seven victories in 14 tournaments, either way, Tiger is on an amazing run.

Elizabeth Taylor said,”the definition of a superstar is someone you simply can’t take your eyes off of.”  Tiger fits that definition.

Vet speaks out against Doolittle (great name for a congressman)

This was written by a Vet. I found it on the Daily Kos.

DOOLITTLE KNOWS VERY LITTLE ABOUT “SUPPORTING THE TROOPS”

I read Congressmen Doolittle’s recent Op-Ed (”Support Our Troops, Don’t Exploit Them“) while home from duty overseas. As an Iraq War veteran, I found his claims of support for our military men and women, and his comments about Charlie Brown infuriating.

Doolittle suggests that if you do not agree with the political decision to go to war, then you do not support the troops. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I’ve traveled all over this country, and met people both for and against the war. Regardless of which side they fall on, everyone I meet supports the warriors. Many send care packages, body armor and helmets. Others advocate for veterans rights or volunteer to help homeless veterans and families coping with the absence of a loved one. Actions speak louder than words.

Career politicians like Doolittle say they support us, because that’s all they can do. Yet their voting records, official actions, and appalling misuse of taxpayer dollars tell a very different story. Veterans, both past and present, are not fooled by the empty rhetoric. (written by Iraqi War Vet, Jeff Brown, Ramstein AB, Germany; his letter continues…)

A representative government

You want a more representative government, right?  One that is transparent and accountable, yes? You want elected officials who care about serving you, “the people”, versus serving themselves and their monied interests?

Well then, we need your help. It’s that simple.

This Saturday, September 9, from 9 to 2, Asheville Democracy for America is going to walk our talk — we are going to canvass in West Asheville for our endorsed candidates, NC House Rep. Susan Fisher  www.electsusanfisher.com and Buncombe County Sheriff candidate Van Duncan, www.vanduncan.com.

We’ll get together at the West End Bakery at 757 Haywood Road in West Asheville (http://www.onhaywood.com/westendbakery/) at 9:00 am for coffee, muffins, and a brief orientation before we hit the streets and start knocking doors.  If you can volunteer for this canvass,  please let us know by emailing btrigg@electsusanfisher.com, or just show up if you decide at the last minute.

Don’t worry if you aren’t quite sure about canvassing. We can pair you with an experienced hand.  Mark Hufford, the NC Democratic Party Western Political Director and former Field Director for the Patsy Keever campaign, will be joining us, along with Susan Fisher.  This should be a good time for all!

Look forward to joining with you in taking back our country, county by county,
