New racial tensions

It was interesting report lost deep in the CNN archives.  According to the report Blacks and Latinos are fighting for low paying jobs.  Interesting stereotypes slip out of the men and women in this clip.

Nobel Peace Prize 2006

From NYT:

The 2006 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh and its founder, Muhammad Yunus, for pioneering microcredit — using loans of tiny amounts to transform destitute women into entrepreneurs.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Dr. Yunus and Grameen for their “efforts to create economic and social development from below.”

Though it is not the first time the committee has chosen to honor economic development as a contribution to world peace, rather than the more usual diplomacy, rights advocacy or philanthropy, it is the first time the prize has been awarded to a profit-making business.

The selection seemed to embody two connected ideas that are gaining ground among development experts: that attacking poverty is essential to peace, and that private enterprise is essential to attacking poverty.

Dr. Yunus founded the bank in his native Bangladesh to lend small amounts of cash — often as little as $20 — to local people, almost always women, who could use it to found or sustain a small business by, say, buying a cow to sell milk or a simple sewing machine to make clothing.  more

Outstanding choice!  Someone who thinks outside of the box in order to make the world a better place.

Santana - Smooth

I don’t know, I don’t know why I like some songs and others I don’t.  Why some songs really don’t hit me and others are just infectious.  Smooth is one of those songs.  It is one of those songs that I can listen to over and over and over again.  I do like Santana.  Rob Thomas was over exposed but he’s got an interesting voice.  Not great but interesting.

The picture quality of this video isn’t the greatest.  Sorry.

John Hall’s ad

Have You Had Enough is a song that was commissioned by several of the progressive blogs (FireDogLake and Crooks and Liars to name a few).  One of the thoughts behind this particular song was that could be used in campaign ads.  Sure enough, someone has done a great job with it.  John Hall.  He is running for Congress in New York’s 19th District.

Where’s the Outrage? 10/07/06

Repercussions from Congressman Mark Foley’s abrupt resignation from the House of Representatives continued to reverberate around Washington, DC.  Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert has refused to step down.  In spite of the hoopla that has been surrounding the Congressman Mark Foley debacle, the same old problems are still out there festering — Iraq and Afghanistan.  We talk with Brian Katulis from the Center for American Progress, one of our favorite experts, about the ongoing problems in Afghanistan and Iraq.  We also have Van Duncan, candidate for Buncombe County Sheriff in the house.  We discuss duties of the Sheriff and how Mr. Van Duncan will improve the office.  This and more on this week’s podcast.

Next week, we have Stephanie Miller in the house!!

Remember I’m on iTunes and on several other podcasting services.
