Hootie and the Blowfish

Hootie blew up in early 1994.  This was their 3rd album.  This album sold 16 million copies.  For about a 2 year period, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing some Hootie and the Blowfish. Their leader singer Darius Rucker just has a unique sound.   Just like many groups that get overexposed in our society, their albums in the late 90’s were duds in my book.  Anyway, last year they released their 10th album.  This tune is from that album.  It is a neat tune.  Enjoy.

Michael Brecker - rest in peace

michael-brecker Michael Brecker - rest in peace

The famous saxophonist Michael Brecker died this week.  If you don’t know who is was please click on the links here and here.  Micheal Brecker was one of the musicians who could play anything.  He seemed to truly enjoy playing.  All I can say is that I have enjoyed his music for over 25 years.

Senate passes Ethics reform

This is huge.  HUGE!! Will post more later on this and the 100 hours legislation.

From WaPo:

Senate Democrats and Republicans broke a difficult stalemate last night and approved 96 to 2 expansive legislation to curtail the influence of lobbyists, tighten congressional ethics rules and prevent the spouses of senators from lobbying senators and their staffs.

The Senate legislation, hailed by proponents as the most significant ethics reform since Watergate, would ban gifts, meals and travel funded by lobbyists, and would force lawmakers to attach their names to special-interest provisions and pet projects that they slip into bills. Lawmakers would have to pay charter rates on corporate jets, not the far-cheaper first-class rates they pay now.

The House earlier this month approved similar language as part of an internal rules change. But other portions of the Senate-passed measure would carry the weight of law and would have impacts far beyond the Capitol. The House would have to pass comparable legislation for those provisions to take effect.

Iraq’s budget - no signs of unity

longchildap Iraqs budget - no signs of unityFrom LAT:

…The $41-billion budget, a copy of which was obtained by the Los Angeles Times, also includes money to assist the families of those killed and imprisoned under the regime of the late Saddam Hussein. The Shiite Muslim-sponsored provision has proved so offensive to Sunni Arab lawmakers that they have threatened to loudly condemn the entire spending plan unless benefits are also provided to prisoners who were abused by American troops at the Abu Ghraib prison and to those killed in U.S. military operations since the toppling of Hussein’s Sunni-dominated government in 2003.

“If they do not change this particular law, we will not vote for the budget,” said Alaa Saddoun, a Sunni lawmaker in the sect’s main parliamentary bloc. ( more… )

If there is any hope of Iraq staying together as a country, the Sunni’s can’t feel like second class citizens.

Chinese prove they can navigate space

From LAT:

The Chinese military shot down one of its own aging satellites with a ground-based ballistic missile last week, demonstrating a new technological capability at a time of growing Bush administration concern over Beijing’s military modernization and its intentions in space.

The shoot-down, which U.S. officials said occurred on the evening of Jan. 11, prompted a formal protest from Washington that was joined by allies including Canada and Australia, U.S. officials said Thursday. Japan has demanded an explanation, and Britain and South Korea are also expected to file formal objections.

“The United States believes China’s development and testing of such weapons is inconsistent with the spirit of cooperation that both countries aspire to in the civil space area,” said Gordon D. Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council. “We and other countries have expressed our concern to the Chinese.”

A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said today that he could not comment on the anti-satellite test.  ( more… )
