TDS - The President’s pleasure

Yuck! Just thinking about that makes me what to puke. Anyway, the common phrase to remove all responsibility seems to be “I service at the pleasure of the president.” Jon Stewart has a little fun with this phrase.

HB - Schumer calling on Rove to testify

This goes very well with the previous post. New e-mails show that the White House and Alberto Gonzales have thrown up a smoke screen when they said that Harriett Miers was the first to mention that all 93 US Attorneys be fired.

You can read the e-mail for yourself here. Previous emails can be found here.

WaPo has an excellent graph which shows what they said in front of Congress and what they said in emails or simply did.

From MSNBC.com:

White House political adviser Karl Rove raised questions in early 2005 about replacing some federal prosecutors but allowing others to stay, an e-mail exchange released Thursday shows.

“Karl Rove stopped by to ask you (roughly quoting) ‘how we planned to proceed regarding US Attorneys, whether we were going to allow all to stay, request resignations from all and accept only some of them, or selectively replace them, etc.,’” Colin Newman, a staffer in the office of counsel to the president, wrote to a colleague.

The one-page document, which spans e-mails between the White House and the Justice Department in January 2005, also indicates Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was considering a range of options in dismissing U.S. attorneys early in President Bush’s second term. (more…)

Rove defends and distorts

Karl, Karl, Karl. I find it funny that the world’s most political guy in the world is arguing that the Congress is playing politics. (When he says Congress he means Democrats.) Yep, the US attorneys can be hired and fired by the president. Here’s the problem, your administration has lied on a number of occasions about these firings. Alberto Gonzales stated that new appointments would go thru the Senate but that wasn’t true. The administration had no intention of going to the Senate to confirm these appointments. Secondly, the administration said that these US attorneys were not fired for political reasons. These attorneys had problems or issues. Well, their official evaluations revealed no problems. The released e-mails clearly reveal that these attorneys were singled out because of politics. So, the problem isn’t that these guys were replaced. The problem is the constant lying or the truthiness, if you will, to the American public.

Patrick Leahy is looking for Karl.

Taliban plans for Spring offensive

I have been screaming for about 3 years that we didn’t destroy the Taliban.  Well, strangely, it looks like I was right.
