Gas is cheap in Saudi Arabia

Yet, another reason for oil prices to artificially high. I truly don’t believe that anyone has a good handle on gas prices. There aren’t enough refineries in the US some say. Why not? Because, in my humble opinion, there is no downside for oil companies to choke of gas supplies and allow the price to rise. If they make too much gas then gas prices fall. Therefore, no new refineries. By choking off supply at the refinery level the oil companies build a cushion or a supply of crude just in case something happens. Hugo Chavez goes nuts or a Russian pipeline blows.

From CNN.com:

In Saudi Arabia gasoline costs about 45 cents a gallon. In Iran it’s 33 cents. Venezuelans pay less than a quarter.

These absurdly low prices are a direct result of massive government subsidies.

While these numbers are not adjusted for cost of living, it’s fair to say that drivers in those countries are getting a good deal.

But it’s straining government budgets. More importantly, it’s not allowing the free market to do its job. Higher prices on the open market are not leading to a drop in demand, which is keeping the cost of oil high for everyone else.

“Roughly two-thirds of new oil demand is coming from countries that have subsidized oil markets,” said Christopher Ruppel, a senior geopolitical analyst with the consulting firm John S. Herold. “So demand is not going to be affected if oil goes from $60 a barrel to $80.” (more…)

Clapton - Pretending

There are only a few artists that can be mentioned with Eric Clapton. He has had a career that no one could have dreamed off. A career that has spanned 4 decades. Frank Sinatra had a career that spanned 4 decades. Clapton.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine was arguing about the greatest opening chords of rock and roll. He was arguing for the opening riff of Layla. I said that there were several unforgettable opening riffs including The Stones - Start me up, The Who’s Who are you? and the Beatles - It been a Hard Day’s Night. All of these are great. Which is the greatest is a matter of taste. He kept arguing. I moved on.

Pretending is a great tune off of one of Clapton’s best CD’s.

Bill Moyers Journal - Jon Stewart

In 2002 and 2003, Jon Stewart was about the only one on the tube who would say something was critical of the president. He rejected group think. He continued to use his humor to disarm his critics. He used a old technique to shine the light of truth on the Bush administration. He would use juxtaposition. Any first year, film student can tell you how it is used in film. Well, Jon Stewart used it to show that Bush would say one thing then do a 180 and hope that no one would notice. It is my belief that the MSM noticed but didn’t want to say anything. Jon Stewart thought that was hogwash.

Stewart’s interviews with guests are usually somewhat funny but don’t very insightful. He has been criticized by others (Bill Maher) that he never asks tough questions. I’m not sure that folks tune into The Daily Show to watch Jon grill some politician. On the other hand, Jon had a great interview with President Prevez Musharraf a couple of months ago. He had a great interview with Tony Zinni. As far as I know, Jon’s interview with John McCain was the most confrontational that he has ever had. That is not his style.

Anyway, Bill Moyers has a non-confrontational admiring interview with Jon Stewart.
