Of all of the people that I thought would be leaving the Bush administration I’m kinda of surprised by Dan Bartlett. Alison Stewart interviews James Moore author of Bush’s Brain. James has followed George since he was the governor of Texas. He is particularly critical of our president. I think he is critical because Mr. Moore knows that King George has slipped out of every tough scrap that he has been in with the help of his daddy and his handlers like Bartlett.

From CNN.com:
Dan Bartlett, one of President Bush’s most trusted advisers and his longest-serving aide, said Friday he is resigning to begin a career outside of government.
The move was announced on Bartlett’s 36th birthday. He has been with Bush for nearly 14 years, from Bush’s first campaign as governor of Texas, through two races for the White House and more than six years of a presidency marked by costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and an ongoing battle against terrorism.
As counselor to the president, Bartlett has been at the center of White House decision-making, stepping into the public eye in times of trouble to defend Bush on everything from the unpopular war in Iraq to the government’s bungled response to Hurricane Katrina and the Republicans’ loss of Congress. I’m sorry is there a difference between these 2 men?
This morning on the Bill Press Show, Paul Begala was talking about Fred Thompson getting into the race. He had several good points. The R’s are not happy with their front runners. Fred Thompson may be the right man to come to the rescue. Republicans, in spite of bashing Hollywood, truly love Hollywood. Reagan and Aurnold (mis-spelling intended) are 2 examples of how the Right embraces Hollywood. Heck, for that matter, George Bush is playing the role of a simple man from Texas who loves to clear brush. Never mind the reality that he grew up in New England and went to some of the best schools in the country. Unfortunately, for the Republicans, Fred Thompson was not a very distinguished Senator. He spent something like 18 years as a lobbyist in Washington which should automatically disqualify anyone. He represented both liberal and conservative causes which means that he was in it for the money and not ideology. As a matter of fact Fred Thompson helped raise money for Scooter defense fund. He was out there asking that Scooter be freed. No jail time.
I’m not sure if Fred Thompson is good or bad in the Republican world. The bottom-line is that the Democrats have a strong field. The Republicans do not.
Oh, it is good to see Alison Stewart back filling in for Keith Olbermann.
I think that the fallout from September 11th is not even close to being over. There was so much dust and so many people in the middle of it. That can not be good for your lungs. It just can’t be.

From NYT:
New York City’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Charles S. Hirsch, has for the first time directly linked a death to exposure to dust from the destruction of the World Trade Center.
In a letter made public yesterday, Dr. Hirsch said that he was certain ”beyond a reasonable doubt” that dust from the twin towers contributed to the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones, 42, a civil rights lawyer who was engulfed on Sept. 11 as she ran from her office a block away from the trade center.
She later developed a serious cough and had trouble breathing, and she died five months after the terrorist attack. [Read more →]
New Jersey Governor John Corzine is out of the hospital and that long road of recovery (I have a few posts on his ordeal here and here). Many trauma victims walk out of the trauma center, the place that saved their lives, and never look back. This is the problem with trauma. We, I’m a trauma surgeon for those who don’t know, don’t have a few celebs to help raise money and awareness for our cause. Everyone knows someone who has been in a bad car crash, fallen off a roof or been a victim of violence. We should have advocates out the wahzoo. It is nice to see him do this PSA.
The Houston Chronicle reports today that bacteria levels were down yesterday on beaches in Galveston, Texas. The heavy rain over the weekend had washed untreated animal waste, septic tank waste and human waste from the antiquated Galveston sewage system into Galveston Bay.
This fecal matter is a strong reminder of my childhood.
Growing up in Rhode Island, I recall that when it rained untreated sewage would often be poured into Narragansett Bay. This would lead to a temporary ban of shell fishing and to an early hesitancy on my part about eating raw oysters. [Read more →]
