Tony Bennett

I’m going out of town. I’m taking my 3 year old grandson back to his momma.

I’ll leave you with a great tune and an odd combination. I would have never figured Elvis Costello and Tony Bennett. The combo works beautifully.

Thanks for the videoclip, E, I hadn’t seen that one.

The pairing doesn’t surprise me at all, given the turns Elvis has taken in his recent albums. He’s been all over the spectrum musically throughout his career, but two of my favorite Elvis albums are a couple that he has done (relatively) recently.

The Grammy-winning 1998 album, “Painted from Memory”, was a collaboration with Burt Bacharach and has some amazing songwriting. There is a companion album, made by jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, called “The Sweetest Punch”, that I also highly recommend. It is a collection of jazz arrangements of the songs on “Painted from Memory”, and features vocals by Elvis on a few songs and by jazz singer Cassandra Wilson on a few others.

His other recent album that I really enjoy came out in 2006 and is called “The River in Reverse”. It was nominated for a Grammy, and is a collaboration with New Orleans musician Alan Toussaint.

Don’t forget that he wrote and song on Diana Krall’s last album. He has shown a rare diversity.

    This for the excellent summary.

I love this clip. Both singers clearly love the song and their craft.

Elvis and Diana were married in 2003 and have twins. What do you think the odds are that they end up having some decent musical aptitudes?
