Nickleback - Rock Star

A great friend of mine told me about Nickleback several years ago.  I listened with the jaded ears of someone who has heard tons of bands.  I have seen literally thousands of bands flame out for a variety of reasons.  They had a very unique sound but one album does not get me to stand up and recognize.

Well, Nickleback has proven that they are for real.   This is a fun tune with a hiliarous video.  How many celebs do you recognize?

My friend Bill Scher at LiberalOasis has it.  I’m still bummed that I missed it.  Then again, you can’t be everywhere.  ;-)

Lute - Draft worth considering

lute Lute - Draft worth consideringOh, no he didn’t. What’s wrong with this guy? You don’t use common sense. Not in this administration. I’m sure that Karl Rove with his new iPhone will beat General Lute into submission.

From AP:

Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush’s new war adviser said Friday.

“I think it makes sense to certainly consider it,” Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

“And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation’s security by one means or another,” Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.  (more…)

Trapped Miners

Here’s my problem with all of these trapped miner stories.  We are expending hundreds of thousands of dollars on these miners per day.  Where was the foresight?  Where was the safe room where the miners could retreat to in case of a problem?  A safe room that has emergency oxygen for several days to a week.  A safe room that has food and water.  A safe room that could be easily drilled to because you know the coordinates.  I’m just askin’ where’s the forethought?  Where’s the thought that we care about human life so much that we are willing to spend the money upfront instead of this Superman mentality when you swoop in at the last minute and try to save the day.  Superman is a great cartoon but it is a lousy plan to keep people from dying.

Musharraf’s sticky mess

President General or is it General President Pervez Musharraf is in a little bit of trouble. The US policy in the region is also in trouble. In 2001, after 9/11 we decided to embrace Musharraf because he was “willing” to help us in the war on terror. The current mess illustrates our talking about democracy on one hand and cozying up to a dictator on the other.

This video has a rare American interview with former Prime Minister Benazair Bhutto. Masharraf is rumored to be talking with Bhutto about some power sharing deal to qwell the unrest in his country. Bhutto is currently saying the right things that Washington wants to hear. Also, there was a rumor about Masharraf declaring Marshall law. That seems to have disappeared.

From NYT:

Pakistan’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, was on the brink of declaring a state of emergency in his increasingly volatile country but backed away after a gathering storm of media, political and diplomatic pressure, Pakistani officials acknowledged on Thursday.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned General Musharraf about 2 a.m. Thursday in Pakistan, the State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, said. Bush administration officials refused to discuss in public what was said, but one Pakistani official said that Ms. Rice exhorted General Musharraf not to declare emergency rule. The conversation lasted about 15 minutes.

“She thought it was an opportune moment to talk about a couple of things,” Mr. McCormack said without elaborating. (more…)
