Reporters Without Borders

Reporters Without Borders makes available on its website for downloading and printing the Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents.

This book is meant mostly for people in countries where no free press exists.

Reporters Without Borders is an advocacy group that works on behalf of traditional journalists and also in support of new-media internet freedom around the world.

The handbook discusses ways to get around official censorship, ways to remain anonymous and tips for running a good and successful blog.

ROB states that in countries without a free press that bloggers may essentially serve the function of a press.

I think this handbook also has value in the United States. Both freedom of the press and the independence of bloggers are under assault from many sides.

Cowboys replay last week’s game to beat Rams

For the first four games of the this young season the Cowboys have started rather slow and heated up as the game went on. Last week the Cowboys were tied with the Bears 3 - 3 at half time. This week the Cowboys were 14 - 7 against the Rams. The Rams didn’t look great but they were stopping the run. The Cowboys had several 3 and out’s. Unlike last week the Cowboys get a spark just before half-time. Romo gets the ball hiked…thrown over his head while he was in the shotgun. All I could see was Bob Griese in the SuperBowl going back and back as Romo runs about 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage to get the ball. Nothing good can come from this play. Wrong, Romo then turns up field dodges one defender and gets a first down. He keeps the drive alive to score the go ahead touchdown just before half.

The Cowboys like they did last week came out and dominated. They scored touchdowns on their next 3 possessions. Game Over. It was amazing to watch. I’m not sure if Terrell Owens touched the ball during the second half. Jason Whitten and Patrick Crayton (who had him on your fantasy team) carried the load. Romo played great after starting slowly. He did have one turnover but balanced that with 3 passing touchdowns and one running touchdown. The Cowboys racked up over 500 yards in total offense. Interestingly, the Cowboys who led the league in penalties coming into this week had only 2.

I need to give a special shout out to the offensive line and Greg Ellis. Greg who blew out his Achilles last year had 1.5 sacks in limited playing time. Issac Bruce gets a high five for guaranteeing a victory then only having one catch for 24 yards.

All fans are looking at the calendar. Week 6 - Cowboys - Patriots in Texas Stadium.

The NFL

edgerrin-james-vs-steelers The NFL

So, I’m looking at the Red Zone channel and I’m watching some amazing football. Vincent Jackson for the Chargers drops a wide open touchdown. Somebody besides LT and Antonio Gates has to step up.  The Charger defense was in a word awful.  The Arizona Cardinals have just bounded the Steelers for the last 5 minutes with the score 14 - 7. They played Steelers football. The Edge puts the game just about out of reach with a touchdown run. The Arizona Cardinals playing smash mouth football. Who would have thought? The Steelers are in trouble.  Whenever the Cardinals will out muscle you and your a muscle team, you are in trouble.  The Colts have been unstoppable in the second half. Finally Phillip Rivers can’t make a play. He misses a wide open Parker in the back of the end zone. He doesn’t throw a swing pass to LT in the flat. Phillip Rivers must play better.

Oh, look who cashed in as the housing market crashed

I should have known. The CEO of Countrywide has made a bundle. There is something extra nauseating about this. I’m not saying that he did anything legally wrong. I’m saying that he bet against his own industry.

————

From LAT:

As the mortgage industry swooned in late 2006 and 2007, Countrywide Financial Corp. Chief Executive Angelo Mozilo cashed in stock options valued at $138 million — vastly expanding his wealth even as his shareholders watched their stock shrink in value.

Company executives say Mozilo did nothing wrong and that the transactions were made under trading plans that specified how many shares would be sold each month. (more…)

Newt’s out

I’m kind of surprised but, then again, Newt has been sniffing around the Presidential race for over 6 months. I don’t think that he ever got any significant ground swell of Republican support.

—–

From WaPo:

Former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich on Saturday decided against running for president in 2008, less than a day after the Republican indicated publicly that he would spend the next month exploring the viability of a White House bid.

Gingrich said the last-minute change of heart, which came as aides readied the NewtNow.org Web site and prepared to file campaign papers, was the result of legal advice that running for president would require stepping down as chairman of his nonprofit organization, American Solutions.  (more…)

Billy Ocean - Going gets tough

Fun song.  Billy Ocean had 2 or 3 albums that had several hits then he fell off the charts.

This was the “theme” song from Jewel of the Nile.  Kathleen Turner (one of my favorite actresses), Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas lip sync the backup vocals which makes for a fun video.

Cowboys-Rams preview

So, how does this game stack up?  The Cowboys have the #2 offensive in the league.  Wow, it has been a long time since that has happened.  The St. Louis Rams have given up an average of 22.7 points/game (21st in the league) but the Rams rank 7th in total defense with the Dallas Cowboys defense still stinging over the Giants win, is ranked 21st in total defense.  Steven Jackson is out for the Rams.  Mark Bulger has just 2 TDs and 3 ints so far this year.   He was only 17/26 and 116 yards last week.  All 3 of his interceptions were last week.

Look for the Rams to try to get on top early.  I think that they will try to control the clock and keep the ball away from Dallas’ offensive.  They will pick on corner back  Jacques Reeves with Tory Holt.  If Dallas has to play from behind, St. Louis has a strong secondary, look for the Cowboys to be in trouble.

The way that I see it:  Dallas will control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.  They will mix the run with short passes.  They will try to work the clock and the Rams defense.  If they are able to run the ball, then St. Louis is in for a long day.  Tony Romo must take care of the ball.  No turnovers.

Duke President apologizes

Now, I didn’t see this one coming.  Where’s Nancy Grace?  She was on the story like white on rice (racial pun intended).  In what has been a dramatic turn of events, not only does everyone get exonerated but the prosecutor gets disbarred and jailed.  Now, the Duke President, who canceled the rest of the lacrosse season, apologizes to the players personally.  An outstandingly big gesture from a very proud school.

————

From CNN.com:

Duke University President Richard Brodhead apologized Saturday for not better supporting the men’s lacrosse players falsely accused in last year’s highly publicized rape scandal.

Brodhead, speaking at the university’s law school, said he regretted Duke’s “failure to reach out” in a “time of extraordinary peril” after a woman accused three players of rape at a March 2006 party thrown by the team.

“Given the complexities of this case, getting the communication right would never have been easy,” Brodhead said. “But the fact is that we did not get it right, causing the families to feel abandoned when they were most in need of support. This was a mistake. I take responsibility for it and I apologize for it.”  (more…)

Countdown - President Clinton

Keith Olbermann asked the 42nd President, Bill Clinton, if we are missing the larger issues because we focus on an ad and a commentator who makes racist comments.  It is so good to hear a President that is articulate and can discuss almost anything.

Beef - It what’s being recalled

beef Beef - It whats being recalled

Maybe it is just me but there seems to be a ton of recalls going on. Toys. There have been a bunch of toys that have been recalled. Wasn’t there something with food a couple of months ago? Yep, that had to do with lettuce if I’m not mistaken. Now, beef. 21 million pounds of it.

——–

From CNN.com:

Topps Meat Co. on Saturday expanded a recall of ground beef from about 300,000 pounds to 21.7 million pounds, one of the largest meat recalls in U.S. history.

In a statement, the Elizabeth, New Jersey, company said the hamburger patties may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and cramps, as well as other complications.

A statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said 25 illnesses are under investigation in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  (more…)

Daughtry - Over You

Oh, I’m sure that everyone over the age of 20 has someone who dumped them.  We all wish that we could have written a song like this and really mean it.  Daughtry continues to impress me with his voice.

The Errington Thompson Show 8-25-07

Freeway blogging, an interview with PJ Crowley from the Center for American Progress on their 3rd Terrorism Index survey, Max Roach dies, Civil Liberties and more.  A caller wants to talk about Saudi Arabia and why we aren’t focused on them.  I answer that question.  I review some of the great quotes from the Bush Administration when they were speaking at the VFW.  Great show, enjoy.

The benefits of Dan Rather’s Lawsuit

Dan RatherIf we put aside the $70 million price tag for a second and look at this suit, I think that we will find a gold nugget at the end of the rainbow. Remember that Dan Rather was fired or put out to pasture because of a story on 60 Minutes II that Rather did on Bush’s National Guard Service. The old question on whether or not George Bush completed his Texas Air National Guard service has never been completely answered. Rather produced documents that seemed to show that Bush wasn’t performing well. Immediately, I mean, during the broadcast, there was an instant cry of foul. Soon, the documents authenticity was questioned. CBS originally backed the story then started to waffle then caved. Dan Rather was taken off the Evening News and placed on 60 minutes II. He really wasn’t used much and he quit. This brings us to the present.

Questions remain because some documents about Bush’s past seem to have been misplaced. Many believe that Alberto Gonzales had something to do with those documents disappearing but this is just speculation. So, what happened and why do we care? I don’t think that most Americans do care. It is water under the bridge. On the other hand, clear answers may help round out a picture of George Bush that many liberals have of him. He is not and never was a good ole boy. He went to Andover (one of the most elite prep schools in the country), Yale and Harvard. Good Ole boys don’t usually go to those places. What the Dan Rather lawsuit may do is bring out many details of President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard. If it does that then it will be worth more than $70 million to many liberals.

As an added benefit we may be able to view how the Bush administration and the network executives worked hand and hand to control stories in the post 9-11 world. If it does that, I’ll bring the popcorn to enjoy the show.

Immigrant wants to go home with his money

Pedro Zapeta has been exactly what the Republicans want. An immigrant that helps the American economy and goes back to his own country. Well, over 11 years, Pedro saved $59,000. So, he was going to take his money back to Guatemala and buy some land for him and his family. Unfortunately, as with all stories like this that come to light there was a problem. Customs seized his money. Now, they want to deport him and keep his money. Yep, that’s justice. NOT! Where’s 60 minutes when you need ‘em?

———

From CNN.com:

For 11 years, Pedro Zapeta, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, lived his version of the American dream in Stuart, Florida: washing dishes and living frugally to bring money back to his home country.

Two years ago, Zapeta was ready to return to Guatemala, so he carried a duffel bag filled with $59,000 — all the cash he had scrimped and saved over the years — to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. (more…)

Dennis Kucinich on the War

Representative Dennis Kucinich is known more for his beautiful wife than his policies.  He isn’t getting much play in the press.  He has lots of problems to overcome in order to get into the “top” tier.  He hasn’t really raised any money (less than a million by last count).  Therefore he can’t buy ads and can’t get his message out.  One appearance on the Ed Schultz show ain’t going to help him much.  In spite of all this, last night, I thought his answer to Iraq was the most correct.

Barry Bonds/Babe Ruth

ChiUnionGiants_1905 Barry Bonds/Babe Ruth

The man who owns the Barry Bonds 756th home run ball is stamping an asterisk on the ball and donating it to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame is going to accept the ball.

I don’t know that I’ve heard before of a museum accepting exhibits that have been intentionally defaced.

The defaced ball is meant to suggest that Barry Bonds set the home run record with the aid of steroids. I don’t know if this is true or not.

I do know that every record in baseball set before 1947 was set when no blacks were allowed to play. Should an asterisk be painted on exhibits connected to the careers of Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Babe Ruth?

An argument might be that Mr. Bonds chose to use any steroids he may have taken, while pre-Jackie Robinson players were in a world not of their making.

But didn’t any of those old-time players have an obligation to speak up for fair-play?

I’m not certain the double standard is fully racial—Mark McGwire is not very popular these days.

Still, some kind of double standard appears to be at work.

Cheney got it right in 1992

I know what the neocons are going to say to this because they say it to every thoughtful question.  9/11 changed everything.  Horse Hockey.  Cheney and the Project for a New American Century were talking about over throwing Saddam BEFORE Bill Clinton left office.  9/11 gave the neocons an excuse but it changed nothing in their minds.

Don’t forget this video which surfaced a couple of months ago.

Jesus Christ prevented violence in Jena

There is that saying - open mouth, insert foot and chew vigorously. Now, meet Jena district attorney Reed Walters. Mr. Walters read a prepared text which included references to God. Now, I’m normally nauseated when most people reference God because it is almost always a way to deflect blame or to inject emotion and sympathy. Mr. Walters knows full well that many Americans believe that racism infects the DA’s office if not many of the citizens of Jena. So, with the spotlight of America shining upon him, he says, “I firmly believe and am confident of the fact that had it not been for the direct intervention of the Lord Jesus Christ last Thursday, a disaster would have happened. You can quote me on that.”

So, Black people can not gather peacefully without God making them behave? Are you serious? What an insult. What a racist insult. Maybe he and Bill O’Reilly hang out in the same places. I’m just stunned because you know that he wrote that down. He probably read it over with his friends to make sure that he got everything just right then he nervously read it before the cameras.

This man who is suppose to apply the law fairly is clearly biased. He should be asked to resign immediately for his racist comments. He should disbarred for his actions in the Jena 6 case. He should face civil changes for violating the civil rights of not just the Jena 6 but of the people of color in Jena. He has made that city the face of racism in America today.

NPR had a very long segment on Jena last week. I thought it was informative especially when they interviewed a preacher, Reverend Eddie Thompson (no relation). The interviewer, Melissa Block and Rev. Thompson were very thoughtful. One portion of the interview was very insightful. It was a clue of what live is really like in Jena. Reverend Thompson said something like we can already see the healing. Minister, Black and White got together and prayed for our community, so I think there is hope. Now, this is close but not a direct quote. He thought that Black and White pastors getting together for prayer was a sign of healing. If that is a sign of healing there shows me everything that I need to know. That’s all they did was pray? Christian pastors got together to pray. This should go on every month!! The fact that it doesn’t is telling. In most cities in America today there is some sort of interfaith counsel. Jena doesn’t have one. This fosters the divide. If Christians and people of faith can’t come together in Jena without a crisis they are seriously in trouble.

BTW - you should read this blog post here. Very informative.

From AP:

A black teenager whose prosecution in the beating of a white classmate prompted a massive civil rights protest here walked out of a courthouse Thursday after a judge ordered him freed.

Mychal Bell’s release on $45,000 bail came hours after a prosecutor confirmed he will no longer seek an adult trial for the 17-year-old. Bell, one of the teenagers known as the “Jena 6,” still faces trial as a juvenile in the December beating in this small central Louisiana town.

“We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week’s protest. (more…)

Jena 6 - Mychal Bell might be out soon

It appears that Mychal Bell may be out of jail soon. The DA has decided not to appeal a judges decision that Mychal should have been tried as a juvenile.

Also, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco meet with Martin Luther King, III, Al Sharpton and others yesterday.

——-

From WaPo:

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, with Martin Luther King III and the Rev. Al Sharpton at her side, announced Wednesday that she had spoken with Walters and asked him to reconsider pushing to keep the case in the adult system. She said Walters told her he had decided not to appeal the ruling.

<snip>

Bell, who remains behind bars, was one of six black Jena High School teens arrested after a December attack on a white student, Justin Barker. Five of the six initially were charged with attempted second-degree murder, though charges against four of them, including Bell, were later reduced. One teen has yet to be arraigned, another was handled as a juvenile and records are sealed. (more…)
