Tony Snow is on the last train out

No matter what I think of his politics, my heart goes out to Tony Snow and his family. He has been diagnosed with recurrent colon cancer if I’m not mistaken. This is as serious as Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer if not more so. There are a variety treatments that are effective in certain types of breast cancer. For Stage IV colon cancer no treatment is that effective. 5 year survival rates are low. Very low. Tony Snow needs to leave the White House to make some money for his young children. I wish him all the best.

BTW, I know that Senator Craig has resigned. I thought about posting something on him separately but he speech was trite. His idea to “fight on” was silly. He plead guilty. Now, after the outcry, he was wronged? I’m afraid that the poor cop that arrested him is going to be stream rolled by a still powerful, self loathing, Republican with an axe to grind.

Wildfires here and there

Just remember that there is no global warming. There is no global warming. There is no global warming. Now, that better. As your underwear spontaneously ignites, are you believing now?

From YahooNews:

An enormous wildfire threatening the Sun Valley ski resort was nearly half contained Wednesday, but authorities said they didn’t know when thousands of evacuees could return to the area.

Fire managers said the wind from thunderstorms expected to hit the area later this week could increase fire activity, so fire crews were working long hours building and reinforcing fire lines.

“It took all night, from sundown to sunset,” David Olson, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman, said of the burnout work. “This is a very key holding point.” (more…)

From YahooNews:

Thousands of Greeks besieged banks on Thursday, clamoring for state compensation for damage caused by the country’s worst wildfires which burned on in some areas one week into the crisis.

Anyone can get an instant 3,000 euros ($4,000) from banks in affected areas by showing identification and signing a form — a simple procedure which the government says shows it reacting quickly to the fires that have killed 63 people. (more…)

Appalachian State

I have seen a ton of football but going into Michigan. 110,000 crazy fans. There is no way that a small school like Appalachian State has a chance. To quote Berman - And that is why they play the GAME!!

——

From ESPN.com:

Chances are, most of the 110,000 fans at the Big House had no idea exactly where Appalachian State is located.

By the time they saw a blocked field goal in final seconds, this much was certain: The little Mountaineers pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

Appalachian State 34, No. 5 Michigan 32.

The team from Boone, N.C., took the lead with 26 seconds left when Julian Rauch kicked a 24-yard field goal. Corey Lynch blocked a 37-yard try on the final play, and the Mountaineers sealed a jaw-dropping upset that might have no equal. (more…)

Byron Leftwich released

Byron Leftwich had become almost a legend. He had proved that he could take punishment. He had a strong arm, a very strong arm. I thought that he had a problem with locking on to receivers. It is easy to do but in the NFL you can’t do it. Byron’s other problem was that he took too much punishment. He got hurt. Taking all of that into account, it was very surprising to hear that the Jaguars let Byron go after training camp and 4 pre-season games. There was no hint. No warning. Yesterday he was the starter. Today he is looking for a job.

David Garrard proved that he can play in the NFL last year. He is mobile. He has a strong arm. He is mobile. With pass rushers becoming faster and faster, the quarterback must get out of the way some times.

I do feel sorry for Byron.

From ESPN.com:

One of coach Jack Del Rio’s first decisions with the Jacksonville Jaguars was drafting Byron Leftwich.

One of his toughest was letting him go.

Del Rio and the Jaguars said Friday they are parting ways with Leftwich after four frustrating, injury-filled seasons. They hope to trade him but are resigned to releasing the former first-round draft pick.

“To make a decision this bold requires some strong conviction, and I have that,” Del Rio said. (more…)
