Complexity of the violence in Darfur

After Rush Limbaugh said that Liberals were pushing to get us into Darfur because the people of Darfur were Black, I thought that I would try and find a good video to post on the pain and suffering of a large group of people. First of all, Rush is a racist. Secondly, he spoke of Darfur as if it was a country. It is not. It is a region of the Sudan. Thirdly, as the world’s only superpower we have to lead the world. We must be a force for good. Not a force for oil interests. Killing hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, causing the starvation of tens of thousands more is something that a civilized nation shouldn’t stand for. Finally, I don’t know of any Blacks in the US who are going to vote Democratic because of any policies in Africa. But Rush knows this and lies to this caller any way. He is painting a picture for his listeners and damn the facts or the reality.

More on the Jena 6

Anderson Cooper ran a story on the Jena 6. Unfortunately, it was very superficial. Without the detail you really can’t figure out the depth of the injustice. I’m very disappointed in CNN in general and Anderson Cooper in specific.

BTW, where’s is Jessie and Al? Why aren’t they down in Jena, La. calling Anderson Cooper or Brian Williams on the phone?

Democracy Now has a very complete report.

Update:  I do have to give a high 5 to AC 360 for covering a story that is NOT getting main stream media play.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

…The trouble started when black students exercised their right to sit under a shade tree traditionally used by white students. In response, white students hung three “nooses” from the tree. That act — a throwback to the days when blacks were lynched for exercising their civil rights — was portrayed by school officials as a “silly prank,” and the white students got in-school suspensions.

But, while the misconduct by white students was handled as a prank, and an attack against a black student at a private party resulted in one of the attackers being charged with a misdemeanor, school officials and the LaSalle Parish District Attorney have brought out a hammer against the black students involved in the school fight. Gulf Coast recovery

I have mixed emotions about this story.  Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the US.  They need a little of everything.  Katrina completely squashed what a calming the Mississippi Gulf Coast had.  Towns like Gulfport and Biloxi were devastated.  In this NBC report, Biloxi, Mississippi is thriving behind the gambling industry.  Old laws which required casinos to be water-based or placed after the hurricane and are to spur economic growth.

I lived in Shreveport — Bossier City, Louisiana during the late 80s and through the mid-90s.  The first casinos were built in the early 90s.  There was a lot of speculation of increased crime.  Fortunately, this did not happen.  Minimum wage workers nearly doubled their salaries by going to work for the casinos instead of some of the other businesses in town.  This caused a relative labor shortage.  The other businesses had to raise their pay in order to get qualified workers.  The casinos were an economic boom to a relatively depressed city.  The lowest wage earners increased their income and got health benefits.

Conquest

carnival_conquest_cruiseship Conquest

The Carnival Cruise ship Conquest is a smoke-belching, disease- producing monstrosity.

I saw this ship today docked at Galveston, Texas. It was letting off a lot of dirty smoke into the air. Here is a link about cruise ship pollution.

Why is this ship called the Conquest? I don’t know. Much of the native population of the Caribbean was exterminated some time ago. Who is left to conquer? Here is a link to Caribbean slavery. Here is link to smallpox. Here is a link to venereal disease. What the ship should be called is the Tax Avoidance. Tax avoidance is why it is registered in Panama.

On board ship, passengers may contract Norwalk virus. This affliction can also be termed viral gastroenteritis. There have been repeated outbreaks of Norwalk virus on cruise ships because people don’t wash their hands. The passengers make each other sick.

Here is a link about low pay for the crew on cruise ships.

Here are some real facts about Jamaica instead of the little you see when you take a cruise that stops in that nation.

Here is a story about comments Pope John Paul II made pertaining to the exploitive aspects of tourism. Here is another link to the same subject.
