Chemical Ali sentenced to death

I don’t know of a punishment that is appropriate for someone who gassed and killed 100,000 of people (Kurdish people in this case). Is hanging to good for him? I don’t think that we have the means to make someone like this pay for his sins. Drawing and Quartering is too good.

From AP News:

An Iraqi appeals court on Tuesday upheld death sentences imposed against “Chemical Ali” al-Majid and two other Saddam Hussein lieutenants convicted of crimes against humanity for their roles in a massacre of Kurds, a judge said.

Al-Majid, Saddam’s cousin and former defense minister, gained the nickname “Chemical Ali” after poison gas attacks on Kurdish towns in the 1980s.

The Iraqi High Tribunal upheld his death sentence in a majority decision, as well as those of former Defense Minister Sultan Hashim Ahmad al-Tai and Hussein Rashid Mohammed, former deputy director of operations for the Iraqi Armed Forces, according to appellate court judge Munir Hadad. (more…)

Republican fallout after Craig

Did you notice that Craig didn’t say that he was going to resign, instead, he said it was his intent to resign?  Sloppy language?  Hidden agenda?  One of the things that bothers me with the party of “moral values” is the continual double standard.  Craig has to resign.  Vitter, whose phone number was in the DC Madam’s Rolodex, did some backdoor creeping and he gets nothing.

Skinny Gene found

Sorry, as far as I know you can’t transplant or inject a skin gene into a fat person.

——-

From my Alma mater, UT Southwestern:

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found that a single gene might control whether or not individuals tend to pile on fat, a discovery that may point to new ways to fight obesity and diabetes.

“From worms to mammals, this gene controls fat formation,” said Dr. Jonathan Graff, associate professor of developmental biology and internal medicine at UT Southwestern and senior author of a study appearing in the Sept. 5 issue of Cell Metabolism. “It could explain why so many people struggle to lose weight and suggests an entirely new direction for developing medical treatments that address the current epidemic of diabetes and obesity. Some charges reduced against Jena 6

Jena 6

The momentum is building in favor of the Jena 6. There is a little more MSM coverage and the DA is starting to have to answer some tough questions. Just like Mike Nifong had to answer for his actions, the Jena DA will have to answer for his.

——-

From MSNBC.com:

Prosecutors on Tuesday reduced the attempted murder charges against two more teenagers among the “Jena Six,” a group of black high school students who were arrested following an attack on a white schoolmate.

…On Tuesday, charges against Carwin Jones and Theo Shaw were reduced to aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy. That same reduction was made earlier for Mychal Bell, who was tried and found guilty and could be sentenced to 22½ years at a hearing Sept. 20. (more…)

Bush in Iraq - Nice photo op

Again, the troops are props.  They are there to support Bush’s Return of the Surge.  Bush said shortly after he landed that he came to see the progress in Anbar with his own eyes BUT he never left the base.

I would like to point out that there have been some security gains since the Surge.  I don’t think that anyone would doubt that if we put enough American troops anywhere in the world that they could impose order.  The point of the Surge according to our President was to make a “peaceful” environment where the Iraqi government could make the necessary political progress.   Where is that political progress?
