Obama outlines a new direction in Iraq

The direction is out! The time is NOW!

Update: NYT has the story here. Video added!  The full text of Obama’s speech is here.

From BarackObama.com:

Let me be clear: There is no military solution in Iraq and there never was,” Obama was expected to say in a speech Wednesday at Ashford University.

“The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq’s leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year _ now,” the Illinois senator was to say.

“The president would have us believe there are two choices: keep all of our troops in Iraq or abandon these Iraqis,” Obama said. “I reject this choice.”

Instead, he argued for creating an international working group of countries in the region and in Asia and Europe that would work to stabilize Iraq. (more…)

TDS - Larry Craig

Sadly, The Daily Show has been on break for the last 2 weeks. They completely missed the Larry Craig scandal but because of the craziness that has infected Larry Craig’s brain, the scandal continues. So, Rob Cordory comes back (after a year long absence) and has been staking out the Men’s restroom at the Minneapolis airport for a year. Then we get an explanation of the whole ordeal complete with a soulful backup singer. It has to be seen to be believed.

Vote Vets new ad

General David Petraeus took capital hill by storm…well, he took the House.   He had considerable trouble with the Senate.  The most memorable moment was when he was asked if he believes if we are safer because of our efforts in Iraq.  A brief moment of candor.  He didn’t know.

Countdown - Lieberman the world’s worst

Senator “I’m a Dem but vote like a Rep” Joe Lieberman was talking about how the Senate needs to be nicer and less partisan. He then went to a 9-11 memorial hosted by Sean Hannity with Ann “I can’t spew twice as much vile as you” Coulter front and center.  My way or the highway Joe Lieberman is the worst person in the world.

Mike McConnell, Director of National Intelligence, is 3rd for saying that the arrests in Germany were the result of the FISA laws. A source in the CIA said nope. They were on to that plot well before Congress screwed up the FISA laws, again. Runner up - Brit Hume for giving General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker an open mic. There were really no constructive questioning by Brit. What was the purpose of him being there?

Humberto

Hurricane_structure_graphic Humberto

I’m going to the Houston Astros game tonight regardless of any tropical storm making landfall this evening 50 miles to the south in Galveston.

Tropical Storm Humberto is on the way. It’s going to bring a lot of rain and some gusts of wind.

The big rain is supposed to begin at 10 PM. The game starts at 7:05 CDT. I live about 15 minutes from the stadium.

Click here to see our National Weather Service map that is colorful at the moment with storm warnings.

MoveOn causes a fuss

In the Monday, New York Times, there was a full page ad by MoveOn.org.  I’m not sure what the big deal was except that Republicans wanted to take the focus off of Petraeus and his report.  MoveOn has been a favorite whipping organization of the Right so, why not.

Here’s the ad.  I posted something on this earlier.  TCR has some thoughts here.

What to wear on SW Airlines?

Hot Pants

I thought about posting this story several days ago but I didn’t. This woman was asked by a Southwest Airlines host to cover herself because, I guess, she had too much showing. Now, remember that Southwest Airlines used to advertise the fact that their hostess wore hot pants (see above). They have no policy on customer clothing so how can a host tell her what she was wearing wasn’t appropriate? It would be different if the passenger didn’t just walk thru an airport. She didn’t get arrested for public indecency. So, why did Southwest make a big deal about her clothing?

More here.

Update:  Another woman has come forward claiming that Southwest had a problem with her outfit also.

Countdown - Summary of Petraeus

Everything was going according to schedule then a huge speed bump - the Senate. Tough questions were expected from Democrats but it appears that many Republicans were asking for Petraeus to stay on the hot seat a little longer. There were several good points made by many Senators like is Al Qaeda in Iraq more important that Al Qaeda in Pakistan? Weren’t the troop withdrawals already scheduled?

Then you had John McCain who seemed like he was reading a White House press release. Petraeus loved those questions.

The most important bit of information came for John Warner (Virginia -R). The discussion follows:

SEN. JOHN WARNER, ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE: Are you able to say at this time if we continue what you have laid before the Congress here as a strategy, do you feel that that is making America safer?

PET: Sir, I believe that this is, indeed, the best course of action to achieve our objectives in Iraq.

WARNER: Does that make America safer?

PET: Sir, I don‘t know, actually. I have not sat down and sorted out in my own mind. What I have focused on and been riveted on is how to accomplish the mission of the multinational force, Iraq.

I think when you have changing rationals for the war you can have changing goals. The goal of this administration was to stay in Iraq, no matter what. Dems are going to have to figure out a way to begin bringing the troops home. If they are unable, we need to look for a 3rd party next November.
