Enya

You know that my wife works hard to keep me out of a rut.  Well, the same is with my blog.  She has commented on my music selection.  Well, Enya is definitely different.

One of the Jena 6 is freed

Jena Tree - WP photo

The conviction of Mychal Bell has been thrown out of 3rd District Court of Appeals. The judge stated that some of the charges should been brought in juvenile court. The second degree battery charge has been let stand.

It appears that Jessie and Al were not asleep at the wheel. They have planned a March in Jena for September 20th.

Update: A little history for those who aren’t familiar with this story. more here and here.

And a day late to the party is the Mainstream Media. Mychal Bell has been in Jail since December. Democracy Now had an excellent story on this back in July. In August the WashingtonPost had a story on A03. The NY Times didn’t think the story was needed covering, I guess. The first reference that I could find was today.

Update II: Video Added.

Exile

What type of exile should we choose? What types of exile are chosen for us?

In Colonial America, Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson chose banishment from Massachusetts rather than renounce their views on how best to communicate with God. They went to the wilderness of Rhode Island.

When I was young, I hung out often at a punk rock club called The Jockey Club in Newport, Kentucky. This was a kind of “soft exile.” I wanted to be with people more like myself if just for a few hours.

In the 19th Century, the black American actor Ira Aldridge went to Europe because he could not find roles in the United States.

In Ancient Rome, exile from Rome was a punishment one could receive.

To what extent does each of us withdraw just to get through the day?

Can exile serve as a creative force beyond simply serving as a device for sanity?

I’d say yes.

Artists often have what are termed as “retreats.”

Martin Luther King wrote his Letter From A Birmingham Jail while in a type of forced exile.

I don’t think I could fully trust anyone who, for whatever reasons, does not seek some level of exile from this world.

Ideally, exile serves ultimately as a path to finding a way to be more strongly engaged with the world.

Mark Foley probably will not be charged

Mark Foley

You know every now and then you find a story that gets under your skin.  It makes you mad.  You want to do something but there is nothing more to do than post.  The whole Mark Foley story is one of those kind of stories.  Now, it looks as if charges will not be filed.

——

From RS:

“Barring any extraordinary circumstances, it is very unlikely for charges to be filed in a case once the statute of limitations has run its course,” Aya Gruber, a former federal public defender and professor of law at Florida International University, told ABC News.

“Federal officials turned the case over to Florida after concluding that Foley did not engage in any actual sexual contact until the former pages had turned 18, and had therefore not violated federal law. Washington, D.C. law defines the age of consent as 16,” ABC added.  (more…)

Patriots smacked with $750,000 fine

If you cheat and get caught there is a price to pay in the NFL. I like that.

——

From USA Today.com:

The New England coach was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for stealing an opponent’s defensive signals.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year’s first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn’t. (more…)
