Duke President apologizes

Now, I didn’t see this one coming.  Where’s Nancy Grace?  She was on the story like white on rice (racial pun intended).  In what has been a dramatic turn of events, not only does everyone get exonerated but the prosecutor gets disbarred and jailed.  Now, the Duke President, who canceled the rest of the lacrosse season, apologizes to the players personally.  An outstandingly big gesture from a very proud school.

From CNN.com:

Duke University President Richard Brodhead apologized Saturday for not better supporting the men’s lacrosse players falsely accused in last year’s highly publicized rape scandal.

Brodhead, speaking at the university’s law school, said he regretted Duke’s “failure to reach out” in a “time of extraordinary peril” after a woman accused three players of rape at a March 2006 party thrown by the team.

“Given the complexities of this case, getting the communication right would never have been easy,” Brodhead said. “But the fact is that we did not get it right, causing the families to feel abandoned when they were most in need of support. This was a mistake. I take responsibility for it and I apologize for it.”  (more…)

  1. Now where are all those enlightened Duke professors et al, who so quickly - too quickly in fact - jumped on the “go get ‘em wagon?” If memory serves some of these same cautioned patient restraint for other cases more in line with their agenda, but here they just couldn’t seem to help themselves. So where is a response now from any of them, who were only so eager to offer their self rightous opinions that seem to betray a deep secret thirst for some sort of payback?

Ah to be so enlightened and yet so incapable of simply saying “sorry, I was wrong.” I let me emotions and predjuduce cloud reason.

    We’re waiting and listening …

  2. I was somewhat puzzled by the apology. The players were indeed innocent of the crime they were accused of, but they were not “innocent.”

If they choose to have a party, drink to excess, and hire women to strip, then they do not deserve apologies from Duke.

On the other hand, seems like we should just let boys be boys.

  3. Beat up a white kid, get 1/4 million dollars.
Beat up a black kid, get ?.
