Buckweed fire started by child

Getty Images

OMG.  This is awful to comprehend.  A child was playing with matches and that started a fire which burned over 38,000 acres.  I have nothing more to say.

———-

From CNN.com:

A juvenile playing with matches started a Southern California wildfire that wound up scorching more than 38,000 acres and destroying 63 structures, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

The Buckweed Fire began about 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) on October 21 in the Agua Dulce community.

Authorities immediately began an investigation, and a day later identified the male juvenile as a suspect, according to a report issued by the sheriff’s department.

Warren Buffett doesn’t pay enough tax

Warren Buffett, the second richest man in the world, has been an outspoken critic of the Bush tax cuts since back in 2001 or 2002. He is one of the few billionaires who are honest enough to admit that they aren’t paying as much in taxes (proportionately) as you or I. This is the problem in America. We have been sold a bill of goods and the goods are terrible.

Let’s start with the Death Tax. This is dumbest argument but the Republicans sold it to the American people. The story goes like this - So poor family farmer would lose his farm if we continued the Estate Tax. The second part of the argument was that folks that make a lot of money should be able to keep their money. If we tax it again, it will be double taxed and that’s not fair. (I’m getting nauseated while I type this. I think that I’ll need some Pepto Bismol.) We get “double taxed” all of the time. When we buy gas with our money that has been taxed, we pay gasoline tax. When we pay sales tax on a shirt, it is double taxed. The purpose of the estate tax was to prevent the formation of entitlement or royal class. The thought was that everyone should have to work for a living. The R’s have turned that idea on it ear and they pushed to repeal the Death Tax. Let’s go back to that poor family farmer. No one has been able to show one incident where a family farmer has lost his farm secondary to the Estate Tax. All of the Republicans arguments were bogus.

Tax cuts have never worked to boost an economy. They have worked to pad the pockets of rich Americans but they have never put money in the pockets of the average Joe and Joan. Here’s what Lee Price from the Economic Policy Institute has said about the tax cuts back in 2005.

“Since 2001 President Bush and congressional leaders have promised that enacting each of a series of tax cuts would strengthen the economy by bringing faster growth, more jobs, and greater investment. With Congress again debating whether to extend past tax cuts and enact new ones, it’s time to review how much the last four years of tax cuts have affected the U.S. economy and budget outlook. Unfortunately for most Americans, the tax cuts since 2001 have not made today’s economy stronger. Over the last five fiscal years, the tax cuts have had a direct cost of $860 billion and (with interest costs) a total effect on the deficit of $929 billion. By creating excessive permanent deficits, they have lowered our future standard of living.”

So, that brings us back to Warren Buffett. Maybe he understands that the average Joe or Joan needs a break. They are the ones that need tax relief. How about a tax but for the everyone who makes between $30,000 - $100,000? How about that? And then to offset this we need to increase taxes on the top 1% of households. This isn’t a call for class warfare as some Republicans have stated. Instead, it is equality.

Update: A.L. has written about a Wall Street Journal op-ed which sang the praises of Bush’s tax cut. A.L. took a different route but came to the same conclusion as I did above, tax cuts do not pay for themselves. They never have and never will.

Democratic Debates - Kucinich makes his point

Now, I’m starting to really pay attention.  Dennis Kucinich has a real good point. Then, he screws it up later by talking about UFO’s.  Take a listen.  What do you think?  Should the president be impeached?  My answer is yes but, what’s yours.   I would suggest thinking of the constitution and not politics.

Medal of Honor winner

The Medal of Honor is the highest medal that the president can give to a soldier. Navy Seal Michael Murphy won the honor. His father and wife received the medal in a White House ceremony.

O’Neal booted all the way to the bank

stanoneal ONeal booted all the way to the bank

I wish that I could screw up and get fired. (here’s the best part) As, I collect my things and clean out my office, I put my “I just go booted package” for $161 million.Yep, that’s the severance package that Merrill Lynch’s CEO Stan O’Neal will get. How could su-prime mortgages ever looked like a great investment. Somebody help me? Outside of a get rich quick scheme, how could loaning money to people who can’t afford the house be a good thing?

———-

From MSNBC:

Merrill Lynch’s departing chief executive, Stan O’Neal, will walk away with $161.5 million in stock, options and retirement benefits, the company said Tuesday.

O’Neal, the second-highest paid Wall Street CEO in 2006, retired from Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. on Tuesday, almost a week after the investment bank reported its largest-ever quarterly loss. The $2.24 billion loss was precipitated by a $7.9 billion third-quarter writedown, as the company revalued assets backed by shaky mortgages. O’Neal’s ouster was expected after the loss. (more…)

Talking While Driving

driving and talking on cell

Recently, I came within inches of hitting a pedestrian because I was talking on the cellphone while driving. I just did not see her. I had to swerve to avoid her and could not have missed her by more than a foot.

It’s that simple. I’m near certain that if I’d not been on the phone, I would have seen her. I could have hurt her or killed her. I might well now be facing charges and a lawsuit. All for nothing.

Like many people, I’ve taken up talking on the phone while driving to save time and to keep in touch with others with time that seemed like downtime. I’ve done this even though I knew it was the wrong course.

I feel a bit dumb even admitting what happened. Yet I know plenty of people who talk and drive. This practice has become, despite the risk of an accident, a fact of modern life.

I’m done with talking on the phone while driving.

Countdown - Dana Perino the world’s worst

Glenn Beck is just a mental light-weight.  It is unclear to me why he is still on the air.  He states that the hottest year on record was 1934.  Here’s the temperature graph for the US.  Glenn Beck because he isn’t a scientist and isn’t that bright has confused the warmest temperature for the US with the warmest for the planet.  For this he only gets runner up, the winner is Press Secretary Dana Perino who stated that there were some benefits to global warming.

Countdown - Dems candidates

Barack Obama and John Edwards take new stabs at Hillary Clinton. I’m not sure what Hillary has accomplished to get the frontrunner status that she is getting. What major legislation has she pushed thru Congress? Did she read the NIE before she voted for the War? I don’t know. I’m still very uncomfortable with Hillary.

Here’s the deal - Who ever can win Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina will have the momentum necessary to win it all.

Tony Romo agrees to new contract

Tony Romo, quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, who was in the last year of his contract, has agreed to a 6 year - $69 million deal.  That should keep him happy for a while.

Supreme Court to look at Exxon case

It has now been 18 years since the Exxon Valdez disaster. Tons of crude polluted the Alaska coast. Exxon was fine $5 billion. They appealed. The fine was lowered to $2 billion. Exxon-Mobil’s net profit last year was $39.5 Billion. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear their case. At stake is can you and I hold companies accountable for the actions of their employees.

———

From RS:

The US Supreme Court said Monday it would examine the legality under maritime law of damages of 2.5 billion dollars awarded against ExxonMobil for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker disaster.

It is the latest twist in a long-running saga which began when the Exxon Valdez crashed into a reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989 spilling 11 million gallons of crude into the waters.

It was the worst oil disaster ever to hit the United States, and afterwards ExxonMobil spent some 2.1 billion dollars cleaning up the polluted coastline and more than 300 million in compensation for fishermen and locals affected by the catastrophe. (more…)

Lowell, Sox hold off Rockies and win Series

There has been so much written about the World Series already, I really don’t have much to add.  The Boston Red Sox were clearly the best team.  They out pitched, out hit, out ran and out coached the Rockies.

Jeff Gannon posts a comment

Would you believe that Jeff Gannon is still around? He has a blog. Well, that’s not surprising. Everybody has a blog but the fact that he believes that he was a real reporter, that’s surprising. Read his canned response to my post. He is peddling the story that the “old media” is bad. He is the answer. Jeff Gannon, man escort, is the answer. Mr. Gannon’s real name is James D. “JD” Guckert. He has a book that is coming out. Why? I’m not sure. Who is going to buy a book from this guy? What is he an expert on? Getting White House press passes?

Genocide Resolutions

amerikanska_folk Genocide Resolutions

With the recent discussion about a Congressional resolution declaring Turkey guilty of the genocide of Armenians between 1915 and 1918, should parliaments and congresses across the world consider similar resolutions against nations responsible for the extermination of Native American populations in the Western Hemisphere?

These nations would be Portugal, Spain, France, England and the United States.

Portugal for the widespread death and servitude brought to the Tupi people of Brazil.

Spain for a trail of genocide extending through the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru, Florida and present day New Mexico and Texas.

France for deaths of natives in Canada and throughout North American New France.

England for the liquidation of native peoples in, among other places, Virgina and New England.

The United States for a long history of wiping out native populations.

I think such debate and resolutions around the world might only be fair.

McConnell earmark is a little stinky

I really don’t like earmarks. They don’t help democracy. They help incumbents stay in office. Mitch McConnell seems to be in a little hot water over one of his earmarks. Now, I guess that you could label earmarks into 3 categories - bad, worse and awful. I think that pushing for a defense contractor is bad. Pushing for an overseas (British) contractor is worse. Trying to get a $25 million project to a company that is under investigation by the Justice Department is awful, isn’t it?

—————–

From the Lexington Herald-Leader:

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is pushing $25 million in earmarked federal funds for a British defense contractor that is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and suspected by American diplomats of a “longstanding, widespread pattern of bribery allegations.”

McConnell tucked money for three weapons projects for BAE Systems into the defense appropriations bill, which the Senate approved Oct. 3. The Defense Department failed to include the money in its own budget request, which required McConnell to intercede, said BAE spokeswoman Susan Lenover. (more…)

Trinity beats Millsaps

I really don’t follow college football.  There are so many teams.  It is hard to keep up with who’s doing what.  I just don’t have the time but I do watch some games and the SportsCenter highlights.

This highlight caught my eye.  Trinity is down by 2 with only a couple of seconds on the clock.  They have about 60 yards to go for a touchdown.  They throw a ten yard pass over the middle then one of the most remarkable plays that I have ever seen begins to unfold.  15 laterals later.  15!!!!!   Several times it looks like Millsaps will tackle the guy who is lateraling and the game would be over.  The ball is handled by Curry 2 or 3 times.  He gets the final lateral in the middle of the field and sprints to the end zone. Millsaps loses.  Trinity wins.  Remarkable play! It is the best play that I have seen this season.

World Series Update

The Colorado Rockies were down 6 to nothing. They get 2 runs in the 6th. Holliday just got 3 runs in the 7th. The Boston Red Sox are only up 6 - 5 in Colorado. Now, this is great baseball.

Update:  The Boston Red Sox are simply playing great team baseball.  Their line up is great.  There doesn’t appear to be any holes.  They are getting solid pitching.   Rookies Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia were 7 for 10.  If they go 7 for 10 it is impossible to beat the Red Sox.

The Red Sox like a Champion responded to the Rockies closing the score to 6 - 5 by getting 3 runs in the 8th.  This was a great game if you are a Sox fan.  If you are a Rockies fan, the game showed that Colorado can hit but the pitching is questionable.

Boston should close this one out in 4 or 5 games.  They are playing with great confidence.  The Rockies are scratching their heads trying to figure out how to get a lead and keep it.

Sometimes Heroes Are Right in Front of Us

A small group of California firefighters was overrun by fire. They deployed protective shelters. They called in what amounts to an airstrike. After almost being burned to death, they went back to work.

Map of fires. There are still fires everywhere. Because so much stuff is burning the air quality is now a huge concern.

Local blog tries to raise funds.

————

From LAT:

Firefighters took advantage of cooler weather, and even some light drizzle, today in the nearly weeklong battle against Southern California’s wildfires, but officials cautioned that blazes near Lake Arrowhead, in eastern Orange County and in San Diego County remained major concerns.

In the rugged mountains of eastern Orange County, officials were counting on the milder weather to enable them to make inroads against the Santiago blaze, an arson fire that continues to threaten hundreds of homes in Silverado Canyon. Overnight, firefighters protected homes in the narrow seven-mile canyon and used bulldozers to build a five-mile fire break, aiming to stop the fire’s march toward the Riverside County line. Countdown - Oops more fake news

No, this is not the Daily Show nor the Colbert Report but instead it is FEMA. The Federal Emergency Management Agency held it’s own press conference. When I mean it’s own, I mean that there were no reporters. All the questions were asked by FEMA employees. MSNBC and Fox carried portions of the “news” conference live. This is better than Jeff Gannon.

Have you seen Michael Chertoff’s reaction? (like he didn’t know) “I think it was one of the dumbest and most inappropriate things I’ve seen since I’ve been in government,” Michael Chertoff said. Remember that this was standard operating procedure at the White House. So, someone didn’t get the memo that the White House was sort of going back to reality.

Update: FEMA official resigns.

————-

From WaPo:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s No. 2 official apologized yesterday for leading a staged news conference Tuesday in which FEMA employees posed as reporters while real reporters listened on a telephone conference line and were barred from asking questions.

“We are reviewing our press procedures and will make the changes necessary to ensure that all of our communications are straight forward and transparent,” Vice Adm. Harvey E. Johnson Jr., FEMA’s deputy administrator, said in a four-paragraph statement

In the briefing, parts of which were televised live by cable news channels, Johnson stood behind a lectern, called on questioners who did not disclose that they were FEMA employees, and gave replies emphasizing that his agency’s response to this week’s California wildfires was far better than its response to Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
