How about Domestic Spying before 9-11?

spying-on-us How about Domestic Spying before 9-11?

This revelation of over the weekend completely blew away the President’s argument that he only wants these powers to keep us safe.  Horse Hockey.  According to a NYT article, the NSA asked for telephone records in February of 2001.   We also know that Verizon has return over records without a court order.  I’m guessing that no one believes in privacy any more.

From TMP:

Joseph Nacchio, the former CEO of Qwest Communications, delivered a pair of twin bombshells last week, when he asserted in a court filing that the National Security Agency had approached Qwest six months before 9/11 about participating in a legally dubious program, and that after the company declined, the administration yanked hundreds of millions in government contracts.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers’ (D-MI) eyebrows are firmly in the raised position. So today he wrote Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and senior Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein, who both testified before his committee last month, to inquire: “I ask that you provide the Committee with an immediate briefing on the facts behind these recent revelations, and that you then provide us with any documents concerning the nature and scope of these pre-9/11 activities and the legal basis for conducting them.”  (more…)

Countdown - Interview with Graeme Frost’s parents

The SChip program is very important. The Government, our political leaders, have to do a better job of taking care of the American people. Schip is one of those programs that does take care of our citizens. Ugly politically motivated personal attacks on the Frost family have been well documented. The only think that is missing from the documentation is the support of the private insurance companies. They have to be funneling money into some of the Right Wing blogs. If not then they are getting a huge bang for no bucks.

Whether you agree with the expansion of Schip or not, all Americans should agree with the status quo in health care is not acceptable. We have to do something different.

The Carpetbagger Report has more -

The irony of the last couple of weeks is that the debate over the State’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) was supposed to be one of the easy ones. Way back in July, the WaPo’s Christopher Lee noted, “If anything looked like a sure thing in the new Congress, it was that lawmakers would renew, and probably expand, the popular, decade-old State Children’s Health Insurance Program before it expires this year.” It was a no-brainer — who was going to balk at an established, successful program that offers health insurance for kids?

Dems and Republicans reached a compromise version, which drew praise from governors, the medical community, and children’s advocates. Of all the bills likely to spark a political war, this was going to be at the bottom of the list.

And yet, here we are. S-CHIP garnered an inexplicable veto, the right is smearing a 12-year-old kid and his family, and Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee are issuing breathtaking press releases like this one. (more…)

Senator Craig vows to fight on, again

Note that I resisted the title - Senator Craig has his panties in a twist. :-)

Just in case you are wondering Senator Larry Craig is going to appeal his most recent court decision. He also feels that Mitt Romney has treated him unfairly.

Give me a break. The Senator has become Britney Spears. He does something stupid. The press covers it and he whines.

———–

From CNN.com:

Sen. Larry Craig says he will file an appeal Monday over a judge’s refusal to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea stemming from his arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting.

In an interview Sunday with KTVB-TV, Craig repeated he will not resign his post in the Senate and said he will continue to work his legal options.

“It is my right to do what I’m doing,” said Craig, an Idaho Republican. “I’ve already provided for Idaho certainty that Idaho needed — I’m not running for re-election. I’m no longer in the way. I am pursuing my constitutional rights.” (more…)

Are we heading for another 1929 crash?

Are the market dynamics that are at work in the US today, the same dynamics that were at work in 1929?  Bill Moyers invites Robert Kuttner and Former SEC chairman William Donaldson to discuss our “sound economic” fundamentals.  They discuss the lack of regulation of Hedge funds and the sub-prime mortgage disaster.

———

Portions of the Transcript:

ROBERT KUTTNER: I am chilled, as I’m sure you are Mr. Chairman, every time I hear a public official or Wall Street eminence utter the reassuring words “the economic fundamentals are sound.” Those same words were used by President Hoover and the Captains of Finance in the cold winter of 1929. They didn’t restore confidence. The fact is the economic fundamentals are sound if you look at the real economy. It is the financial economy that is dangerously unsound.

<snip>

WILLIAM DONALDSON: No, I don’t think so. I mean– I think that the– not to get into a political diatribe here. But I think the sharing of the benefits of a society are increasingly disproportionate. You talked about people being upset and feeling–. That’s because, you know, they read every day about the fantastic profits being made by hedge fund managers and so forth. And yet they’re out there, two-family, two– Mom and Dad both working. They say there’s no inflation, but they’re paying more for gasoline and paying more for the everyday necessities of life, and so forth. So in effect, the great middle class in this country has not– it’s tough. They have not really shared in what’s going on now.  (more…)

Mychal Bell back to jail

Mychal Bell of Jena 6

This case is just getting more complex. There were rumors about Mychal Bell being not the most clean cut High School student in the world. Well, it appears that he wasn’t even close to being clean cut. I tried to find out more information about Mychal Bell a couple of months ago. Didn’t find squat.

So, what happens now?

——–

From CNN.com:

A black Louisiana teenager at the center of the racially charged “Jena 6″ case was ordered Thursday to spend 18 months in a juvenile facility, after a judge ruled he had violated his probation for earlier juvenile convictions, a source with knowledge of the court proceedings said.

Mychal Bell, 17, who was freed two weeks ago after his adult criminal conviction for beating a white classmate was overturned, was sent to the Renaissance Home for Youth in Alexandria, Louisiana, the source said.

The decision came at the end of a two-day juvenile court hearing that was closed to the media and public. (more…)
