Natasha Bedingfield – Love like this

Sean Kingston is the rapper that spices up this pop tune.  Natasha Bedingfield is a beautiful woman if the light hits her just right.  :-)

Santana – Into the Night

The fact that Santana is still playing and making hits after all of these years is amazing.  He teams up the Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger.  Kroeger has a unique voice and is on a roll of his own.  Nickelback’s latest album, All the Right Reasons, is probably the biggest rock album of this young century.

Cowboys in a must win game

I know that this is only week 9 and the Dallas Cowboys are 6 -1.  But here’s the deal, if the Cowboys are going to go into the playoffs with anything (last year they limbed into the playoffs and looked terrible in a defeat against the Seahawks) they need to win now.  We have 3 division games in the next 3 weeks.  The worst that we can do and still hold our head up is 2 -1.  We must beat the Eagles who have owned Dallas for the last 3 – 4 years.  Donovan McNabb has single handedly spanked the Cowboys year after year.  It is time to send a message.

Offense – The Cowboys have to open the game with a statement.  The statement must read, your defense can’t hang with us.  Patrick Crayton who ran his mouth after the Patriots loss needs to step up.  The running backs need to make a huge contribution by picking up the blitz and catching the ball out of the back field.  A couple of first downs from the backs will keep the linebackers from dropping deep and helping on the outside receivers.   This should open the crossing patterns that Terrell Owens runs so well.  Jason Whitten will be double covered especially on 3rd and long.  Romo must be careful with the ball.  Again it is important for the Cowboys not to turnover the ball and to limit penalties.

Defense – McNabb and Westbrook are the keys.  Brian Westbrook is an amazing football player.  He is fast, he is powerful and has good hands.  If we can control Westbrook and put pressure on McNabb we have a excellent chance to win this game.  Look for the Eagles to try to go deep early and often.  Last year in Philly McNabb seemed to have 30 plays of over 30 yards or more.  Cowboys have to stop the big play.  McNabb got killed during the Giant game.  Tons of sacks and hits on the McNabb.  We have to be able to do the same thing.  We get Tank Johnson and Anthony Henry back in the line up.  This is Tank’s first appearance as a Cowboy.  Henry was playing great before he got hurt against the Vikings.  This will be the first game all year that we will have our full starting secondary.  If Tank is able to get the push up the middle that we are hoping for, it will be a long night for the Philly offense.  Finally, Kevin Curtis can not get lose has he did a few weeks back.  Look for him to draw some couple coverage.

The Cowboys win by forcing Eagle turnovers and Romo getting the ball out of his hands quickly.

Colts vs Pats – game of the year

Highly rated offenses verses highly rated defenses.  2 future first round Hall of Famers (Tony Dungy vs Bill Belichick).  Oh, you probably thought that I was talking about Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning.

First, it is rare that a game with this much hype will live up to its billing.  Secondly, I have been a Dungy/Manning fan for some time.  So, my analysis is geared toward how the Colts can beat the unbeatable.

The Colts will have to control the ball and the clock.  I suspect that the Patriots will try to double Marvin Harrison (who has been hurt but I suspect will play) and Reggie Wayne.  Joseph Addai, Dallas Clark and Anthony Gonzales must have big games.  Gonzales is an X factor.  He is a rookie tight end with great hands.   I would not be surprised if the Indianapolis Colts runs a lot of 2 tight end sets since both tights can run and catch.  This would put the Patriots in a run defense.  If the Patriots would play some sort of nickle or dime defense then the Colts should run out of that formation.  If the Pats play run the Colts should pass out of that formation.  I have never seen any team run a shotgun out of that formation.  It would be amazing if the Colts tried a shotgun from a 2 tight end set.  Like last year, the Colts will have to be able to run the football.   Tony Ugoh, left tackle who has been hurt this year, must control Richard Seymour.

On defense, the Colts will have to figure out how to stop the Patriots offense.  Dwight Freeney and the rest of the front 4 will have to get up the field.  The front 4 of the Colts are going to have to stop the running game and give Brady little or no time to throw the ball.  If Brady has all day to throw the ball it will be a long afternoon for the Colts.  Look at the Patriots losses last year.  Pittsburgh hammered Brady.  The Colts also forced Brady to make some mistakes.  The key is forcing the Patriots to punt the ball.  The Colts defense is very fast.  They hit and hit hard.  Look for Saunders to try to make a play early in the game to turn the tide.

Belichick on offense will gamble on 3rd and 5 or less.  If it is 4th and short look for Belichick to go for it on 4th down.

The Key to this game is not to fall behind.  The team that falls behind will be the team that will lose.  If a team gets a 10 point lead early the game is practically over.  Being 10 points behind will force the team to press.  It will allow the other team’s defense to unleash their front 4 and really attack the line of scrimmage.  Either team can afford to commit an early turnover.  Either team can afford to commit penalties.  This game is for the Super Bowl.  New England is practically unbeatable at home in January.  The Indianapolis Colts have to win if they plan on taking a repeat trip to the Super Bowl.  This should be a great match up.

Just think of this as a second coup

All of those democratic reforms are out the window.  Yes, there has been violence in Pakistan but the answer isn’t more state control.  Instead it is confronting Al Qaeda and other extremist organizations in Pakistan.  Musharraf had let this thing grow over the last couple of years and he chose to make packs and treatise with groups in the north.  That allowed the extremists to get a foot hole and grow.

From WaPo:

“He’s pretty much carrying out a second coup,” said Hasan Askari Rizvi, an analyst. “For all practical purposes, it is direct military rule. And he becomes the supreme ruler of Pakistan. There’s no constitutional limit on him because he’s set aside the constitution.”

Rizvi said that Musharraf’s stated reasons for declaring an emergency were misleading. “It has nothing to do with the insurgency,” he said. “It has to do with Musharraf’s political survival.”   (more…)

Ineffective US foreign policy

We can’t influence anyone any more.  There was a time in America’s distant past (before Bush II) that we could call up an ally and convince them the error of their ways.  We don’t have the clout to do that any more.  Furthermore, we must question such a close alliance with Pervez Musharraf.  This is a man who took power by force and has kept power by force yet, we continually say that we support liberty, freedom and democracy.  So, martial law has been declared by Musharraf.  All we can do is sit by and brood.

From BBC:

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf has defended his decision to declare emergency rule, saying he could not allow the country to commit suicide.

In a televised address he said Pakistan had reached a crisis brought about by militant violence and a judiciary which had paralysed the government.

The chief justice has been replaced and the Supreme Court surrounded by troops.

The moves came as the Supreme Court was due to rule on the legality of Gen Musharraf’s October election victory.

The court was to decide whether Gen Musharraf was eligible to run for re-election last month while remaining army chief.

The BBC’s Barbara Plett reports from Islamabad that fears had been growing in the government that the Supreme Court ruling could go against Gen Musharraf.  (more…)

Spacewalk fixes solar panel

This is why I love NASA.  A problem develops that you never anticipated.  They brainstorm and come up with a workable solution. I love it.

———–

From CNN.com:

A spacewalking astronaut fixed a ripped solar energy panel on the international space station Saturday in a difficult and dangerous emergency procedure.

Spacewalker Scott Parazynski installed five improvised “cufflink” braces on the torn wing and clipped the snarled wires that had ripped it in two places as it was being unfurled Tuesday.

He then watched as the crew slowly deployed the wing to its full 115-foot length, watching closely for more problems. The wing was about three-quarters unfurled when the crew noticed the damage on Tuesday.  (more…)

Finally, some Democratic backbone

Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Patrick Leahy has decided to stand up for the American constitution. “No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture,” said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vermont. Now, that’s what I’m screaming. It isn’t torture or let Americans died. We have had high value prisoners during the Cold War and during WW II. In both cases, the survival of our country and our way of life was at stake. Now, none of that is on the line. The only thing that is on the line is our ability to look ourselves in the mirror. George Bush and other neocons are changing our way of life. They are the ones who started domestic spying without warrants.

Update: Senators Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein have said that the will vote for Mukasey. Very disappointing. There are now clearly enough votes to get Mukasey to the floor of the Senate where he will be confirmed. Schumer has been hammering away at the Bush administration and Alberto Gonzales for illegal wiretapping and many other abuses. Now, that he has a chance to do something he doesn’t. Granted that he was put in a terrible position since he recommended Mukasey to the White House.

Update II: Re-posted. Video Added.  The Carpetbagger explains how a nomination went from unlikely to a piece of cake.  Glenn tells us why the Bush administration picked this guy in the first place.

From CNN.com:

Mukasey has called waterboarding personally “repugnant,” but said he did not know enough about how it has been used to define it as torture. He also said he thought it would be irresponsible to discuss it since doing so could make interrogators and other government officials vulnerable to lawsuits.

“I am eager to restore strong leadership and independence to the Department of Justice,” said Leahy. “I like Michael Mukasey. I wish that I could support his nomination. But I cannot. America needs to be certain and confident of the bedrock principle– deeply embedded in our laws and our values — that no one, not even the president, is above the law.” (more…)
