Obama wins Iowa caucus

Wow. Now this is a surprise. We saw some evidence that Barack Obama was building momentum with the Des Moines Register’s polling. Everyone was downplaying that poll. It appears that the little local paper kicked butt!!

Update: I have added video (of course). The video is the combination of Obama, Edwards and Clinton’s speeches. I think that I picked the best parts. One of the things that Hillary Clinton said that I think was very true, it was/is a good time to be a Democrat.

Hillary losing in Iowa is bad. Placing third is a disaster. She was supposed to be the frontrunner. It was less than a month ago when those talking heads were asking each other if Hillary was a lock on the nomination. We’ll see if Edwards gets a big boost from Iowa. He needs an influx of moolah!

Politico.com (a internet news site that leans to the right) is trying to sell the idea that John McCain is sitting pretty. This logic goes like this - since McCain really campaigned in New Hampshire and didn’t spend much time in Iowa his 4th place (less that 300 votes behind Thompson) is a huge victory. Latest polls show McCain and Romney tied in New Hampshire. If they say so, but third or fourth for someone who was a lock for the nomination just 6 months ago can’t be good. To be fair, McCain has gone thru some trials. His campaign was in a tailspin just 2 - 3 months ago. He was written off as road kill. So, we’ll see.

Chris Dodd and Joseph Biden have thrown in the towel. Both Senators were long shots. It is unclear to me why they campaigned in Iowa. It would seem that they could have started in New Hampshire which is much closer to where they are known. If they ran well in New Hampshire and South Carolina then who knows. They are both thoughtful and capable men. I think that they both added to the discussion. I’m sorry to see them drop out.

From WaPo:

Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) secured victory in the Iowa Democratic caucuses, a stunning affirmation of his message of change and a stinging setback to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) — the long time national frontrunner. Clinton called Obama to concede.

With nearly 1,500 of the state’s 1,781 precincts reporting their results, Obama led with 35 percent of the votes followed by former senator John Edwards and Clinton, both with 30 percent. (more…)

  1. I hope Huckleberry ‘wins’ NH too. Then, ideally an Obama/Edwards ticket would be unbeatable. On the national stage, our preachin’ Huckster-bee will face much scrutiny and will be easy to beat.

I would ask you to think about the electoral math. Does Obama/Edwards make sense? We they are both young and dynamic but wouldn’t a strong democrat from Florida help the ticket even more? I was thinking about former Senator Bob Graham (former intelligence committee chair, former governor of Florida).

    What do you think?

BTW, Obama/Clinton is a losing ticket.

    Thanks for your comment.

  3. I have to agree, Or even Richardson as a Vp. He has the experience to do a good job.

  4. Probably the only people more bummed out by Hillary’s 3rd-place than Hillary are the Huckster, the Mittster, the Oldster & the Mobster. Maybe some of us should register as Republicans and vote for Huckabee in the primaries.

Obama is 46. Graham’s gray eminence would help the ticket.

  5. What I am wondering if the congress doesn’t get some more democrats elected that the republicans will not allow anything to get passed. They would just laugh at Obama or Clinton. They do need someone who can take up the challenge of the VP office now that Cheney has given it so much power. I read somewhere that Rove and Cheney want Obama to win and will have the solid Republican congress measures stand in the way so in the next election the republicans can come in and win and continue the Cheney plans for a dictatorship. Going to be an interesting year we need more congressmen and senators who are willing to go along with the democratic hopefuls. Otherwise won’t it just be a stalemate. The president can want all he wants but still needs congress to write the bills and get them passed.

  6. Obama/Richardson…I like! Richardson has some serious cred as far as foreign policy and diplomatic experience, and except for Edwards, is impressive on issues green. Wonder if good ol US of A is ready for a dual ‘minority’ ticket, though… I never underestimate these things.
Having said that, what a pleasant surprise to see Obama and Huckleberry win Iowa. Definitely two non-traditional candidates. There are many more hurdles to overcome. Will be interesting to see Florida primary results Jan. 29. Had no idea there were so many evangelicals in Iowa. People underestimate their cohesion, I think.
Have a feeling we will all be sweating results to the bitter end :-)

Obama/Richardson. Where’s that V-8 commercial head bonk? Not going to happen. Richardson pulling in what section of the country? New Mexico desert. Ain’t happening. No electoral college votes.

An African American and a Hispanic for president? Look as a Black man I wish America has changed that much but it hasn’t it.

    Richardson for cabinet position.

Let’s focus on New Hampshire. Without a win in New Hampshire and South Carolina all of this talk about Obama will be a distant memory. Hillary will not talk this defeat laying down. She will polish up her message. She will sharpen her attacks on Obama.

If you have someone in the race now is a great time to give them a little lovin’ with a cash donation!!
