Finally progress in Iraq

For years, we, the American people, have been waiting for real progress in Iraq.  There has been none.  Yes, the violence has decreased.  This is nice but it hasn’t made the Iraq politicians have been unable or unwilling to take the next steps.  Oil sharing deal.  Re-Baathification law.

Well, is appears there has been a re-Baathification law.

From RS:

The president was cheered by news that Iraq’s parliament had approved legislation reinstating thousands of former supporters of Saddam Hussein’s dissolved Baath party to government jobs. Bush had prodded Iraqi leaders for more than a year to enact the law.

“It’s an important step toward reconciliation,” Bush said as he opened talks with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa. “It’s an important sign that the leaders of that country understand that they must work together to meet the aspirations of the Iraqi people.” (more…)

NFL Divisional playoffs

I posted my thoughts on the Patriots and Jaguars. So far, Jacksonville is playing well but not perfect.  (Update:  I was right.  The Jaguars receivers and secondary let them down.  The most painful play had to be Honeycutt’s drop inside the 5 yard line.  That was huge.  The Jags were forced to kick a field goal and then they are down 21 - 17.  If they were able to tie the game at 21 they then would have placed at least some pressure on the Patriots.)

Earlier today, the Green Bay Packers destroyed the Seattle Seahawks. There really isn’t much to say.

The Dallas Cowboys will play the New York Giants tomorrow evening. Where to start?

How the Cowboys win: The defense will need to stop the run. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw are a great tandem. Bradshaw is fast, very fast. Jacobs is strong and powerful. The Cowboys need to keep the Giants in 3rd and long. Eli Manning can not get comfortable in the pocket. Plaxico Burress is the big play reciever. Well dressed Amani Toomer is the possession reciever. There is no Jeremy Shockey. Pressure Manning. Pressure Manning and then pressure Manning. This is the key to the game.

On offense, the Cowboys must not turn the ball over. The offensive line needs to make sure that Tony Romo is comfortable in the pocket. They have to open holes for Jones and Barber to run. Hitting a long one early to Terry Glenn will prove that he is back and ready to go. That will put a huge amount of pressure of the Giants secondary. Terrell Owens will need to get involved early. Basically, Romo has to be accurate. He is the engine that drives the Cowboys. IF he is on, the Cowboys are almost unstoppable.

How the Cowboys lose: Manning has all day to pass. The combination of Jacobs and Bradshaw have over 100 yards rushing. Romo has no time to throw and begins forcing things. Romo has 2 or 3 interceptions.

Playoffs - Jags vs Pats

I don’t like the Patriots.  I’m sorry.  I just don’t.  I guess it is just like some folks don’t like the Cowboys.  Over the past week, I have been looking at the Jacksonville Jaguars trying to have a way for them to win over the New England Patriots.  There is no doubt that the Jaguars are playing some very good football.  David Garrard is the real deal.  They have a solid offensive and defensive line.  Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew are a great 1-2 punch in the backfield.  The Jags receivers are just average.  Here’s the problem that I think the Jags have been thinking about all week.  Bill Belichick always will try to take away what you do best.  Therefore, he will try and stop the run.  The only way that I see the Jags opening up the running lanes is to come out throwing the ball.  The Jaguar receivers have to make plays down the field.  That will open up the running lanes and have the Patriots on their heels.  The Jags must control the clock.  After an 8 minute drive, a field goal will not done.  They have to score touchdowns.

The Jaguars have a solid, physical defense.  That’s nice but that isn’t going to get it done verses the #1 offense of all-time.   The Jags must pressure Tom Brady.  If Brady is allowed to stand back there and check his hair in the mirror, it is going to be a long day for the Jags.  I know that the Jags don’t like to blitz but they are going to have to blitz to get to Brady.  They have to hit him.  They are going to have harass him like Jeff Garcia was harassed last week.  The Jags secondary will have to play better than they ever have.  They have to shut down - Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Donte Stallworth.

I’m not saying that I will not be rooting for the Jags because I will be BUT I know they are going to have to play a perfect game to win in the Pats backyard.

Marion Jones - How the mighty have fallen

msnbc photoMarion Jones, the Olympic sprinter, was on the top of the world. She was in American Express and Gatorade commercials. She was cashing in on her fame and her good looks. All of that has changed in the last several months. Her endorsements dried up as allegations of steroid usage began to grow louder and louder. Recently she was found to have taken a banned substance and was stripped of her 5 gold medals. She has just plead guilty to lying to investigators on a check fraud scheme. She has been sentenced to 6 months in jail. How terribly sad.

From WaPo:

Former Olympic champion Marion Jones was sentenced by a federal judge to six months in prison yesterday for lying to investigators about her use of steroids and involvement in a check-fraud scheme, completing one of the most spectacular falls from grace of any athlete in any sport.

Jones, who won five medals at the 2000 Summer Games and was heralded as the world’s greatest female athlete, received the maximum sentence recommended by prosecutors from U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas, who said he wanted to send a message to athletes who abuse performance-enhancing drugs. Republicans love Ronald Reagan

The Republicans very love Ronald Reagan.  It would seem to me that as a Republican candidate you would want to be your own person.  Last night, at the South Carolina debates, everyone wanted to be Ronnie.

TPM has put together a great video.

Countdown - Bushed

John Ashcroft - When the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey needed to find an outside lawyer to monitor a large corporation willing to settle criminal charges out of court last fall, he turned to former Attorney General John Ashcroft, his onetime boss. With no public notice and no bidding, the company awarded Mr. Ashcroft an 18-month contract worth $28 million to $52 million. [NYT]

CIA torture tapes - The former official, Jose Rodriguez Jr., has also told the House intelligence committee through a letter from his attorney that he will refuse to testify next week about the tapes unless he is granted immunity from prosecution for his statements, the sources said.  [WaPo]  This move reminds some of Oliver North and Iran-Contra.

Wiretaps shut down - Telecommunications carriers shut down some covert surveillance lines established by the FBI because the bureau failed to make timely bill payments, a Justice Department review found Thursday. [USA Today]
