Kucinich not allowed to debate

Why was Dennis Kucinich not allowed to debate? Because his support was not enough? Why is Fred Thompson allowed to do anything? He is polling in the single digits. (3% in Michigan this morning and 9% in one of the national polls. [In the same national poll Dennis pulled in a whopping 1%. )

From Msnbc.com:

The Nevada Supreme Court said Tuesday MSNBC can exclude Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich from a candidate debate.

Lawyers for NBC Universal Inc., had asked the high court to overturn a lower court order that the cable TV news network include the Ohio congressman or pull the plug on broadcasting the debate Tuesday night with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards. (more…)

Blogging and other issues

Blogging will be light for the next several days. I’m at a trauma conference and I’m supposed to be paying attention.

  • What was the point of Hillary Clinton opening up the race thing? I heard a discussion on Ed Schultz show yesterday where a Black woman stated that Black women in South Carolina were being forced to chose between being a women (voting for Hillary) and being Black (voting for Obama). This is where this argument has headed. This is craziness? You mean a Black man can’t be sensitive to women’s issues? A White woman can’t be sensitive to the needs of the Black community? Give me a break. Officially, there has been a truce.
  • For reasons that are unclear to me Senator Mitchell is testifying on Capital Hill today about Baseball and steroids. First of all, I would hope that Congress has better things to do with their time. Secondly, it is clear that Roger Clemens took steroids, just as Barry Bonds has. You can’t put on 30 - 40 lbs of muscle in your late 30’s to early forties. I don’t care what kind of great training the player is doing. Can you lose fat? Sure. I’m talking about putting on a significant amount of muscle. Steroids.
  • I’m typing this post on my Dell Inspiron computer. I bought this computer about 4 or 5 years ago. It has been a good little computer. I really haven’t had any major problems. I have been able to do just about anything that iI wanted with this computer. It is a little heavy but I have the wide screen. Today, Apple has announced a thin computer. I mean a super-thin, light-weight computer (0.76 inches thick). If I only had $1700… okay, $1800 laying around.
  • John Conyer (D-Mi) chairman of the House Judiciary committee, has called on the attorney general to name a special prosecutor to look into how and who destroyed the CIA’s torture tapes.
  • Republican candidate Mike Huckabee stated last night that he wanted to amend the constitution so that it is consistent with God (banning abortion and gay marriage).  Now, I have a problem any time someone believes that they know the will of God.  When scholars disagree, then it is clear that none of us have a monopoly on the will of God.

Is Houston A Sanctuary City?

Is Houston, Texas a so-called sanctuary city for illegal or undocumented immigrants?

This is an ongoing subject of debate here in Houston.

The core of the matter is do police and other officials ask people they come in contact with, if they are legally in the United States.

It seems that on the whole, whatever city officials might claim, the basic policy of Houston and much of the surrounding area conforms with the idea of a sanctuary city.

Though here is a conflicting view from the Houston Catholic Worker.

From the Catholic Worker article, here are some proposed immigration policy guidelines from the Catholic Bishops of California.

NBC trying to exclude Kucinich from debate

bmj-kucinich NBC trying to exclude Kucinich from debate

There are lots of things that I understand and tons that I don’t. Keeping Dennis Kucinich out of the democratic debate is simply unfair. It seems that Dennis has won a court battle to be in the upcoming Nevada debate but NBC is appealing.  Why?  Is Kucinich going to hurt ratings?

———-

From AP:

NBC News said Monday it will appeal a judge’s ruling rather than include Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich in a candidates’ debate in Nevada.

“We disagree with the judge’s decision and are filing an appeal,” said a statement provided by Jeremy Gaines, a vice president for MSNBC, sponsor of Tuesday night’s debate. Gaines said the parent network would seek an immediate hearing before the Nevada Supreme Court. (more…)

The Pledge of Allegiance and Barack Obama

Obama and the pledge; from Time

I figured that I would leave the Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama tiff for a little while. I received a comment on my blog in which the reader asked how Oprah could endorse Barack Obama when he wouldn’t even put his hand over his heart when saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

This stems from an e-mail that has been circulating for several months. The e-mail goes something like this: “He refused to not only put his hand on his heart during the pledge of allegiance, but refused to say the pledge” a chain email with the picture of Obama said, “how in the hell can a man like this expect to be our next Commander-in-Chief?”

First of all, how stupid would Barack Obama have to be to openly do something that would alienate so many voters? I mean it’s just not plausible. This is clearly some neoconservative garbage that is drummed up to give a certain type of voter a question about Barack Obama’s patriotism. These are same neoconservatives that spread the rumor that he spent several years in a madrasah. This also is not true. These are the same groups of people that stresshis middle name is Hussein. Some of the far right-wing radio show hosts have even called him “Barack Saddam Hussein Obama.” Clearly not his name.

This picture was taken at Senator Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry. The participants were not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance but instead they were standing for the national anthem. This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that the patriotism police will attract Barack Obama or any other Democratic candidate. Remember the big brouhaha over the fact that Barack Obama did not wear a USA flag lapel pin?

Barack Obama like all of the candidates running for president is a true patriot. He has put himself on the line because he believes that he has a vision for the future of America. He’s exposed both himself and his family to this type of retarded criticism.

Finally, I would guess that Oprah Winfrey would not be stupid enough to endorse a candidate that wasn’t a patriot. Oprah tends to have her ducks in a row when she does something.

Update:

§171. Conduct during playing

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

There is more information that you ever wanted to know about the flag - here.
