History Of South Carolina Primary

Republicans and Democrats are campaigning hard in South Carolina.Republicans vote in that state on January 19. Democrats vote on January 26.

Here is a link to some basic facts about South Carolina. The population of South Carolina is roughly 4.4 million.

Beginning with 1980, South Carolina’s Presidential nominating primary has played an important role in selecting Republican nominees.

Every winner of the Republican primary in South Carolina since 1980 has gone on to win the nomination of his party. In a number of these instances, the South Carolina win played a direct role in the nomination victory.

In 2008, this primary is important for both parties.

The origin of South Carolina as a force in Republican Presidential politics can be traced back to the political consultant Lee Atwater. In 1980, Mr. Atwater helped get the South Carolina primary scheduled early in the campaign season to help Ronald Reagan. (Photo below.)

Worst person in the world - Huckster

Every now and then, you need to recognize when you have sung something off key. You need to either fix the song or pick another song to sing. Mike Huckabee continues to sing to change the constitution to a line it with his interpretation of the Bible.

Obama injects an interesting instrument of change

Maybe Barack Obama has been up too long. Maybe he has new researchers. I don’t know but I do know that as a progressive candidate I would never mention Ronald Reagan as an agent for change. Obama is running as a candidate for positive change NOT negative change. Yes, it is change. Yes, Reagan took the country in a different direction but the WRONG direction.

Hopefully, Barack will get some sleep tonight and have a better day tomorrow. Yuck.

Economy continues to head toward the toilet

Although neocons will try to tell us that the fundamentals are solid. NOT! Anytime we have huge banks investing in hundreds of thousands of questionable loans, how is that sound? Then instead of looking into the investment, other investment groups that are either too lazy or too greedy to actually study what they are getting, will buy chunks of these sub-prime mortgages. So, Merrill Lynch, Countrywide and Citigroup are just a couple of well known institutions which are now taking a bath.

Let’s look at other data. Americans aren’t saving. How can they? Nothing is built to last except Craftsmen tools. Not cars and certainly not cellphones. Median income has been stagnant under Bush therefore it is no surprise that no one has any money to save.

Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan Ben Bernanke testified on capital hill today that a stimulus package needs to be put in place pretty quickly. Wasn’t this the guy who was telling us just a couple of months ago that everything was hunky dory? I’m just askin’??

Update: I forgot to mention that the stock market tanked today.

From AP:

United for urgent action, the White House and Congress raced toward emergency steps Thursday to rescue the national economy from a possible recession, including tax rebates of $300 or more for many Americans.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke endorsed the idea of putting money into the hands of those who would spend it quickly and boost the flagging economy. (more…)

TCR - Word, sort of

Stephen Colbert explains why he has always been anti-union.

TCR - Mitt wins Michigan

Stephen Colbert has a little fun with Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani. Then again, they are such fun loving kinda guys, who wouldn’t have fun with them?

TDS - Jonah Goldberg

Now, I must say that I have only read a few articles by Jonah Goldberg.  I really didn’t like any of them.  So, it is no surprise that Jon Stewart kind of takes Goldberg to the woodshed.  (h/t tim)

Garrett to stay with the Cowboys

Jason Garrett has interviewed with the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons. It looks like he has turned down both jobs. He may be staying in Dallas. I think that this would be great for Dallas and Garrett in the long run.

Hillary and her followers

For the past 2 weeks, Hillary Clinton has released a number of folks to tell us about the “real” Barack Obama. I will be very happy when the firing ugly words between democrats is over.

I loved this cartoon so I wanted to post it. I usually don’t post cartoons because some artists are very offended if their work is posted.

Photos of Lincoln’s second inauguration found

It is amazing what you can find at the Library of Congress.  Totally cool.  Unfortunately, the photos are of the crowd and none of them are of President Abraham Lincoln.

Fergie - Clumsy

Fergie. Clumsy. Cool video. I’m not sure about the song, yet.

TDS - Bush’s Bucket List

So, why did President Bush wait until his last year to start the peace process? I find it kind of funny. Jon Stewart has a funny twist. (BTW, I need to see that Bucket Movie.)

Worst persons in the world

Fox and Friends - getting the story wrong, again

Editorial page at Investor’s Business Daily - Racist statements stating that Obama pledged when he joined the Trinity United Church of Christ that he would uphold black values system (editorial is here).

Fred Kagan - Iraq war cheerleader, stated that the new Baathist laws are like the beginning of their civil rights legislation. Doubt it.

I can smear better than you

One would figure that after the very public smearing of McCain by Bush in 2000, that behavior would have stopped. NOT!! It seems that we should be able to tailor a law that don’t suppress speech but jail these knuckleheads. Why is the same guy that smeared McCain in 2000 now working for Romney? I’m just asking. Isn’t Romney supposed to be the great, straight as an arrow, fair play Mormon? Guess not.

Keith Olbermann discusses this with Jonathan Alter.
