Huckabee against abortion

Mike Huckabee should be starting to scare you. It is clear that he would try to push through multiple amendments to the Constitution to align the Constitution with the Holy Bible as he sees it.

The video is a brief clip of Huckabee at an anti-abortion rally on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

Bushed

Keith Olbermann’s Bushed segment reminds all of us of the many, many, many scandals of the Bush Administration. There seems to be a new one every week.

CIA torture tapes - seems another CIA detainee states that he was taped

Jose Padilla - the dirty bomber. The Bush Administration wanted life. They didn’t get anywhere close. I don’t know if Padilla desired to get life or not. I do know that the judge that sentenced him to 17 years criticized the government’s handling of the case.  I was kinda surprised that Glenn Greenwald didn’t have something on this.  I’m sure that he will today.
Gonzo-Gate - Alberto Gonzales is the gift that keeps on giving. The House and Senate ethics committees are looking into whether congressional republicans tampered with witnesses who were preparing to testify before Congress.

Democratic Debate or WWF?

Reposted.

I’m done with the “I said,” “I never said,”and “she said.” Hillary has taken a page right out of the Karl Rove playbook. She has twisted Obama’s words. Barack Obama never said that he loved the Republicans. He never said that. (look at this post for the video and listen to what he really said) Instead, he said that Reagan was an agent of change. This is true. I hate the analogy but it is true. I would have used Ghandi or Teddy Roosevelt as agents of change. Unfortunately, those references would have sent some to the internet and would have left other scratching their heads.

What Hillary has done is not politics. It is down right nasty and dishonest. She starts attacking Obama because he hasn’t spelled out exactly how he is going to pay for his foreign aid programs. Okay. But what about her health care program? Hillary Clinton has had 10 years to formulate a health care program. Where are her numbers? How would someone like me get paid? Physician reimbursement has dropped across the board for years. Hell, Cardiac Surgeons used to be able to make over $2 million per year. Now, if they are lucky they might be able to make a quarter of that. Nurses need a salary increase. Where is that in her progressive plan? Hospitals desperately need more social workers. Where is that in her plan?

I simply reject the politics of personal destruction. I reject the politics of Democrats eating their own. This is so disappointing. I’m pissed.

TCR has some thoughts.

(BTW, I’m at another trauma conference so I’m done blogging for tonight. I’ll take some Pepto and watch the rest of the “debate” and post some video tomorrow.)

Update: Video added.

As I was driving back home today, I had a chance to hear Lynn Samuels and earlier I heard Alex Bennett. From listening to these 2 left wing talk show hosts, I learned that Barack Obama is an asshole and it full of himself. Again, these are not right wing talking heads but “thoughtful” progressives.

Alex Bennett tried to spin the argument that because Obama spoke on Martin Luther King day that he was using the holiday for personal gain which “proved” that he was an egotistical, ass. I wish I had time to call his show this morning because I would have asked what would have happened if Barack Obama didn’t speak on MLK day. What kind of noise would he have heard from liberals and Blacks? Was he too good for Martin Luther King? Barack was in an impossible situation. If you can’t see that and it appears that Alex Bennett couldn’t, then Bennett isn’t worthy of the national stage, IMHO.

Lynn Samuels basically stated that she is supporting Hillary Clinton because Hillary was a woman. What? If that is her position that’s fine but at least try to foster some support for the other Democratic candidates. Nope. She didn’t. If she is just going to be a gossip queen who is going to talk about fashion and not examine the issues then she belongs with Sally Jessie and Montel.

Fred Thompson is out

Fred Thompson is out.  Who is really surprised?  Tucker Carlson is surprised.  He is wondering why didn’t his candidacy take off.  The answer is quite simple.  Fred Thompson had nothing unique to say.  If you are reaching back to 1985 to answer today’s questions with Reagan’s thoughts and words, you are going to lose.   The country has moved on.  The worse president in modern history has tried to out do Reagan by being Reagan on steroids.  So, to try to be Reagan or like the rest of the candidates, Reagan-lite, isn’t going to work.

Look at opinion polls, the country wants something that isn’t republican.  The country wants to rebuild infra-structure and to re-build the middle class.  The country is looking for someone to repair some of the environmental damage that has been done.  The country wants a new direction on the economy.  The country doesn’t want a withdrawal of our troops from Iraq over 10 years, they want it over 10 months.  The job is done so bring them home.

From WaPo:

Former senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee, whose candidacy fizzled after a summer of expectations, pulled out of the Republican presidential race yesterday after disappointing finishes in all of the primary contests held so far.

In a terse, three-sentence statement, the actor-politician abandoned a candidacy that once seemed to offer everything a Republican voter could want: solid conservative credentials, Washington experience, Hollywood panache, Southern charm and a commanding personality.  (more…)

BMJ - Olbermann

Keith Olbermann dropped in on Bill Moyers a couple of weeks ago.  This is a very good conversation.  Yep, I know it aired over a month ago but I’m been busy.  :-)

Bill Moyers asks about journalism and possibly going too far with commentaries.  Definitely worth a look see.

Yes, Congress is getting some stuff done

Congress has been blamed for not stopping the war and everything else including post nasal drip.  Well, the Senate passed a bill which raised pay for our troops.  This was included in a $696 Billion Military Spending bill.

$700 Billion.  Damn that a ton of money.

———–

From WaPo:

The Senate voted Tuesday to approve a revised defense bill authorizing a 3.5 percent pay raise for troops while sidestepping a veto showdown with President Bush.

The 91-3 vote sends the $696 billion measure to Bush for his expected signature.

The president had rejected an earlier version of the bill because of a provision that would have guaranteed that victims of state-sponsored abuse can sue foreign governments in court and collect judgments by seizing its assets inside the United States. Bush said that would have exposed Iraq to high-dollar lawsuits over abuse during the Saddam Hussein era at a time when the country is struggling to rebuild its infrastructure.  (more…)

Lose the fat; Lose the diabetes

roux-en-ybypass Lose the fat; Lose the diabetesIt has been known for over 30 years that type II Diabetes Mellitus was associated with obesity. It has also been shown that folks who lose weight through exercise can decrease or eliminate their insulin requirements. I heard a presentation over 10 years ago by Walter Pories, former Chairman of Surgery at East Carolina University School of Medicine, that obesity surgery decreased and eliminated in some patients the need for insulin. It was a great presentation.

Now, I read some else has done this exact same study and the study has made it into the lay press. AP has picked up the study. There are now several studies which all show the same result and it makes sense. In morbidly obese patients losing weight is a good thing.

Let me add a disclaimer - I’m a surgeon. I don’t do this operation. No operation is without risk. The risks and benefits of this procedure need to be weighted with your surgeon.

———–

From AP:

A new study gives the strongest evidence yet that obesity surgery can cure diabetes.

Patients who had surgery to reduce the size of their stomachs were five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years than were patients who had standard diabetes care, according to Australian researchers. (more…)

Countdown - President Clinton - Obama rift

I have a problem with a former President campaigning against another Democrat. As the leader of the Democratic party, Bill Clinton, is the ex facto leader of the party. He still has responsibilities. Maybe he doesn’t and I’m just blowing smoke but it sure seems like he should stay above the fray and he isn’t.

Countdown - Bushed

The economy - Could it be possible that George W. Bush’s tax policy has completely failed?

David Petraeus - Since Iraq is going so well. There are rumors that the White House is going to promote Petraeus to NATO commander.

Missing E-mails - Nobody knows nothing.
