Worst Persons in the World

Keith Olbermann has a great line up of worst persons today.

  • Frank Luntz for being a racist, sexist moron
  • Roger Clements for continuing to lie about his steroid usage
  • Bush Administration wins the gold with Mike McConnell and Michael Mukasey for writing the very predictable scare letter to Congress saying that we are missing valuable intelligence.

Is going negative passe?

Passe you say? Last night Senator Hillary Clinton has a line that she no doubt rehearsed with her staff. It was a zinger. Barack Obama was offering “change you can Xerox.” She got boo’ed. Why? In years past, that would have worked. Obama would have been labeled the Xerox king. There would have been t-shirts. Not this year.

From McClatchy:

“It looks like people are just burned out on that stuff,” said Peter W. Schramm, the executive director of the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs in Ohio.

In state after state, voters said they moved from Clinton to Obama — or, on the Republican side, from Mitt Romney to John McCain or Mike Huckabee — partly because they were tired of what seemed like politics as usual.  (more…)

Oil Prices, please hit me again, harder

keefe-crude-oil-prices Oil Prices, please hit me again, harder

It can not be a coincidence that Oil companies are raking in profits by the tanker and both George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are oil men. So, as prices at the pump surge, what are we to do? Well, we can keep handing our paychecks to the oil companies who have made over 1/2 a trillion dollars in profit since 2001 (a half a TRILLION), we can pressure our congressmen to fight back. The oil tax breaks that are killing our economy need to be rescinded. Secondly, we have to look push for renewable energy. We need more legislation like HR. 5351. Finally, we need to get over the I’m not sure that this or that is clean enough. We need to get started. We can sort out what is working and what isn’t once we pass GO!

From AP:

Gas prices jumped Friday to their highest level since June, a possible preview of what many analysts believe will be a record spike in pump prices this spring.

But the current price surge could be short-lived. While gasoline has risen sharply in recent days in response to oil’s dramatic climb to a new record above $101 a barrel, gas supplies have quietly grown to their highest level in 14 years.  (more…)

Countdown - 19th debate

Keith Olbermann has a nice summary of the democratic debate. He discusses the debate with Richard Wolffe.

Game, Set, Match

Hillary Clinton knew she had to do extremely well in the debate.  She knew that she really had to land a knockout punch.  It didn’t happen.  As a matter of fact, this may have been Barack Obama’s best debate.

Here’s Barack turning that plagiarism claim into complete emptiness.   He was ready for the question and he completely smashed it into a thousand pieces.

More on the debates later because I believe that this debate had less garbage and more substance than any other.

I’m tired

Melissa Harris-Lacewell was here yesterday.  She was great.  If you missed her at UNCA, you missed a GREAT lecture on politics and how we think about candidates.

More on her and how I was running around like a chicken with his cut off, later.

Obama Rally In Houston

As Errington mentioned in a recent post, I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Barack Obama rally held in Houston on Tuesday, 2/19.

Here are some facts and observations about this event.

It was held in the Downtown basketball arena used by the Houston Rockets. Nearly every seat in the house was full. Concession stands were open and people were having hot dogs and beer just like at the basketball game.

The crowd estimate I read was 19,000 people.

The line to get in the arena had been quite long. It took me maybe 75 minutes to get inside. Many waited much longer. I saw maybe 20 people in the line reading a book or a magazine.

A rough guess would be that maybe 60% of the crowd was black. I saw a number of older black men wearing suits and ties. This suggested that the rally was important to these men.

I saw a number of mixed race couples.

I felt there was a greater racial diversity among the younger people at the rally. But there people of all colors and all ages in attendance.

It is amazing to consider that Houston was a segregated city 45 years ago.
