Vote McCain?

John McCain

BigJon wrote an interesting response to one of my posts. He enthusiastically endorsed John McCain. This was rather curious. What were his reasons for supporting John McCain? (I have talked about my problems with John McCain - here, here and here) Here’s BigJon’s response -

Thanks, and I believe as I am sure most would, that McCain will alter , but not raise taxes. Also, I believe that Obama will continue to excite the young, the minorities and the poor, but still is intent on living in the past. I dont care if he voted against the war. This is now the second longest war in our history. And we are winning. And I want to know if pulling our troops out now, as Obama says, will help and if so, how??? And why would Obama claim he would take the fight to Pakistan, our ally, but not continue the course in Iraq, our former enemy. And now an important country to help change.

That’s BigJon’s thoughts - What are yours?

Democracy?

James MadisionKC (a frequent commentor to my blog, I appreciate it) wrote an interesting comment the other day. He stated that democracy leads to socialism which leads to communism. I asked him to elaborate. He said an incredibly interesting response. I’m posting a portion of it here –

Just take a look at the 10 Planks of the Communist Manifesto:

Ask yourself this:

Why would the U.N., give China more accolades and praise than other country for its model of government?

Why should the playing field be level?

Why should we have shared responsibility?

Have you heard these terms and sayings?

Why should I pay for my neighbors health care, when I can barely afford my own?

I bet you have.

First of all, again thank you for your comments, I really appreciated. Secondly, I think is important for us to focus on what we know. We know that over the last 200 years that we basically we go to the polls and we elect people for the House of Representatives, the Senate and the President. As a whole, I believe that everyone could agree on this.

Is this a democracy? I guess it depends on your definition. Excluding irregularities in Ohio and Florida, the House of Representatives is elected through a democratic process and the president is elected through a democratic process. The Senate, because the representation is not proportional to population, can be argued is not a democratic body. We also have the Electoral College. This is clearly not a democratic process. If you go back and read what James Madison wrote, our founding fathers understood that this was a compromise. [Read more →]

Kim took the photo.

Here is a history of Plainfield, Vermont.

The 2000 population of Plainfield was 1286.

Here are some facts about Plainfield.

I Will Vote Twice Tomorrow

All loyal citizens value the vote very much. The right to take part in our great democracy is at the core of who we are as Americans.

I value my right to vote so much that I’ve often wished I could vote twice on Election Day.

Yet , in almost all cases, the law has not seen fit to allow me to do so.

The exception is how presidential primaries are conducted in Texas.

Here in Texas, we have precinct caucuses after the polls are closed.

You go where you voted during the day, and a caucus is held to award an additional pool of delegates to the candidates.

Here is an explanation of the system from the Houston Chronicle.

Who is allowed to vote twice?

In theory, any person who voted in the primary.

In practice, it’s somebody not working a night shift and somebody who does not have to worry about child care that evening. It’s somebody with a car unless you have a friend or family member willing to shuttle you back and forth to the polls a number of times on Primary Day.
