What we know

John McCainOn the Republican side, Mike Huckabee was the little engine that couldn’t.  He tried and tried but Florida was his Waterloo.  He needed to do well (interpret as win) in South Carolina and Florida and he really didn’t.  The money dried up and McCain just kept on rolling.  Huckabee formally pulled out of the race this evening but for all practical purposes he has been done for weeks.

John McCain made his “I won’t let you down” speech.  This means that he will push for tax cuts for the rich.  He will push to keep as many troops as possible in Iraq for as long as possible.  This means that those in the “in” crowd would still be in if John McCain is president.  Look for retardedly conservative judges.  McCain will have be more conservative than Bush, Jr. or Reagan.  John McCain goes to the White House tomorrow to kiss the ring of Bush once more. President Bush will formally endorse John McCain.  (I’m sorry there is nothing in life that I want this badly.  McCain has sold his soul to become president.  Everything that he was against he is now for.  The guy, George Bush,  who buried him with a huge bouquet of lies, is the guy that he needs to help raise money from the fat cats.  I’m sorry I just couldn’t do it.)

On the Democratic side, I think that Obama is doing what he thought he was going to do.  He was going to make the big races close.  This means that he keeps the lead.  With Vermont going to Obama and Rhodes Island going to Clinton, it is a draw.  Now, if Texas and Ohio split and it looks like they might, the night is a draw.  There will not be any significant movement in the delegate count.  So, what does that mean?  It means that it is increasing likely that Obama can not land a knockout punch but Clinton can’t do much more than survive in the ring.  With Wyoming and Mississippi coming up, I’m not sure what to make of this race.  Obama seems to have enough of a lead to make a Clinton come back extremely unlikely but she is finally raising money.  The Clinton camp finally has some emotion and aren’t just going through the motions.

I suspect that this race will not better but instead will get nastier.  We have seen the race turn ugly on a couple of occasions but calmer heads have pulled both partied out of the mud.  The 3 am commercial was unforgivable in my mind.  It is a Republican fearmonger tactic.   Expect more.

I have had enough for tonight.  I’ll check the results again in a minute but I don’t see anything significant coming out of tonight.

Woodrow Wilson Keeble wins Medal of Honor

I feel chills when I read what Woodie Keedle did. I have seen Fire and Ice on the History Channel. The Korean War was no picnic. Woodie truly went above and beyond the call of duty. It is a great tragedy of our Country that we did not recognize this brave man before he died. It took another 20 years before he would be honored.

Woodrow Wilson Keeble is the first Sioux to recieve the medal of honor.

Update: BTW, I scanned a few of those Right Wing Blogs like Michele Malkin and Drudge - nothing.  Air Hot - nothing.  Say Anything does have something but then the blog is based in North Dakota where Woodie Keedle was from.  I guess my point is I thought that the Right loved our troops?

The Citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Master Sergeant Woodrow W. Keeble distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Sangsan-ni, Korea, on October 20, 1951. On that day, Master Sergeant Keeble was an acting platoon leader for the support platoon in Company G, 19th Infantry, in the attack on Hill 765, a steep and rugged position that was well defended by the enemy. Leading the support platoon, Master Sergeant Keeble saw that the attacking elements had become pinned down on the slope by heavy enemy fire from three well-fortified and strategically placed enemy positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Master Sergeant Keeble dashed forward and joined the pinned-down platoon. Then, hugging the ground, Master Sergeant Keeble crawled forward alone until he was in close proximity to one of the hostile machine-gun emplacements. Ignoring the heavy fire that the crew trained on him, Master Sergeant Keeble activated a grenade and threw it with great accuracy, successfully destroying the position. Continuing his one-man assault, he moved to the second enemy position and destroyed it with another grenade. Despite the fact that the enemy troops were now directing their firepower against him and unleashing a shower of grenades in a frantic attempt to stop his advance, he moved forward against the third hostile emplacement, and skillfully neutralized the remaining enemy position. As his comrades moved forward to join him, Master Sergeant Keeble continued to direct accurate fire against nearby trenches, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Inspired by his courage, Company G successfully moved forward and seized its important objective. The extraordinary courage, selfless service, and devotion to duty displayed that day by Master Sergeant Keeble was an inspiration to all around him and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Obama, Japan

In Texas, there is a town that has just about every name that you can think of. There is a Paris, Texas. A Buffalo, Texas. There is a town called Cut-N-Shoot and another one called Nowhere. As far as I know there isn’t an Obama, Texas but there is an Obama, Japan. Now, you can’t beat that. Residents believe that they are bringing Barack Obama luck.

I wonder if there is an Errington, Japan?

100% conviction rate

guantanamo_action 100% conviction rateI think that whoever is the Democratic nominee for President will need to have the smartest team of political advisers ever assembled. The Republican political machine will not go into the sweet night quietly. They have far too much to lose. Let’s think about this - in the next 4 - 8 years, there are going to be at least 3 and maybe 5 Supreme Court judges who will retire. With a Democratic lead House and Senate and a Democratic White House, could Donald Rumsfeld and Alberto Gonzales be hauled before a court and found guilty of crimes against humanity? Could a former President and Vice President have to sit trial for outing a CIA agent? Would companies that have raped the American people, by pocketing millions and millions of dollars by being contractors in Iraq, have to re-pay moneys that were stolen or poorly accounted for? Did you see that a defense contractor has placed a $3 billion bid for Diebold.

I’m just asking because we have been holding Khalid Shaikh Mohammed for at least 5 years. Now, just before the 2008 election, there is going to be a trial. I wouldn’t be surprised if other things pop up to galvanize the base and distract from the Presidential race.

The Nation has a great article on this trail. Former chief prosecutor Col. Morris Davis says that the trials are rigged. Who’s surprised? After Lieutenant Commander Charles Swift (I thought that I posted his story but I haven’t. I’ll do that tomorrow.) resigned after he was passed over for promotion, he told his story of a rigged process.

From The Nation:

Secret evidence. Denial of habeas corpus. Evidence obtained by waterboarding. Indefinite detention. The litany of complaints about the treatment of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay is long, disturbing and by now familiar. Nonetheless, a new wave of shock and criticism greeted the Pentagon’s announcement on February 11 that it was charging six Guantánamo detainees, including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, with war crimes–and seeking the death penalty for all of them.

Now, as the murky, quasi-legal staging of the Bush Administration’s military commissions unfolds, a key official has told The Nation that the trials have been rigged from the start. According to Col. Morris Davis, former chief prosecutor for Guantánamo’s military commissions, the process has been manipulated by Administration appointees to foreclose the possibility of acquittal. (more…)
