Under the Supreme Court Model Code (the rules of enthical behaviour for lawyers), an attorney cannot allow the ccourt to be intentionally mislead. They have an absolute requirement to report perjury to the court. These guys should have told the court they knew the suspect was innocent, although they could not reveal the perp. This was an avoidable tragedy - and it illustrateds how the legal "profession" imploded after the rules of conduct were lightened up (most people recognize this as the event that allowed an attorney to advertise). The reason people HATE lawyers - even more than Used Car Salesman - is they have become dishonest defenders of their own pocketbooks, not defenders of the Law.
