It’s Over, Who Won?

Although it’s not the end of the Democratic nomination race, the Rules and By-Laws Committee have concluded their business. So, who won? I’m not sure that anyone won or lost. I think it was a draw.

Senator Barack Obama had a significant lead in the delegate count. Because of this, he could afford to be “generous” in compromising something. He offered to have the delegations of Florida and Michigan seated so their votes would only count half as much. In order for Senator Hillary Clinton’s camp to have any chance of convincing superdelegates that she is the One, she needed to have all of the delegates seated at a full vote. That didn’t happen. Therefore, Obama won because he got what he wanted. He wanted to come out of this process with his significant elected delegate lead intact. He was able to do this.

Let’s remember that Clinton was fighting an uphill battle in trying to get the delegates seated at full capacity. Both Florida and Michigan thumbed their noses at the Democratic National Committee. Candidates signed a pledge that really excluded Florida and Michigan. It had to be done. So, what Clinton was trying to do was to reverse what had really already been decided. So, she won a partial victory also.

More soon.
