Where’s the Outrage?

Michelle Obama is going to be a great First Lady.

How do I know this?

Because I’m going to accept her as the person she is and needs to be to survive and suceed in the role of First Lady. I’m going to let her define herself instead of being defined by Fox News as you see above.

These are things going to be said about any prominent black woman no matter how successful she is in life.

The message is that no black family is “legitimate”— Even one soon to be living in the White House.

The good news is that the voting public is paying attention and they will reject this stuff next November.

First Lady is a hard job and it merits great respect.

Some said Nancy Reagan was too adoring of her husband. But Mrs. Reagan had the right to be the person she was. Or, like anybody in public view, Mrs. Reagan had plenty of reason to put forth the image she wished to project. 

Lady Bird Johnson ran LBJ’s business affairs. Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most famous people in the world for her humanitarian efforts.

Whatever a First Lady—or First Spouse as the case will someday be— wishes to be, that’s fine with me.

All people need to be is who they are. Or who they need to be to survive the attention of being in the shadow of a President and living in the shadow of the physical danger a President always faces.    

Also, I know Mrs. Obama and Mr. Obama are going to rise up the level of people’s hopes and expectations. I’m not sure that the maturity and gravity are there yet. But I have faith it will come.

Michelle Obama is charting a path no one before has charted. I’m fully on board with her as both she and the nation move forward.

Barack Obama has started a new web site called fight the smears. Barack and his team have proven that they are not going to be Swift Boated. It isn’t going to happen. Not this time. Not in this election.

Yesterday, I brought you a weather story and today, I’m bringing you another. Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In spite of a lot of work and preparation in Cedar Rapids, the Cedar river has overflowed its banks. Over 4000 houses have been flooded.

The Cedar River poured over its banks here Thursday, forcing the evacuation of nearly 4,000 homes, causing a railroad bridge to collapse and leaving cars underwater on downtown streets.

Officials estimated that 100 blocks were underwater in Cedar Rapids, where several days of preparation could not hold back the rain-swollen river. Rescuers had to use boats to reach many stranded residents, and people could be seen dragging suitcases up closed highway exit ramps to escape the water.

“We’re just kind of at God’s mercy right now, so hopefully people that never prayed before this, it might be a good time to start,” Linn County Sheriff Don Zeller said. “We’re going to need a lot of prayers, and people are going to need a lot of patience and understanding.” (more…)

One of the worst ideas I’m aware of is the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life.

This Los Angeles Times story details new efforts to use sensitive radio telescopes to hear alien signals.

This is called SETI—Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

This is a terrible idea.

I don’t want to know about any space beings. It’s bad enough we bring back samples from the moon or wherever else. Someday we are all going to get the spacepox.

I feel any aliens coming here will either enslave us or eat us. Maybe both. It rarely went well when civilizations met for the first time in Earth history. At best, aliens will transmit a horrible disease.  

The thought of aliens is terrifying. People would lose their minds if the mother ship landed in Red Square or the Bronx or anywhere. People lose their minds over far less. 

I get upset when I think of the records on the Voyager spaceprobes that give our location. Why tell our potential alien masters where we are?  

I know we can’t do anything about the radio and television signals transmitting our location for the whole galaxy to hear. But we can at least put our heads in the sand about whatever beings that mercifully have not found us yet.

Or are not yet hungry enough or in need of all our water to come to Earth.

• Bill O’Reilly has a new book cooking. The book is some sort of memoir entitled - A Bold, Fresh Piece of Humanity. Yeah, right.
• Sweet Katie Couric (not really a journalist in my opinion) scolded to one “commentator” when he said that it was hard to be objective about Obama. She stated that was his job. Unfortunately, like most of our society is appears that Ms. Couric didn’t read the rest of the transcript or bother to pull any of his video.

We have had a lot of violent weather this summer. Tornadoes are usually a phenomenon of spring but not this year. Last night a tornado torn through a boy scout camp killing four.

Four Boy Scouts were killed when a tornado tore through a camp in the remote hills of western Iowa, Gov. Chet Culver told TODAY on Thursday.

The twister late Wednesday set off a frantic search to reach others in the piles of debris and downed trees. At least 48 people were injured.

Culver described the scene at the site as “horrific.”

“All four of the young men who were killed were Scouts,” he said. “The devastation was massive through the campgrounds.”

Thomas White, a Scout supervisor, said he dug through the wreckage of a collapsed fireplace to reach victims in a building where many Scouts sought shelter. (more…)
