What’s Going On: Evening News Roundup

Here’s the Wednesday night news roundup:

  • Alaska’s attorney general was appointed by vice presidential hopeful, Sarah Palin. This trooper scandal continues to get more and more complex.
  • I’m not sure why, but it appears that in order to run for major political office you have to cut corners. Every candidate in the presidential race has bent the truth somewhat. Senator John McCain has completely broken it.
  • It appears that someone broke into Governor Sarah Palin’s Yahoo! email account. You know, I like good investigative journalism as much, or more, than the next guy but this is going too far. It is simply wrong in my opinion. Let’s stick to the facts and the issues.
  • Senators Barbara Boxer (Democrat — California), Debbie Stabenow (Democrat — Michigan) and Bob Melendez (Democrat — New Jersey) present the case that McCain’s policies are out of touch.

  • Several senators disagree with the FBI’s conclusion that Bruce Ivins was behind the anthrax attacks of 2001.
  • Hillary Clinton canceled an appearance at a rally scheduled for next week in New York. Wisely, she seems to want to have nothing to do with being on the same stage as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Senator Clinton understands the political games that are being played and has made an extremely smart move. There is no upside for Senator Clinton and, in fact, there’s nothing but downside in being on the same stage as Palin.
  • Florida investigators found that state regulators looked the other way as rogue mortgage brokers swindled Floridians out of millions of dollars. Now, Governor Charlie Crist wants to clean up the corruption. Isn’t that a little like closing the barn door after the horses and chickens and pigs have left. (Yep, I said, “pigs.”)
  • Yemen? An explosion in Yemen? Isn’t that how this whole thing started with the bombing of USS Cole in Yemen? Why do we have an embassy in Yemen?
  • The market took another beating today. Down over 400 points.
