Countdown: McCain And Deregulation

Senator John McCain is finding it harder and harder to run away from his record. He wrote an article in the September/October issue of Contingencies (a journal I had never heard of) in which he stated:

“Opening up the healthcare insurance market to more rigorous, nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.”

I guess it never occurred to McCain that healthcare does not respond to the supply and demand theory that drives most of the market. Nobody goes to a doctor because they seek the cheapest medical treatment. As a matter of fact, people will frequently drive for miles out of their way, to see a physician who they believe is the “best.”

More importantly, this short excerpt shows McCain’s true tendencies when faced with a problem: Don’t analyze the problem; Deregulate it.

  1. Also, look at what happened with banking. We don’t want our healthcare system to tank like our banking industry has. And state-based regulation hasn’t been the issue for conservatives, it’s the federal-level regulations that they’ve tried to erase, in an effort to give back power to the states — precisely what he’s criticizing.

you are exactly right. This is a bone-headed idea that was dreamed up by some folks who are rich and can by-pass the normal healthcare that you and I have to live with.

    Thanks for your comments.

  3. Have you ever heard of McCain Feingold?

I wish that McCain was the King of Deregulation.

Anyway, the health care issue is a non sequiter given the clip that you ran.

Is KO aware that the Dems have a majority in the House. I don’t expect Pelosi to pull Republican votes but can she at least keep her own party in line?

Yep, heard of Feingold-McCain. In 26 years, I’m sure that you have something else to point to.

    Thanks, I’ll fix the clip.

I think that a majority of the Dems did for the bailout, didn’t they? it was the Republicans that didn’t deliver. Now, to be fair neither side really wants to swallow this poison pill.

    Thanks for your comments.
