Muslims kicked off plane

I was going to title this post “Snakes on a Plane,” but no one saw that movie so I decided against that.

You know this story. Two families are getting on a plane and discussing where the safest place to sit might be. They are overheard and reported to authorities. They are Muslim. They are summarily taken off the plane and interviewed by the FBI The FBI deems them safe, but AirTran will not let them back on the airplane. As a matter of fact, AirTran refuses to let them take any plane, anywhere.

So, we have the rights of an airline pitted against the rights of these American citizens.

From CNN: AirTran Airways apologized Friday to members of a Muslim family for kicking them off a plane and refusing to rebook them despite requests from FBI agents who had cleared them of wrongdoing.

The families of Atif Irfan, a tax attorney, and his brother Kashif Irfan, an anesthesiologist, were removed from a flight in Washington before takeoff Thursday after a passenger reported hearing Atif Irfan’s wife say something suspicious.

The FBI interviewed the family and cleared them of wrongdoing.

“We regret that the issue escalated to the heightened security level it did,” AirTran said in a statement Friday afternoon. “But we trust everyone understands that the security and the safety of our passengers is paramount.” Read the full statement (more from CNN).

The Muslims should have an equivalent to our Pope; a man who could speak for all Islam.
This non-existent man could speak out against the terrorists, even root them out and "turn them in ".
Of course this will never happen... Thus Islam is NOT a religion of peace, but one of hatred and ignorance...That, evidently is the way they want it...
Sooner or later we will have to face them...

A simle google search shows doezens ANS dozens of terror attacks carried out by... get ready chris... WHITE PEOPLE!!! Were you born with your head up your backside? Haven't you ever heard of the IRA? Well of course not, guy who quotes the friggin' Free Republic website!
Since you strike me as rather intellectually lazy, let me include a big ol' list for ya: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_Provisional_IRA_Actions . Not a single Muslim was involved in a single one of the listed atrocities.

And "Don't lump McVeigh in with these terrorists"?!?! Why?! Perhaps the dead babies pulled from the rubble that day didn't really count as victims of terrorists because the terrorists were white? Besides, you can lump hundreds of millions of peaceful practitioners of Islam in with a few nutcases, why doesn't McVeigh fit the bill?

I want you to explain your logic, because I, A WHITE OKLAHOMAN IN OKC THE DAY THE MURRAH BUILDING WAS BLOWN UP, wants to know why McVeigh isn't the same kind of evil as those who flew planes into buildings. Evil knows know skin color, nor does ignorance (apparently).

    I did say that
"Of course that the air-trans refused to take them even after the FBI cleared them was quite lame"

The benefit of doubt should go the airlines...One thing in the favor of airlines is surely that this wasn't the first time they were flying a muslim family I am sure so their was no intentional profiling of any kind.

I can appreciate all the comments that show reason, moderation, and rationality, including the one that said that Muslims should be cautious of what they say (not because they deserve to be held in suspicion, but only because that's a reality that they need to face).

I also think its better to be safe than sorry so I can't say the report shouldn't have been taken seriously.

The airlines acted correctly at first but then may have gone too far after the FBI cleared the family.

We need to show the world that we are a cautious society, but that we will be quick to clear and remove stigma if it is placed mistakenly (i.e. we need to be balanced).

I believe a very small mistake was made first by the family and a larger one by the airline, but let's move on here.

WHAT DOES BOTHER ME, HOWEVER, is when idiots like Chris Ludlow get on these forums with their evil hidden agendas, guised by the pretense of an uneducated person who uses vulgarity, trying to find any possible way to wrap this together with his anti-Islamic sentiment. This has nothing to do with your unjustified and politically charged neo-con hate of Islam and Muslims. Stop spreading ridiculous lies like "Muslims hate and want to kill all Christians and Jews." First of all, Muslims have lived for hundreds of years in peace with Christians and Jews. Secondly, even those evil terrorists who claim to be Muslim and have hijacked the faith, even they will never say something like "kill the Christians and Jews", this is all a neoconservative dogma trying to brainwash us into thinking that these evil terrorists hate us because of our "freedoms". As evil as they are, and as much as they don't represent Muslims in general because of their methods, even they have their motives that are political and reactive to other events in the world. Even the worst terrorist, Bin Laden, said in all his videos 'get out of our lands'. So although he is evil because of HOW he chooses to react to his grievances, and 99% of the Muslims who suffer from those occupations in their lands will not agree with the methods Bin Laden and his followers resort to, this doesn't mean that we should paint him, his evil followers AND 1.5 billion Muslims of the world into a false depiction of all hating us and wanting to kill us because they hate freedom.

Not all of them want to kill us, not all of them hate us, and even the ones who do want to kill us and hate us, they do it for their own retarded political reasons, not because of freedom itself or because we are Christians and Jews.

Harmless conversation? No way. The last thing people should be discussing is the safest place to sit on a plane in the event of a crash, ESPECIALLY muslims. Yes, they were innocent, but muslims must take some responsibility for themselves as well given the times - don't say stupid things, stupid things won't happen to you. It's that simple.

Some of the posters here are no better than the Air Tran airlines, particularly the compaining passenger, with their use of all caps, stupidity, ignorance, and profanity.
The FBI agents showed more class and the all important knowledge of people...
They are indeed well trained, the airline and many posters here are not...
On the surface, I agree with the airline, they probably did the right thing. But they were wrong in not listening to the FBI men..
This ,"not listening", is a national problem.....
The "melting pot", what a farce !; this hardly exists...its a myth for those of distinct features...

    All terrorists are Muslims? Really?
Because I feel like the Oklahoma bombings weren't carried out by Muslims. Neither was the Anthrax scare. Or the Columbine shootings. Or the Virginia tech shootings. Or the Unibomber activities.
Thanks for enlightening us on your ignorance though, CarolO.

Also, there are Muslims who aren't Arab or Middle Eastern. So I guess you should be scared of Black people again, and Asians, and *gasp* White people as well! Might as well be scared of everyone.

And for those of you who think that Muslims aren't Americans or have no loyalties to this great nations, you're sorely mistaken.

My husband is Muslim born in Texas with parents from California. So when you tell him to go back to his country, he's already here. Thanks for the warm welcome, though. Really.

His brother who is also a Muslim and is stationed out of Fort Bragg, NC as a proud member of the Army thanks you as well from his station in Iraq, serving the United States.

WOW!!!!! I just read the story and all the blogs on here. Yes AirTran should have offered to fly these folks for free after they were cleared by the FBI. As for the person that reported the conversation, she did the right thing. I would have done the same thing if I had heard only parts of the conversation. She obviously had no idea that they were actually American citizens. The question is, who else was in earshot of that conversation and was too scared to say anything. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but most of the terrorists in the last decade or so have been Muslim, so I say better safe than sorry. Personally I believe that ALL religions have extremists in one way or another and if you go back through your world history most wars were fought because of religion. So who's to say whose right or wrong?
GOOD PEOPLE DO GOOD THINGS----BAD PEOPLE DO BAD THINGS!!!
    Its that simple folks.
To this family that got booted off the plane, I hope you all have a wonderful vacation. Being white & Native American hope one day ignorance will disappear from society.

The reports we hear over and over again in the media has driven home the message loud and clear that muslims are capable of unspeakable acts of violence, that there are radicals in hiding all over the world who wish to kill us all, and that they would, more than likely, happily commit suicide in doing so. The suicide bombing thing! That, is a concept we westerners find shocking and will probably never come to understand. And any culture that embraces such acts will always be viewed by western cultures as being barbaric and backwards.
Look, the rhetoric we’re inundated with has instilled a unique mass fear amongst westerners towards all arabs. Given the circumstances it’s a wonder that incidents such as this are not the norm.

If you are trying to be pro-active against terrorism you are filled with hatred. If you arent you are negligent.. this is what opinions make out of air-trans action.. This country has seen attack using planes.. Now whats wrong in profiling individuals on suspicion... I think muslims should also take this in the right spirit.. Since although all muslims are not terrorists, most recent attacks have muslims invovled, whether its the 9/11 in US, 26/11 in mumbai, london or Spain bombings....Of course that the air-trans refused to take them even after the FBI cleared them was quite lame...

Rather than blame the air-line, getting in their shoes would provide a better perspective of apprehensions....some have

Hey Sandy, your views are valid and admirable, and I essentially agree with you, but I think you'd have more impact if you invested in a spell checker. It's a bit iffy to accuse us of being uneducated when you open your response with "shocked and appauled".

And I'm afraid I'm at a loss to interpret your last two sentences--we're all illegal immigrants for being judgmental? None of the involved parties in this incident were immigrants--these were American Muslim families. And they weren't singled out for being Muslim either--they were singled out for having an inappropriate conversation on an airplane, and if you and your tiny white sister had the same conversation under similar circumstances, you'd be behaving inappropriately as well.

AirTran owed these individuals, who caused considerable disruption, inconvenience, and cost to a great deal of people, absolutely nothing from a legal standpoint. We can argue whether they should've offered these families compensation in a more timely fashion out of courtesy and good customer service principles, but ultimately, they have the right to refuse service to anyone whom they believe is acting inappropriately on their property.

I wish this unfortunate incident hadn't happened, but frankly, I'd prefer the airlines act on the side of caution when it comes to the safety of their passengers, and I think these people shouldn't have discussed such volatile concerns in front of other passengers. Perhaps this incident will cause others to think twice about what they choose to say on future flights.

As far as your Native American comment goes, I don't know where the hell that one came from. I guess I know what you were getting at to a certain extent, but since that old saw is about three centuries old now, I really don't think it applies here. If you're going to start ranting about every injustice throughout antiquity to prove that AirTran is a racist company, then you're going to get labeled a loony. Let's stick to the here and now, ok?

I am shocked and appauled. My sister and I have this same conversation everytime we fly to see which one of us remember the safest place. She flies a plane, I hate flying. We are small and white but we could be terrorists, just like anyone else in this world. color isn't a factor for God's sake. This family was embarrased and they took a report from young girls without thought. To me this is flat racisist. This family was a customer also and with far more tickets than 2 girls and yes, they too, should have been questioned. This was wrong and handled wrong. They were cleared and still not allowed to go on a plane=racist. These give to our and their country with good jobs, they help people. How do you think this affects the children. Ya all can sit there with your paranoid personalities and judge what you know nothing about. People like you are the very reason Americans have lost Constitutional Rights and the Bill of Rights=no common sense. You are paranoid and uneducated. I can't believe I am reading this from Americans that live in a melting pot. You all are illegal immigrants if you want to be so judgemental. If you don't believe it, ask a native american.

As an Oklahoman who was in OKC the day the Murrah Building was bombed by white Americans, I want to apologize for the idiots on this board insisting anyone appearing Muslim isn't allowed to speak of anything but puppies and sunshine in the vicinity of an airport without expecting to be treated as terrorists.

ALL major religions are based on the HUMAN concepts of love and respect for others. As Fred Phelps spew of hatred does NOT represent the ideals of all Christians (ahem, the vast majority of Christians), neither do the hateful ideals expounded by by some extremist Muslims (and repeated by ignorant Westerners) represent the majority of the Islamic faith.

Ignorant Christians (just the ignorant ones - for all the rest, please ignore as you understand this already), please think of your own religion... how there are Catholics, Baptists, Mormons, Protestants, etc. all under the Christian umbrella. Imagine this... the same is true for Muslims! There are crazy extremists in all walks of life, not just the brown ones!

I request the Muslim family to file a case and squeeze a million dollar for each of your family member for trauma caused.

Also ask the airlines to put the whole crew on retraining and kick off the pilot.

    Donate the money to

Families of US soldiers killed in action in Iraq or Afghanistan

FBI as they helped you to clear the security and approach airlines for further training

TSA to establish a special training cell for handling such sensitive cases.

In this economic melt down taking approx 10 million dollars for the company should be good enough.

Donot accept whatever they are offering but take them for a long ride till the whole company is on its knees.

Make an example out of them and set an example for others that you donated the money for USA which will improve image of your religion too.

First of all the news itself is shocking but to add on comments of (some of the ) general US citizens are awful.
    1. I have a brown skin and i donot belong to middle east.
    2. I am not a muslim.
    3. I do not dress like native americans do!!
    4. I fly atleast 5-6 times a year.
    5. I am not even a US citizen but a scientist invited by US univ.

Does this mean i should be prepared to be frisked at every airport? I should be expected to be kicked off the plane if some so called kid of a European migrant (read white) thought I am a terrorist or not dressed up like her.

All terrorists are not muslims. Wake up, have you heard about IRA, LTTE, Maoists, ETA and so on.

I think the problem is with the US media and general education system of USA. Compare the news coverage of CNN and BBC and you will understand what I mean.

And pardon me, for not recognising your so called US English accent eventhough I spent most of my life in Cambridge (UK). Go out of your dungens to see the world and place yourself. Does that mean i should be kicked off for not understanding your awsome kwality axcent.

Please accept the differences and respect them. It took almost 150 years for US to give right to vote to women, 200 years to accept Blacks and another 200+ years to recognise other religions in US.

Please for goodness sake remove hatred from your heart. It is land of opportunities. Avail them before people from all over the world snatch them away from you.

First of all the news itself is shocking but to add on comments of (some of the ) general US citizens are awful.
    1. I have a brown skin and i donot belong to middle east.
    2. I am not a muslim.
    3. I do not dress like native americans do!!

I hope they sue that stupid airline and milk them for millions.

It is the pathetic uneducated people of America who continue to embarrass our country to the rest of the world. (Always remember that 50% of all people are below average. Sadly, America seems to be beating that average handily)

I have commented on the safety of seating areas on a plane for years. Never had an issue. Now someone with a head scarf and they are a suicide bomber. Did these people go through the same TSA security checkpoints as all others? Of course.

    Just patently pathetic.

Reminds me of the idiots in Lubbock Texas airport who ripped a woman's nipple rings out for security reasons. The stupidity never ends.

It is so sad to see our country go from a world leader with the best educated people to a world follower with idiots holding the keys to the gate.

Oh, and I am not Muslim.

On a separate note, I did witness the interviews with the family, and I was amused to notice that the women involved, who were apparently responsible for the majority of the controversial comments, were peering meekly from their khimārs in obedient silence as their husbands addressed the press. Honestly, I found that to be the only infuriating aspect of this story--much was made of the professions (lawyer, doctor) of the men, while the women were presented as accessories.

I find it breathtakingly hypocritical of these men to shame AirTran for being politically-incorrect, while seeming to adhere to archaic Islamic traditions of "women as property". If they want to perpetuate less resentful views towards their faith among Westerners, they'd go a long way by practicing its tenets in a more modern, enlightened context. The hijab is the equivalent of maintaining a Mennenite lifestyle in an modern, urban setting. No wonder non-Muslim people are suspicious of them--they're stuck in the Dark Ages..

It's time to catch up to the Cenozoic era, guys--it's the men who carry the shame of your culture, not the women. How about you cover your faces and let your wives and daughters speak for a change. Maybe then the era of terrorism and fighting might finally end.

Get the hell out of my country?? excuse me? This is my country too. I am a Muslim but I am also an American, where do you want me to go?? If this country is only supposed to be for one ethnic group, then all of us Italians, Irish, Jews, Chinese, Indians, Koreans, Mexicans etc needs to leave on a boat and that includes you "God fearing" white Christian people as well because this land was really owned and inherited by the native indians who if I recall from my history class, we once were a victim of hate and discrimination as well!

Now a days you have to very careful what you say and that is a fact.
The thing I don't understand is why did everyone believe a child and what she said. That made no sense to me at all. Children always make big things out of nothing and that is a fact.
I feel very badly for the families that this happened to very badly. I know what it feels like to singled out and look at as though I have two (2) noses and three (3) ears because I live in Hialeah, Fl and I don't speak Spanish. I am an American and I am not welcomed in this part of Florida and that is a fact.

Well, as a minority my self I can only say...

First...the airline was wrong for not re-booking them after the FBI had cleared them, period.

Second... not mad at all at the person that initially reported them, if someone says something suspicious on my plane I hope another person steps up and makes it known, I'd much rather be wrong than be plummeting to earth for about 40 seconds knowing the end is coming at about 400 mph!!!!

Third: If you already know people are paranoid and you "fit the bill" then do yourself a favor and try not say things that attract attention on a plane... yes everyone is entitled to say what they want, however... that is the price we all pay when someone in our ethnic group does something stupid and infamous.

Fourth: It would not hurt to smile from time to time, especially when on national TV...doesn't help any when you appear on CNN.com looking like 2 of the FBI's 10 most wanted!!!

Its a mad mad world, we made it what it is and we all have to live with the consequences...period.!

What a set up! A bunch of middle easterners get on a plane and say certain things to be overheard. They get bounced off the plane and sue the airline for racial profiling. It's all a setup.

I can say that I'm unable to form an educated opinion about this incident because I didn't witness the events as they transpired. I imagine that the actions of both the family and AirTran have been embellished and distorted by the media, as well as spokespersons from both sides of the story.

If the family members were discussing such a volatile topic on a plane departing from a Washington D.C. airport, of all places, that was inappropriate and reckless. Even if the FBI had cleared them, I don't think AirTran could possibly return these passengers to their scheduled flight without creating undue anxiety among the existing passengers. Imagine the scene that would've transpired when those passengers reboarded--it would've arguably escalated to hysteria.

If AirTran didn't give the family a reasonable offer to accommodate their travel plans, that wasn't good business on their part, but honestly, they owed the family nothing from a legal perspective. This family made some choices that cost the airline and hundreds of passengers significant inconvenience. The airline had no choice but to act on the concerns of the passengers who complained.

As usual, people are distorting this incident out of context and manipulating it to conform to their own political issues and causes. If one imagines the events from the perspective of a passenger on that plane, it seems reasonable to assume that the events couldn't have transpired any other way, irrespective of the race, creed, or motivation of all involved parties.

Reading this blog goves me both hope and dispair. Some of the comments are very thoughtful an dinsightful then others are anything but. Owen clearly knows very little about world history (making him the typical xenophobic American I guess - go look the word up Owen) and Miguel should be ashamed of himself. I strongly suspect your parents entered our country illegally and have been the subject of discrimination because of their appearance. It is funny how hiding behind a computer gives cowards a false since of courage allowing them to be so thoughless and stupid.

I was looking at Phil Zerns comment. With all due respect it is our country.

Also this is the kind of thing that went on in world war 2 with american's of italian, german, and japaneese decent. To take the actions of a few muslims like .1%, and apply those actions, etc to the other 99.9% is just wrong. I have no problem being around people that are different than me, etc.

People are just so paranoid about everything now days. Really dumb. As for the airline doing what it did. If that was done to me, I can tell you I would have raised a big stink, and not flown that airline again, and told others about how they treat customers.

I happen to be gay, and have a partner, and I know first hand what people of muslim decent, faith , etc go thru with discrimination, and all that. Given it's treatment of these people I will not fly on this carrier.

The person who reported the "questionable conversation" was a racist. if the person who made the comments about the safest place to sit on an airplane were white, it would have never been reported. You cannot scrutinize a whole nationality/religious group based on the actions of a few. This family was only trying to go on vacation and were clearly discriminated against by the other passenger based on their nationality. Not all muslim are going to fly a plane into a building. Americans need to wake up and get over their insecurities about religions and people they are not familiar with.....

A person once said that it is not good to be color blind, because at end of the day you will still be blind. I am glad that the passengers were cautious and alert. The staff of AirTran did their job appropriately by removing them from the plane to be screened. Up until this point the procedure is appropriate. But why would AirTran refuse to let this family aboard after our own government officials, FBI, cleared them of any terrorist activity. Where is the sense in refusing service to this family. Doesn't the airline also realize what affect this incident will have on the three children as well. Imagine being a young child going on a vacation and you and your family gets kicked of a plane for being a muslim. I hope the kids dont take this incident the wrong way, because the last thing we need in this world is more hatred. As far as AirTran's punishment, they should let this family fly free for life whenever they want and whereever they want. Let this be a lesson to all the airlines. Next time use some common sense.

If I, being white, lived in a muslim country...and was part of a culture that terrorized innocent muslims (stay with me here) by flying planes into high rise buidlings, and generally just blowing places up where innocents are.....would it not be OK for muslims to fear a suspicious comment I might say?

To the muslim family I say tough. Accept it for the reality it is and leave it at that. OTHERWISE...take a stand and speak out against the cowardly, insane, and indefenseable actions of radical islamic jackasses. Again, not all muslims are terrorist...but most all terrorists seem to be muslim.

If I get on a plane and am drunk or if I make remarks not suitable for airline travel, I too would get kicked off the plane. My daughter in law was the Flight Attendant on this plane and more was said by this family than the press is reporting. There were witnesses let's not forget. The also were saying they did not know each other, which also was not reported.

Air Tran owed them no apology for putting peoples safety first. Let's not forget, folks, that not all Muslim are terrorists but all terrorists are Muslim.

Let's assume for a minute that these folks actually were Muslim terrorists, and they were smart enough to know that if they engaged in a conversation that would imply their intentions that concerned, alert Americans would assume that, if they really were terrorists they wouldn't announce their intentions. Then they and the other 95 passengers on that airplane take off and are subsequently blown out of the sky by a bomb that was planted by these "good American Muslims." The rest of you who are bashing the person who reported the conversation and the airline who treated that report seriously would today be bashing the same airline for doing nothing to prevent another attack on innocent Americans. Those of you who lost loved ones on the plane would be preparing to sue Air Tran for everything they have because they failed to take appropriate steps to prevent this tragedy. The blogs and comments would be decidely opposed to the rights of Muslim Americans to live without suspicion in this country. I, for one, will never forget what Muslims did, in the name of their god, to our innocent Americans on 9/11, and if that means that any and all Muslims who appear to be suspicious or conduct suspicious conversations need to be treated as a potential threat then so be it. And here's an idea for all Muslims: if you don't like being looked at suspiciously, or treated like a potential threat, get the hell out of my country. Until I take my last breath, I will always be on alert for anyone who wants to do harm to me, my family, or my country.

The AirTran apology (PDF file on CNN website) was pawltry and inadequate). It appears that this family not only did nothing wrong, but AirTran handled the situation poorly (they did not place the family back on the plane after they were cleared by the FBI; by the way I am a Catholic, if that matters). I will not use AirTran unless they offer an adequate public apology to this family.

Wow! thrilled to read this Bill guy's comments, "Who cares about these people. Too bad, so sad!", I am going back in the history and it reminds me of a certain hate mongers umm I think they were called Nazis? and that's exactly what they used to think about another minority based on their religious affiliation....interesting!

I think the low IQ trailer trash passengers who reported this Muslim family as suspicious should have been questioned to find out exactly why they reported them. It baffles me that so much time and resources were wasted to investigate a harmless comment when these agencies should have been watching out for real bad guys! So if someone was really thinking about harming an airplane, what the heck does it matter where they themselves are sitting? It is all one plane, there is no SAFE seat per say.... .. Air tran and its passengers must be from hicksville Alabama....with an IQ that matches Minnesota's temps in January!

Wow, such ignorance. The business has the right to refuse your business so get over it. You have no rights what so ever to fly, only to travel unhendered unless I missed something in school. Yes I have discussed the safest place on a plane however not while boarding the aircraft. So who's fault was that, the reportees of the conversation? Each culture has to be careful what they say or do so as not to offend the other including white people.

It's always someone else's fault, not what I said or what I did. You would think with the education level of these two they would have the common sense of where to discuss this type of topic.

All I have heard is we (Muslim community) condem the attacks but last I check it is the numerous nations fighting the battle on your countries home front not you.

Reference the U.S. being a melting pot is entirely correct but my opinion is that that term is outdated. Many have died for this country whether Citizen or not. I would like to think those that did considered themselves an American not Arab-American, Mexican-American or the endless others terms. Either you are or aren't period.

Who cares about these people. Too bad, so sad! When they fly planes into buildings or blow themselves up and we get upset, the first thing they do is say we don't understand them. Then the dumb ass libs/dems wet their pants and say we should have a muslim appreciation day or something. There is no such thing as a muslim or arab American as they have no loyalties to this great nation, only to a dying religion that cvan't reconsile itself with the modern world. Be cautious of those things that call themselves muslims.

Rob, MWW and Leslie, you are completely off base and should not be allowed near a computer again until you have, I don't know, passed an IQ test or something. Brian, you get a reprieve because you recognized that Airtran screwed up, however, haven't you talked about where the safest place in the plane is? I know I have, if the tail breaks off, is it safer in the tail section? The wings hold fuel, so are they less safe? Is it because we are not muslim that we can get away with that conversation? All American citizens, regardless of religion or IQ (even you Rob), should have the same rights and be treated the same. The airline should be ashamed of themselves, I for one will not be traveling on AirTran now, thats another right we all have, the right to vote with our dollars.

after the agents cleared them, the airline should have rebooked them.
at the same time, this is still a free society and if a business refuses its services to a group of people for whatever reason, take your business elsewhere. tell your friends to do the same. if you want businesses to change, take your money to those who will accept it. money talks.

and to the point of this story, i don't care what you look like, some things should not be talked about around planes simply to avoid stupid stuff like this. don't talk about bombs, crashes, safety, etc. someone may panic creating a dangerous situation where there was none. maybe you are talking about planes being safer than cars, but someone has a fear of flying and freaks out on the plane because they overheard you.

I agree with Hareega. The person who reported this harmless conversation should be held responsible as well. They should be held as a material witness since they reported they heard an incriminating conversation. Every time a person reports someone, then they should be thoroughly questioned as well, even if they miss the flight.

AirTran over reacted... it should have rebooked the family and sent them on their way. The apology from AirTran is not good enough. It does not apologize to the family... they should directly apologize to the family ... and take steps so this does not happen. I personally will not fly AirTran.

I'm very thankful for the FBI agents and all they did to get the family to their final destination. The individuals that complained did the right thing, now days we do need to be vigilant.

  • It's very simple, some low-life passenger did not approve of what the wife was wearing, so he liked to give this Muslim family a hard time and claimed that they were suspicious. Airlines have to respond to any passenger who reports anything suspcious, but that passenger who said he heard something suspicious should be QUESTIONNED about what was suspicous about. People should be accounted for anything they say.

Two months ago a white passenger was caught running naked in the plane, should I worry about white passengers running naked in planes now? A white scientists had spread anthrax that affected dozens of people and was planning on more evil doing using science as a tool, should I become scared of white scientists now?

I want to know when our society will TRULY live up to the fact that we are the 'melting pot'. It bothers me that our "rich" culture is busy bringing about democracy in other parts of the world and yet there is still SO much prejudicial/racial accounts domestically. Clearly there is outrage in this situation and it is pointed at the narrow-mindness of our fellow citizens.

To the comment above, there is no justification to treating someone differently because they dress differently, have an accent, or whatever the case maybe. Nor should the individual(s) walk around on eggshells with the perception that they will be targeted based on outward appearance. I mean we just recently received the first black-American president of the USA. He has not even been sworn in yet and you are talking about people that "do not look like us".

People need to wake up and not allow ignorance to rule their emotions and thought process. It never works and never has. Love overcomes everything. Let the narrow-minded behavior end and peace begin :)

Anyone who wears clothing to set themselves apart from others, i.e. muslim, priests, nuns, Mormans, the kids who wear goth clothing etc. should be prepared to be scrutinized by others, it just happens. In these times of uncertainty we are wary of anyone who doesn't "look like us". I think the airlines did what they were supposed to do.

    Where's the outrage??

Why should there be any outrage??

The reports we hear over and over again in the media has driven home the message loud and clear that muslims are capable of unspeakable acts of violence, that there are radicals in hiding all over the world who wish to kill us all, and that they would, more than likely, happily commit suicide in doing so. The suicide bombing thing! That, is a concept we westerners find shocking and will probably never come to understand. And any culture that embraces such acts will always be viewed by western cultures as being barbaric and backwards.
Look, the rhetoric we're inundated with has instilled a unique mass fear amongst westerners towards all arabs. Given the circumstances it's a wonder that incidents such as this are not the norm.
