Wednesday Evening News Roundup
- Hillary Clinton has been confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of State. The final vote was 94-2. Senator David Vitter, the one that’s been linked to prostitution rings in two cities, and Senator Jim DeMint (Republican from South Carolina) were the only two that opposed Senator Clinton. In a related story, Eric Holder, Obama’s nominee for Attorney General, is being held up by Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Remember that Senator Cornyn owes most of his political career to George W. Bush.
- Senator Ted Kennedy was released from the hospital today. Seizures can be very difficult to control. I wish him well.
- There’s been a 120-day freeze on all military trials associated with 9/11. President Barack Obama instructed Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to put a hold on the 21 cases currently before military tribunals.
- For the first time since 1931, GM is not the world’s largest automaker. Toyota sold more cars worldwide in 2008 than GM. Are you surprised? I guess this is the union’s fault, also.
- The stock market rebounded today. Financial stocks seem to have rebounded from yesterday. Because of Chief Justice John Roberts‘ mix up yesterday with the oath of office, President Barack Obama has re-taken the oath today. Sounds silly but there are still some conservatives that don’t believe that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. BTW, Hillary Clinton was sworn in as Secretary of State, today.
- Ann Dixon Cooper may have been the happiest person in the world yesterday. She is the 107-year-old lady that Barack Obama talked about in his acceptance speech. Although she did not make it to the inauguration (she is 107 years old!!), she did watch it on television yesterday. She has truly a remarkable story.
- There is a cool photo mosaic of President Barack Obama as he takes the oath of office. The photo is a collage of hundreds of photos that were taken during the migration.
I really love the cartoon below.
