David Beckham and David Garnett

I’m not sure why this is so popular, but it is one of the videos that have blown up over the last couple of days. What I learned from this video is that David Garnett, who is a great basketball player, really can’t kick a soccer ball. David Beckham, one of the most celebrated soccer stars of the last 15 years, can kick a soccer ball. That’s what I learned. What did you learn?

Art Blakely was more than a great drummer. He was where many great jazz musicians got their start. He would season them. This is a 1961 recording of Dat Dare by Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers.

Joe the Plumber wants to shoot someone in Congress

Like a bad penny, he just keeps showing up. Isn’t his 15 minutes of fame over yet?

From TP:

On Wednesday, Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher said that if he were in Congress, he would “probably be in jail” because he’d be charged with “slapping some member.” He added, “And that’s not [bull] either.” ThinkProgress asked Joe at CPAC yesterday which members he would most like to slap. “Pretty much anybody that’s stood there and said anything bad about our troops, pretty much anybody who sat there and talked treasonous talk about America,” Joe said. He then implied that some members of Congress should be shot:

Back in the day, really, when people would talk about our military in a poor way, somebody would shoot ‘em. And there’d be nothing said about that, because they knew it was wrong. You don’t talk about our troops. You support our troops. Especially when our congressmen and senators sit there and say bad things in an ongoing conflict.

Sebelius Accepts HHS Post

Kathleen SebeliusIt has been forever in Obama days (he is moving so fast) since Tom Daschle withdrew from consideration as Chief of Health and Human Services. There were rumors about Howard Dean, who is a physician, stepping in. There were also rumors about Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

More from WaPo:

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius accepted President Obama’s nomination to become Health and Human Services Secretary this afternoon, according to administration officials. Sebelius will replace former senator Thomas A. Daschle, who withdrew from consideration last month.

“This evening, the President asked Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to serve as his Secretary of Health and Human Services, and she accepted,” one administration official said. “The President will formally announce the nomination on Monday afternoon at the White House.”

What is Twitter?

I found this segment on CNN. It is made for my mother who asked me just the other day, “What is Twitter?” When you do news all day long, sooner or later you get to stories like this one.

Jindal is digging the hole deeper

I found a story on DK the night of Governor Bobby Jindal’s Republican response that seemed to suggest that Jindal wasn’t in New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The story was picked up by TPMPolitico’s Ben Smith noted the blog chatter and asked the Governor’s office for clarification. Governor Jindal’s office released this response:

It was in the days following the storm. Sheriff Lee was a hero who worked tirelessly to rescue those in danger, and he didn’t take kindly to bureaucrats getting in his way.

Really? Well, this clears up everything. We are sorry for… Wait a minuteWhat?  TPM has the rest of the story and the governor’s office does absolutely nothing to help the governor out of this trap.

From TPM:

Instead, they went back to Smith, now telling him, in Smith’s words, that Jindal “didn’t imply” on Tuesday that the story “took place during the heat of a fight to release rescue boats.” (Take 30 seconds to read Jindal’s actual words, and you’ll see that’s flatly untrue — but no matter.) Rather, Jindal spokeswoman Melissa Sellers told Smith, “It was days later .. Sheriff Lee was on the phone and the governor came down to visit him. It wasn’t that they were standing right down there with the boats.”

Smith added:

She said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, “was doing an interview” about the incident with the boats when the governor described him yelling into the phone. In other words, Jindal only heard from Lee later that this had happened. He didn’t actually see it happening and played no role in it himself. We posted a few hours ago, noting that Jindal’s office had admitted the story was false.

But then things got weirder: Jindal’s people went back for yet more.

Smith soon posted an update explaining that he had misunderstood Sellers earlier. According to Teepell, Smith now wrote, rescue efforts were in fact still underway when Jindal met with Lee. And Jindal overheard Lee yelling on the phone to justify a decision he had previously made, not giving an interview about the episode, as Sellers’ earlier version had had it.

In fact, that whole thing about Jindal overhearing Lee giving an interview? It’s now gone from Smith’s post (though, thanks to the dangers of syndication, it remains here) as if Jindal’s office never said it.

There’s more. Amazingly, Sellers then argued to Smith that there is no difference between Jindal’s original story as told Tuesday night, and the one her office finally settled on this afternoon. And even more amazingly, Smith added another update in which he transcribed that argument without comment, as if it were reasonable.

Then the capper: With Jindal’s office now satisfied with the third iteration of its story — a version that clearly acknowledged that the first version, told Tuesday night to millions, was false — Teepell went back to Smith with the following comment:

“This is liberal blogger B.S. The story is clear.”

And Smith, in yet another update, published it.

Good work all round!

Original Superman for sale

SupermanI was never much into comic books, but  I did collect movie posters for a while. I have about 100 or so still folded in a closet somewhere. Even so, I know the value of Action Comics #1. Superman and Lois Lane were first introduced the to public in #1. There is something very special about Superman. As a character he has only one weakness. He does the right thing every time. He was perfect… boring, but perfect.

Only 100 copies of Action #1 were made and 80 copies are known to exist. More than half of those have been restored (which lowers the value). This is an unrestored, good copy. It goes on display/sale today. Hey, does anyone have an extra $400,000 that I can have? I’ll get it back to you in 20 years or so when I sell the comic book. I’m good for it! ;-)

Tom Brady marries

I’m sure that Tom Brady would have married the same woman if he were the back-up quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, but he is not. He is a future Hall of Fame quarterback. If he never plays another down he is in the Hall in this first year of eligibility. Tom married the most highly paid Supermodel in the business – Gisele Bundchen. Sweet. (I hope that he has better luck than Billy Joel did.)

First Lady underscores the importance of the EPA

Many of our government employees have an extremely low morale. It is no wonder after endurring eight years of Bush rule. Michelle Obama went to the Environmental Protection Agency to give them a much needed pep talk.

What’s going on – News Roundup

Friday Morning News Roundup
  • I continue to be amazed at how Senator Ronald Burris has gone from political genius to a national embarrassment. Now it appears that former Governor Rod Blagojevich hired Ronald Burris, II, as senior counsel, for the state’s Housing Authority in mid-September. This worked out very well since the young attorney had just been slapped with a $34,000 tax lien and a mortgage company had foreclosed on his house. I remember the senator saying something about there was no quid pro quo. Maybe I was mistaken.
  • New York Governor David Paterson has changed his top political staff and hopes of changing his fortune.
  • Well, this was a shocker — John McCain, in front of a conservative audience has warned that America could lose the game that it has currently going in Iraq.
  • It appears that President Barack Obama is planning on pulling out all combat troops from Iraq by August of 2010. The big question is what will be the residual force?
  • Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who has opened an exploratory committee looking into her chances at running for governor of Texas, said the strangest thing on CNBC. “Every major tax cut we’ve ever had in history has created more revenue (for the treasury).” This may not be the stupidest thing that has ever been said, but it is stupid nonetheless. Not one of President Bush’s tax cuts increased revenue. As a matter of fact, President Reagan’s tax cuts in 1981 decreased revenues so dramatically he quietly increased taxes in 1982 and again in 1983. I guess when you’re a senator, or a politician for that matter, facts don’t matter.
  • A new Government Accountability Office report reveals that companies that have been banned from doing business with the United States are continuing to do business with the United States.

Tiger’s back

Just when golf was sinking back into the group of sports that are rather boring, Tiger Woods is back.

From CNN:

The baseball player Curt Schilling once said that mystique and aura are dancers at a nightclub. Golf, though, has Tiger Woods, who after an eight-month absence, the longest of his career, radiates those qualities perhaps now more than ever.

The world No. 1 went 3-under for his first two holes since winning the U.S. Open on a broken leg last June, and easily beat an awed and mostly misfiring Brendan Jones 3&2 in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Wednesday.

“I got off to probably an ideal start,” said Woods, who never trailed after seizing the first hole with a birdie and the second with an eagle. “I hit a couple loose irons in the middle part of the round. But other than that, I really hit it pretty good all day.” (more… )

More Jindal critics from the Right

The guys on Fox News look as if someone stole their Rolex. They aren’t happy with Governor Bobby Jindal.

Brooks – Jindal was a disaster

I thought that Jindal was completely out of step with what Republicans could have said. I was very surprised to see that many Republican commentators were very unhappy with Jindal, including David Brooks from the New York Times.

Governor Jindal presents tax cuts as the answer (update)

The best thing about President George W. Bush was that he was a pure red-blooded Republican. He is a conservative’s conservative. He allowed the American people the opportunity to see what the Republican Party truly believed. He was Reagan on steroids. The problem wasn’t just big government. It was government.

This brings me to the new darling of the Republican Party Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. Jindal has an impressive personal story. He went to college at Brown University and was accepted to Harvard medical school but instead went to Yale for law school. He then got a Masters degree in political science. In 1996 he was appointed Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. From then through 2003 he was appointed to multiple different agencies at a state and national level. He lost a bid for governor in 2003. In 2004 he ran for Congress from Louisiana’s first Congressional District. He won this election overwhelmingly. He ran for governor in 2007, again, and won. This brings us to the present.

The reason I mentioned President George W. Bush (in the first paragraph) was that Bobby Jindal’s response (full text) was the typical conservative Republican response. He offered no new ideas (as I expected). He served up a smorgasbord of tax cuts, suggesting we “… create jobs by lowering income taxes for working families… cutting taxes for small businesses… strengthening incentives (tax credits) for businesses to invest in new equipment and hire new workers… and stabilizing homeowners by creating a new tax credit for homebuyers.” Wasn’t this the exact plan that George W. Bush proposed and passed in 2001 or was that his 2003 tax cut plan? This is more of the same.

The Republican hatred of government was on full display. The governor told us a story about Hurricane Katrina, the moral of which was that we don’t need government to help us with anything. (This is kind of surprising since the governor’s mother used to work for the government.) That was a lesson that he and other Republicans learned from Hurricane Katrina. They learned the government just can’t function. I may be wrong but if you’re running an agency in which disaster management expertise is called for from an agency and it is headed by a guy that has no experience in that field, it would seem to me that the agency may not function as well as it should. President Clinton and FEMA evacuated over a million people from Florida ahead of Hurricane Floyd. Now no one is comparing Hurricane Floyd to Hurricane Katrina. What I am saying is that the government can work if you put competent people in charge.

Watch the Republican response:

Finally, I was surprised at how poor the governor’s presentation was. His gestures were wooden and his speech was halting. He never seemed to flow. I can get over the mechanical gestures if he only had something of substance to add to the discussion. Not one new idea. Not one new theme. Not even a direction where we can find an idea. He is simply the latest new, young face that the GOP has thrown in front of the American people.

Update: Could Governor Bobby Jindal have been mistaken about his touching story about the Louisiana Sheriff during Katrina? Did the Governor lie? Could it be that he wasn’t in New Orleans until days after the Hurricane had passed? It sure seems like his story is very similar to President of Jefferson Parish Aaron Broussard’s story that he told on Meet the Press. Then again, I might be mistaken. I’m sure that a Governor wouldn’t go on national TV and make up facts. No way.

Update 2: America loved Obama’s speech!!

Obama’s Non-official State of the Union

President Barack Obama said what he needed to say tonight. He was the president. He was confident, described the problems and gave detailed answers. He was sharp, honest and most importantly, he was upbeat. (Combating one Republican talking point that Obama’s honest assessment of our economic problems were causing a lack of confidence on Wall Street.)

Obama’s State of the Union complete video, please watch (full text):

What’s going on – News Roundup

  • President Barack Obama is giving the State of the Union Address, which is not really a State of the Union. There is a lot of discussion about what he might say. Language Guru George Lakoff has a good post on DK about Obama’s progressive code.
  • Six weeks ago, the smartest guy in Washington DC seemed to be Ronald BurrisThat was then. Now, Burris doesn’t seem so smart. He actually seems kind of stupid since everyone, except the Pope, including Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, has asked him to resign. What a moron!!
  • Congresswoman Hilda Solis has been confirmed by the Senate as the new Labor Secretary.
  • Could the great Arnold Schwarzenegger be considering leaving (Hasta la vista, baby) the Republican party? No way.

  • Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is the latest great hope for the Republican party. I have had a number of Republicans let me know that 2012 Jindal will be smacking down Obama. Jindal is the governor of one of the most backwards states in US. If he can figure out how to get Louisiana out of the mud and on her feet then that would be a feat that the rest of the country should take note of. Governor Jindal will be giving the Repubican response tonight. Look for him to embrace NOT the American people but big business like all of the other Republicans over the last 30 years. He will talk about how Republicans need to come up with new ideas but will not have any to offer. I don’t know this for a fact. I’m just guessing, because this is exactly what Republicans have been saying over the last four years.
  • You know the economy is bad when Mickey Mouse is hurting. Orlando is hurting. Mickey is laying off workers.

A couple of things

  • I haven’t seen Milk yet, but I think that need to. The screenwriter has just won an Oscar.
  • NAACP calls for the cartoonist to be fired. I’m not worried about the cartoonist. Firing a cartoonist really doesn’t help anyone. He/she is low-hanging fruit. I’m thinking that the editor should have to formally and publicly apologize.
  • Some GOP governors aren’t interested in taking the stimulus. They would rather have people out of work. I wonder if they think that those out-of-work folks didn’t vote for them? I just wonder. (BTW, they should do the right thing and give the money to California.)
  • Secretary of Housing Shaun Donovan states that the mortgage help will go to people who have been playing by the rules.
  • Cruz has won an Oscar for best supporting actressHeath Ledger won best supporting actor for his role as the Joker in Batman. I think that I may be the only person in the world who didn’t think that Ledger was all that and a bag of chips. I think that Jack Nicholson was much better.
  • Former Bush officials are having a tough time finding work.

The Guys from Red State Update have a couple of words about Bristol Palin and teenage girls to throw in here.
