The Errington Thompson 3-28-09

Hey, Aaron has his computer back and running. We are happy for him.

  • Regulators thought that it would be safe for coal companies to dump slurry into mines. So who was surprised that this really wasn’t good for anyone? The stuff leaked into the water supply. There was an increase in renal failure and cancers in the area.Who’s surprised?  How often do we need to do this to learn from this stuff?
  • GAO found that labor Department was not enforcing Labor laws. No duh. Government workers posing as low wage workers called the Labor Department.
  • Senator Byron Dorgan spoke out against the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act from back in 1999.
  • What do former Governor Elliot Spitzer and baseball great A-rod have in common?  They both used the same escort service!!! Sweet.
  • Amanda Terkel, from Think Progress, gets stalked by an O’Reilly producer. Think Progress and progressives fight back.
  • Stephen Colbert wins a on-line contest to name the next NASA space station.

Rick Newman, the business editor of US News and World Report, is back on the show.  GM gets a quality award.  AIG CEO went to Congress to get his tongue-lashing.  Rick does a great job at explaining what’s going on.  Again, I appreciate his time and his knowledge.

What’s going on – News Roundup

From Steve at Washington Monthly:

* Five American troops were killed this morning in Mosul as a result of a “massive” suicide truck bombing. It was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in over a year.

* Negotiations with the Somali pirates continue, as Richard Phillips’ effort at an escape proved unsuccessful.

* Limbaugh tries to connect the pirates with ACORN. What a weirdo.

* President Obama sees “glimmers of hope” in the economy, but reiterated his belief that we have a long way to go.

* Robert Mugabe’s cronies are seeking amnesty deals by abducting and torturing opposition leaders.

* The Obama administration’s efforts in invoking the state secrets claim continues to be an ongoing source of deep disappointment. [Read more →]

Encapsulated Right Wing Craziness

If you are not going to be serious I think that Sean Hannity and the others should be relagated to the Comedy Channel.  Nope we can’t do that.  The Comedy Channel is actually funny.

This is not tyranny — you just lost an election

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show has an excellent segment in which he points out a lot of the craziness, hyperbole, hyper-inflated rhetoric and lies that have been emanating from the Right. I’ve talked about this almost exclusively over the last several days. I continue to be amazed that anyone believes that Michelle Bachmann is not the most irresponsible congresswoman in America.

Thom Hartmann made an extremely interesting comment yesterday. He was verbally excoriating the Obama administration for their seeming disregard for the Fourth Amendment (“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”) Thom Hartmann, like Glenn Greenwald, saw the filing by the Justice Department (late last week) as an expansion of the Bush administration’s state secrets and, according to Glenn, “a brand new ‘sovereign immunity’ claim of breathtaking scope — never before advanced, even by the Bush administration, — that the Patriot Act bars any lawsuits of any kind for illegal government surveillance unless there is “willful disclosure” of the illegally intercepted communications.”  (It seems like I’m getting hopelessly off the point but I’m not.)  Thom Hartmann said that this is something that the Right should be legitimately upset about. For some reason, the talking heads on the right seem to be fixated on the Second Amendment and completely ignoring the Fourth. This is something where there are genuine facts.  There is a brief but has been filed by Obama’s Justice Department. Yet, this is barely been covered on Fox News (to the best of my knowledge).

So, we have a legitimate issue which the Right should be completely outraged over and they’re not.  On the other hand, we have an issue that is completely made up (Obama is going to take your gun) and the Right are completely losing their minds.

Eric Boehlert calls out Beck and others

Yep, I’m still talking about the Pittsburgh shooting. There have been many progressives who have pointed out the link between the Right’s fanning the flames of conspiracy theorists (e.g. “Obama is going to take your guns.”) Most Americans recognize stupidity when they see it. Unfortunately, these are trying times. Some Americans are more susceptible to fear mongering and hate. Some of us are worried about losing our jobs and don’t know whom to blame. Some of us have lost their jobs and can’t find new ones. We want to blame someone. Some Americans look at the new president and say that he is different and, therefore, he must think differently. This is where it all starts. Then they go and pick up a book by Ann Coulter or Michael Savage (as Mr. Poplawski did). These authors clearly state liberals are to blame.

I’m all for political discourse. I think everyone has the right to stand up and talk about what he or she believes. Yet, if you are listening to what is on the airwaves, you hear them spouting things that have no basis in reality. I’m not talking about shows on the Sci-Fi Channel. I’m talking about supposed “news” shows on programs like Fox News.

Eric Boehlert from Media Matters has an excellent article which was posted yesterday. It outlines a lot of the craziness that the right wing has been spouting on Fox News. (I’ve reprinted some of the article below.)

Jones also noted with excitement that Fox News’ Glenn Beck had recently begun warning about the looming New World Order on his show, just like Jones had for years. “It is great!” cheered the conspiracist. (Like Jones, Beck recently warned viewers that “the Second Amendment is under fire.”) Concluding the interview, Fox News’ Napolitano announced “it’s absolutely been a pleasure” listening to Jones’ insights.

We don’t know if Poplawski tuned in to watch Jones’ star turn for Fox News last month. But is there any doubt that Fox News is playing an increasingly erratic and dangerous game by embracing the type of paranoid insurrection rhetoric that people like Poplawski are now acting on? By stoking dark fears about the ominous ruins that await an Obama America, by ratcheting up irresponsible back-to-the-wall scenarios, Fox News has waded into a territory that no other news organization has ever dared to exploit.

What Fox News is now programming on a daily (unhinged) basis is unprecedented in the history of American television, especially in the form of Beck’s program. Night after night, week after week, Beck rails against the president while denouncing him or his actions, alternately, as Marxist, socialist, or fascist. He felt entirely comfortable pondering whether the federal government, under the auspices of FEMA, was building concentration camps to round up Americans in order to institute totalitarian rule. (It wasn’t until this week that Beck was finally able to “debunk” the FEMA conspiracy theory.) And that’s when Beck wasn’t gaming out bloody scenarios for the coming civil war against Obama-led tyranny. In just a few shorts months, Beck raced to the head of Fox News’ militia media movement.

Just prior to the Pittsburgh massacre, Beck’s often bizarre on-air performances, in which his rants against the Obama administration’s dark forces were mixed in with his tearful proclamations of love of country, had turned him into a highly rated laughingstock. “That is a shaky cat,” Dennis Miller recently giggled while describing Beck. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough broke into hysterics after a montage of Beck’s most weepy moments. And TV satirists have had a field day at the Fox News host’s expense. (Stephen Colbert: “Crank up the crazy and rip off the knob!”)

But I’m not sure people should be laughing. (more… )

Tarheels destroy competition

The North Carolina Tar Heels simply destroyed their competition. There’s no other way to put it. I thought this was going to be a close game. Boy, was I wrong. It appeared to me that North Carolina consciously, over the last three games especially, worked to play almost perfect basketball from the opening tip-off. They gashed opposing teams in the first five to 10 minutes and opened up huge leads. In tonight’s game, the story was all about turnovers. The Tar Heels had nine steals (Lawson had eight). The Michigan State Spartans had 21 turnovers. That’s the game right there. This game was over by halftime.

Congratulations to the North Carolina Tar Heels — National Champions.

A word for the Michigan State Spartans. They played incredibly good basketball to get to the finals.  Their coach, Tom Izzo, should be commended for keeping his team together and encouraging them to play together as a team. (The North Carolina coach, Roy Williams, will go down in basketball lore as one of the best who has ever coached the game, in my opinion.)

Hardball’s David Shuster looks at right-wing confusion

This video ties in very nicely with one of my earlier posts on the Pittsburgh shooting. Leaders on the Right are taking advantage of the fear and isolation some on the Right are feeling. There is a huge difference between wanting to regulate assault weapons and taking everyone’s gun away.

Watch the video (From Media Matters):

Charles Blow from the NYT spend a good deal of time absorbing right-wing media. Here’s what he found:

Lately I’ve been consuming as much conservative media as possible (interspersed with shots of Pepto-Bismol) to get a better sense of the mind and mood of the right. My read: They’re apocalyptic. They feel isolated, angry, betrayed and besieged. And some of their “leaders” seem to be trying to mold them into militias.

At first, it was entertaining — just harmless, hotheaded expostulation. Of course, there were the garbled facts, twisted logic and veiled hate speech. But what did I expect, fair and balanced? It was like walking through an ideological house of mirrors. The distortions can be mildly amusing at first, but if I stay too long it makes me sick.

But, it’s not all just harmless talk. For some, their disaffection has hardened into something more dark and dangerous. They’re talking about a revolution.

Some simply lace their unscrupulous screeds with loaded language about the fall of the Republic. We have to “rise up” and “take back our country.” Others have been much more explicit. (more… )

Huge earthquake in Italy

A large earthquake has hit Italy. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit around the ancient town of L’Aquila. Current figures suggest that over 90 people died and over 1500 people have been injured. This, of course, has put a large strain on Italy’s emergency response system. I’m sure that international aid has already been offered.

The backstory, which I found on Crooks and Liars, is that an Italian scientist has been monitoring tremors in the area and suggested that there was to be a large earthquake relatively soon, but he was silenced by politicians. Read more here.

Pittsburgh Shooting

There are a lot of things that I don’t understand in this world. I don’t understand why some people are willing to beleive lies rather than the truth. There are some of these fringe right-wing folks who believe that Democrats are going to pass some type of legislation that will take their guns. The fact that Barack Obama hasn’t ever said anything like this only makes these guys more paranoid.

From C&L (excellent post):

We’re gathering more information about Richard Polawski, the 23-year-old man who decided to kill four Pittsburgh police officers and wound five others because it appears he was afraid they — at the behest of the Obama administration — were going to take his guns away. (Dude, they definitely are now.)

Seems he was laying in wait in a carefully planned ambush:

Richard Poplawski, 23, met officers at the doorway and shot two of them in the head immediately, Harper said. An officer who tried to help the two also was killed.

Poplawski, armed with an assault rifle and two other guns, then held police at bay for four hours as the fallen officers were left bleeding nearby, their colleagues unable to reach them, according to police and witnesses. More than 100 rounds were fired by the SWAT teams and Poplawski, Harper said.

Poplawski_b921c.JPGAnd he was paranoid about the Obama administration taking people’s guns away — even though, of course, there have been no indications of any such plans beyond NRA rantings:

Poplawski feared “the Obama gun ban that’s on the way” and “didn’t like our rights being infringed upon,” said Edward Perkovic, his best friend.

Violence at NATO

France knows how to throw a party, but this party seems to have gotten out of control. The NATO summit has been surrounded by violence.

From AP:

Black-clad protesters attacked police and set a customs station ablaze Saturday on a bridge linking France and Germany that served hours earlier as the backdrop for a show of unity by NATO leaders.

AP photographers saw other protesters storm a nearby Ibis hotel, setting fires and pilfering alcohol from its bar.

Stacks of old tires were also set ablaze, unleashing thick plumes of black smoke that could be seen from across the river. Near the bonfire was a sign welcoming visitors to Strasbourg. (more… )

Good smooth jazz

Now there are some people that believe that smooth jazz equals elevator music. I don’t think that’s the case. I think you can have both improvisation and sophistication in smooth jazz. This is a clip I found that features George Duke (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitar) and Marcus Miller (bass). It is melodic. It is soulful. It is full of improvisation. Enjoy this groove.

Limbaugh continues

In radio and television, Americans love to hear and see conflict. Rush Limbaugh has served up controversy in big, huge dump truck loads. Earlier, he stated that he did not want Barack Obama to succeed. Just in case anyone was not paying attention, he has reiterated that statement multiple times. Yesterday, he commented on Gordon Brown’s (Prime Minister of England) polite commentary on Barack Obama’s first 70 days. This is typical Rush Limbaugh. Rick Sanchez introduces this clip.

Jobless rate hits 8.5%

More bad news, though not unexpected. Here are the numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statisticss.

Figure from Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.

From EPI:

The March 2009 employment situation report, released this morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed that the labor market continued its free fall in March. Unemployment increased sharply to 8.5%, its highest level since 1983, and payroll employment declined by 663,000 jobs, an average of over 30,000 jobs lost every work day in March. This was the third steepest decline in fifteen straight months of job losses. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the economy has shed 5.1 million jobs, including 2.7 million jobs lost in the last four months alone. “This morning’s employment report offered no hint of light at the end of the tunnel. Instead, it showed that the labor market is still in its darkest months,” said economist Heidi Shierholz.

Obama’s budget passes

Republicans are mad. Really mad. After all of their bluster, the Democrats manage to stay together and pass a budget. Again, not one Republican vote.  It seems to me that this is a remarkable feat. Democrats don’t seem to stick together on much of anything, but somehow they managed to stick together on the budget.  President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi are to be congratulated for guiding this through.  All of the talk of the Blue Dog (fiscal conservative) Democrats in the Senate and House went nowhere, I guess.  Maybe they were just puffed up by the media.  I don’t know.  All I know is that there wasn’t the fierce hand-to-hand combat that some had predicted.

From NYT:

The House and Senate approved budgets of about $3.5 trillion for the government on Thursday with no Republican support, a sign of deep partisan tensions likely to color Congressional efforts to enact major policy initiatives sought by President Obama.

On the heels of House approval of its spending plan for 2010, the Senate voted 55 to 43 shortly before midnight to adopt a similar budget after a day spent laboring over politically tinged amendments that did little to change a fiscal blueprint generally in keeping with Mr. Obama’s ambitious agenda.

Democrats said the two budgets, which will have to be reconciled after a two-week Congressional recess, cleared the way for health care, energy and education overhauls pushed by the new president. The Democrats said the budgets reversed what they portrayed as the failed economic approach of the Bush administration and Republican-led Congresses. (more… )

Dallas Police Officer Resigns

There is no doubt in my mind that it is extremely difficult to be a police officer these days. All major police departments, including Dallas, have video cameras mounted in the squad cars. No matter what you do, you will be second guessed. I guess, overall, this is not a bad thing.

Ryan Moats, Houston Texans star running back, was speeding to the hospital with his wife in the car. His wife’s mother was dying. He was pulled over just in front of the hospital parking lot. (Watch the video.)

What unfolded appears to be inexcusable. (This is been picked up by major blogs.)  Some will point to this video and see racism. I’m not sure that’s true. I think that this police officer has trouble controlling his own emotions. I think that he has some authority issues. I feel extremely sorry for him. I feel awful about Ryan Moats and his family. His mother-in-law did die while he was being confronted by the police officer. This very easily could’ve been something else entirely. Imagine a police officer actually helping Ryan Moats get to the hospital. What would have been lost? It’s extremely sad.

From the Dallas Morning News: Dallas police Officer Robert Powell resigned Wednesday, a week after he garnered national notoriety for detaining an NFL player outside a hospital where his mother-in-law lay dying.

“With a heavy heart and great sadness, I resigned from the Dallas Police Department this morning,” he said in a statement issued by his attorneys. “I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers, and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward.”

The resignation won’t end the internal-affairs investigation into Powell’s actions, police officials said.

The officer was accused of misconduct after he stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats for rolling through a red light while rushing his wife and her family to the hospital the night of March 17. Squad-car video shows Powell berating Moats during a 13-minute episode while his mother-in-law died. He publicly apologized last week for adding to the family’s grief.

Blago may be looking at some significant time

I’m in Seattle for a conference. There’s nothing like being packed in an airplane for a four an half hour plane ride.

Rod Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois, has been indicted on 16 felony counts. The charges include racketeering, conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion and making false statements. There was some speculation that his wife may be indicted also. That may happen, but it did not happen today. The Chicago Sun-Times has a very lengthy article on this indictment. The actual indictment can be read here.

The opening paragraph of the indictment reads:  “Since 2002, even before he was first elected governor that November, and continuing until he was arrested on Dec. 9, 2008, former Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and a circle of his closest aides and advisors allegedly engaged in a wide-ranging scheme to deprive the people of Illinois of honest government, according to a 19-count indictment returned today by a federal grand jury. Blagojevich, 52, of Chicago, was charged with 16 felony counts, including racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion and making false statements to federal agents. He allegedly used his office in numerous matters involving state appointments, business, legislation and pension fund investments to seek or obtain such financial benefits as money, campaign contributions, and employment for himself and others, in exchange for official actions, including trying to leverage his authority to appoint a United States Senator, announced Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.”
