Lou Dobbs exits stage left
I know that I’m not anywhere close to the first, nor will I be the last person to talk about Lou Dobbs. He’s been a fixture on CNN for a long while. There was a time, way before we had heard of Barack Obama or even before George W. Bush seriously considered running for president, when CNN ruled the airwaves and Lou Dobbs was part of that kingdom. I thought Dobbs was a respected journalist.
Something happened. I don’t know if he was in a car crash and hit his head or the real Dobbs was abducted by aliens and this is a clone, but Lou Dobbs has changed over the years. He went from being a thoughtful, hard-hitting journalist to something else entirely. He wasn’t Sean Hannity or Bill O’Reilly, but something just short of that. I first noticed it on the subject of immigration. This is when I first noticed that he was over the top (Mexico was our enemy). He didn’t even try to be objective or present anything thoughtful on immigration. He compromised his journalistic integrity over this immigration issue. He praised the folks at Hazleton, Pennsylvania for their ordinance which targeted undocumented immigrants (economic refugees) without revealing that he had pumped money into the town’s legal defense fund. Dobbs was also part of the birther movement.
You’ll never see me celebrating when someone loses their job. Jobs are extremely hard to come by these days. It’s kind of sad to see the downfall of someone who I thought had significant integrity, but that was over a decade ago.
