Scrooge & Republican Social Policy

Leech_ghostpresent_big Scrooge & Republican Social Policy

The following is from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This book was published in 1843.

It does seem that the attitude and policy suggestions offered by Ebenezer Scrooge in response to a solicitation for charity at Christmas, would fit in well with Republican and conservative social policy in modern America.

From the book— (Don’t miss the last paragraph. It sums it all up quite well. I’ve put it in bold to further beat you over the head with my point.)

“…..This lunatic, in letting Scrooge’s nephew out, had let two other people in. They were portly gentlemen, pleasant to behold, and now stood, with their hats off, in Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in their hands, and bowed to him.

“Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,” said one of the gentlemen, referring to his list. “Have I the pleasure of addressing Mr Scrooge, or Mr Marley?”

“Mr Marley has been dead these seven years,” Scrooge replied. “He died seven years ago, this very night.”

“We have no doubt his liberality is well represented by his surviving partner,” said the gentleman, presenting his credentials.

It certainly was; for they had been two kindred spirits. At the ominous word “liberality”, Scrooge frowned, and shook his head, and handed the credentials back.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

Conquest

carnival_conquest_cruiseship Conquest

The Carnival Cruise ship Conquest is a smoke-belching, disease- producing monstrosity.

I saw this ship today docked at Galveston, Texas. It was letting off a lot of dirty smoke into the air. Here is a link about cruise ship pollution.

Why is this ship called the Conquest? I don’t know. Much of the native population of the Caribbean was exterminated some time ago. Who is left to conquer? Here is a link to Caribbean slavery. Here is link to smallpox. Here is a link to venereal disease. What the ship should be called is the Tax Avoidance. Tax avoidance is why it is registered in Panama.

On board ship, passengers may contract Norwalk virus. This affliction can also be termed viral gastroenteritis. There have been repeated outbreaks of Norwalk virus on cruise ships because people don’t wash their hands. The passengers make each other sick.

Here is a link about low pay for the crew on cruise ships.

Here are some real facts about Jamaica instead of the little you see when you take a cruise that stops in that nation.

Here is a story about comments Pope John Paul II made pertaining to the exploitive aspects of tourism. Here is another link to the same subject.

Dems - New Ideas

What is the purpose of government?  I have discussed this topic with liberals and conservatives.  It is my opinion, that the government is to help those people who need a little help.  A little help.  The government should also keep us safe.  That’s about it.

The Center for American Progress unveiled new ideas to move America forward.  Their 3 main points

  • Opportunity for all
  • Promoting a Just and Secure World
  • Building Strong Communities

Wal-Mart and a living wage

Chicago City Council has just voted that Wal-Mart has to pay a living wage.  What a concept, a living wage.

The Economic Policy Institute has a nice article on Wal-Mart and the living wage.
