Let’s here it for Duane Jackson

We must do more for our veterans because they do so much for us!!

From NYT:

Even in Times Square, where little seems unusual, the Nissan Pathfinder parked just off Broadway on the south side of 45th Street — engine running, hazard lights flashing, driver nowhere to be found — looked suspicious to the sidewalk vendors who regularly work this area.

And it was the keen eyes of at least two of them — both disabled Vietnam War veterans who say they are accustomed to alerting local police officers to pickpockets and hustlers — that helped tip off the authorities to the Pathfinder, illegally and unusually parked next to their merchandise of inexpensive handbags and $2.99 “I Love NY” T-shirts.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, the vendors — Lance Orton and Duane Jackson, who both served during the Vietnam War and now rely on special sidewalk vending privileges for disabled veterans — told nearby officers about the Pathfinder, which had begun filling with smoke and then emitted sparks and popping sounds. From BnB:

Imagine this: you’re in Times Square on a Saturday night getting your T-shirt hustle on. You see a Nissan Pathfinder with smoke coming out the windows. What do you do?
Well, if you are Vietnam vet Lance Orton, you flag down a cop and say, “Something ain’t right.” (Okay, I paraphrased). The mounted officer detected the smell of gunpowder and Times Square was evacuated. Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Whoever put it together was NOT PLAYING. Let’s face it, that could’ve serious jacked up some stuff.

Mr. Orton finds himself a reluctant hero, he wants no publicity: (From NY Times)

“I’m not going to say nothing, I’m not going to say nothing,” he said when first approached by a gaggle of reporters. As he walked down the street, employees from Junior’s restaurant stood outside applauding him. He briefly entered the restaurant before heading toward 44th Street.

He walked with a limp, had a cane, wore a white fedora and had a hoop earring in his right ear. When asked if he was proud of his actions, he said: “Of course, man. I’m a veteran. What do you think?”

The vendor said that he had served during the Vietnam War and had been selling wares on the street for about 20 years.

“I don’t have too much of a choice, nobody’s giving me a job,” he said.

He said that he was reluctant to speak with members of the media because they had twisted his words when they interviewed him in recent years.

He got into the back seat of the taxi, took off his hat and used it to fan his face.

Before he left, he was asked what he had to say to New Yorkers.

“See something, say something,” he said.

There’s a deeper lesson here if anyone is looking for it. Dude serves his country, comes home and has to sell T-shirts on the street to make a living. Without even hesitating, he serves his country again. Amen, Mr. Orton. Hey Bloomberg, cut the brother a check… seriously. He’s earned a little “thank you” from the City of New York.

Obama, Russia and Nuclear Weapons

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

If you had your eyes glued to the TV and you were taking notes, you probably still missed it. The mainstream media seemed not to want to cover any substantive discussions about President Obama, Russia and loose nuclear weapons. I must admit, I did not even think about loose nuclear weapons. Currently, I’m reading Ron Suskind’s book, The Way of the World, which discusses an incident in 2006, in which Georgian officials capture a two-bit criminal who is smuggling uranium!

Smuggling uranium? One of the things that the Bush administration talked about (all the time) was weapons of mass destruction. We had to keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. In 2002, ”I don’t have any doubt that al Qaeda was pursuing nuclear, biological and chemical warfare capabilities. It’s not our judgment at the moment that they were that far along, but I have no doubt that they were seeking to do so.” This is what U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton told CNN.  What did the Bush administration do to secure loose nuclear weapons, especially in the former Soviet republic? I know, search your databanks. I couldn’t think of anything either.

In January 2008, Sam Nunn, Henry Kissinger, George Schultz and William Perry wrote an Op-Ed in the WSJ which stated, “In October 2007, we convened veterans of the past six administrations, along with a number of other experts on nuclear issues, for a conference at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. There was general agreement about the importance of the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons as a guide to our thinking about nuclear policies, and about the importance of a series of steps that will pull us back from the nuclear precipice.  The U.S. and Russia, which possess close to 95% of the world’s nuclear warheads, have a special responsibility, obligation and experience to demonstrate leadership, but other nations must join.” This is especially nice since Kissinger et al., were the ones that promoted the arms race three or four decades ago. But, the reasoning behind their recommendation is now becoming very clear. We can’t control every kilo of nuclear material. There is a bipartisan agreement in Congress to get rid of nuclear weapons.

Now for some more bone chilling realism. Where in Georgia did this uranium come from? South Ossetia. If that doesn’t sound familiar, it should. This was the region wanting to break away from Georgia during the 2008 presidential campaign. Remember John McCain declaring, “We are all Georgians now.”

South Ossetia is no bigger than Long Island. Yet in 2003, Georgian border guards caught another smuggler with 200 grams of weapons grade uranium. Now this is what bothers me. These are the two-bit criminals. We know that Russia has huge crime syndicates that are run by Al Capone types. If these nobodies can get their hands on weapons grade uranium then you know the big bosses sure can get their hands on whatever they want. Al Qaeda just needs to name the price and dirty bombs are going to be set off in a city near you. By the way, are the Georgia border guards better or worse than our American border guards? Because we know we only catch a fraction of the drugs that come into this country. Does Georgia just catch a fraction of the uranium is leaving their country?

In my opinion, President Obama set down and spoke with the Russian President Medvedev about these, loose nukes. This had to have been their number one priority. We cannot be serious about trying to stop the next terrorist attack without securing nuclear weapons. Forget the photo ops, the smiles and handshakes. If we can not secure nuclear weapons, none of that matters.

Ricin in Las Vegas?

About 2 years ago, there was a scare at the University of Texas at Austin. Ricin was thought to be in a dorm room. If I’m not mistaken the initial tests were positive for ricin but the final tests were not positive. Now, almost exactly 2 years later, ricin turns up in Las Vegas. Vitals of ricin were found in a man’s motel room. The man is in critical condition at a local hospital.

There are tons of questions. I have searched the web. Authorities have not released the man’s name. This is thought not to be a terrorist attack. I would question how authorities came to that conclusion. The man had vitals of the stuff in his room. This is not cocaine. Ricin has no other uses that I know of. So, what’s up?

There is a famous case in which an infamous 1978 incident, Georgi Markov, a Bulgarian writer and journalist who was living in London, was killed when a man attacked him with an umbrella that injected a ricin pellet under his skin.

Ricin is a very deadly poison. The CDC has the facts.

From the Las Vegas Sun:

Vials found in the motel room of a man hospitalized in critical condition tested positive for the deadly toxin ricin, authorities said Friday. There was no indication of any link to terrorist activity, Las Vegas police Deputy Chief Kathy Suey said at a press conference.

The man was admitted to Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas in critical condition on Feb. 14, hospital spokeswoman Naomi Jones said. Suey said he had made an emergency call for help because of breathing problems. His name was not made public. (more…)

Iraqi Chemical Weapons found!

Umm.  Yep, they found the chemical weapons that the Right has been hollerin’ about for the past 4 – 6 years.  Unfortunately, they found them in New York.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confesses

Torture

I love my country. There is no place that I would rather be than the US. This love causes me to be very critical of the country that I love. This brings me to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. We know that this guy has been tortured by the US and our allies. This we know. We also know that Bin Laden is probably the only target that is of higher value. We tortured this guy until he either became a babbling idiot or told us what we wanted to hear. The fact that he confessed means nothing. Secondly, Al Qaeda is proud of what they did. So, confessing is again no big deal. This is a sad day for America. A sad day for justice.

Now, for those of you who think that I love the terrorists, you’re wrong. Don’t even bother to post a comment with that noise. I’m all for chasing down terrorists. If they resist arrest then shoot them. One shot right between the eyes. Bang! If we do arrest them then they should be treated (as should anyone in US custody) with dignity and respect. This is the moral high ground and I refuse to give it up. These jihadists are not going to force me to act like them.

From CNN.com:

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, admitted to those attacks and numerous others during a U.S. military hearing on Saturday, according to an edited transcript of the hearing released by the Pentagon Wednesday.

In a statement from him, read by a U.S. military representative, he said, “I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z.”

The transcript continues with the list of operations he was responsible for, including the Richard Reid shoe bomber attempt to blow up an airliner over the Atlantic Ocean, the Bali nightclub bombing in Indonesia, the 1993 World Trade Center attack and other attacks that were foiled. (more…)

GAO reports nuclear stuff easy to get hands on

I almost laugh when I hear Bush or Cheney saying that they are doing all that they can. Really? How are our oil refineries being protected? Nuclear waste how is that being transported across America? Do those trucks and trains have a military escort?  We are even worse at helping other countries to secure their nuclear material.

From MSNBC.com:

International inspectors working in the former Soviet republic of Georgia last summer tracked down dangerous radiological materials in an abandoned military complex.

It was an important mission. But a new report by U.S. government watchdogs says a parallel effort overseas by the U.S. Department of Energy has made only “limited progress securing many of the most dangerous sources” — waste disposal sites and abandoned generators across Russia, each with enough material for several devastating dirty bombs. State of Denial

The NY Times broke this story yesterday.  Here’s Olbermann’s take.

Rummy on the offensive

So, I’m morally confused?  I do not think so.  I understand that Iraq has descended into chaos because of our lack of action and our mismanagement.  I also understand that there were no terrorist acts on going in Iraq before our presence there.  I understand that we’ve provided little or no security to the local residents who endure kidnappings, rapes, assaults and other atrocities on a daily basis because of our lack of security.

Harris Poll – 50% of Americans are lost in space

  • Half of Americans believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction
  • 64% of Americans believe that Saddam Hussein had “strong links” to Al Qaeda

I don’t understand.  Literally hundreds of reports have been published over the last two to three years stating Iraq did not have and does not have weapons of mass destruction.  The power of the presidency to inform or to deceive is amazing.

Downing Street Memo

Representative John Conyers continues to fight

Representative Conyers suggests that the Bush administration has broken the law.  Really?  Is this a surprise to anyone?  I guess, my question is-what do we do with this report that suggests 23 laws have been broken?

Bush adminstration counter attacks

Bush started the blitz on Friday with a speech on Veterans Day. “While it’s perfectly legitimate to criticize my decision or the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of how that war began,” Bush said. Today Steve Hadley, national security advisor, who really hasn’t said much during his 4 years in the Bush White House, held a press conference on Thursday. Now, I really don’t know how many press conferences Hadley has held but I don’t think that it has been that many. He supported the president and stated that Democrats are revising history. Everyone had seen the same intelligence and EVERYONE came to the same conclusion – Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. NOT!! There are several examples of how the intelligence was spun for Congress. Both congress and the president get daily intelligence reports. The President’s famous August 6th PDB had more pointed information including that Al Qaeda had planned to hijack planes. The Congressional version was missing this line. The National Intelligence Estimate which was developed by the CIA did not come up with the conclusion that Saddam was a threat to America. They stated that Saddam would only use WMD if attacked. The Bush Administration is spinning their previous spin. This is great!
