The Errington Thompson Show, 12-27-08

This is the final show of 2008. I have some great Christmas music to share. I start the show with short review of the week’s news… So Bush, who almost never gives a pardon, gives a pardon and then says he’s sorry, that he’s made a mistake and is taking the pardon back! After some more news, I interview Kyle Monson, editor of PC Magazine, and we discuss some of the great games that are out there for Play Station, XBox 360 and Wii. This show is a lot of fun. Enjoy!

The Errington Thompson Show 12-06-08

Since this was recorded on December 6th, I start off by going back to a clip from FDR’s famous address to Congress about the Pearl Harbor attack. I then bring up more allegations against Halliburton and KBR. Simply put, KBR (Kellogg, Brown and Root) has not been doing its job to protect our troops. The conglomerate has been cutting corners and exposing our troops to rancid food (more information here and here).

You know times are bad when Harvard’s endowment loses $8 billion in a quarter. In one quarter!!

The top story of the week was job loss533, 000 jobs were lost during the month of November. We have lost 1.9 million jobs since the start of this recession (last December). That’s almost two million jobs in one year.

My guests are Rick Newman of US News and World Report and Edward E. Cornwell, MD, chairman of Howard University. Rick and I discuss the auto industry and consider why they can’t seem to get any love from Capital Hill. My great friend, Dr. Cornwell, and I get into healthcare reform. He talks about some of the studies he has done which suggest there are some signifcant healthcare disparities.

The Errington Thompson Show 11-29-08

Rushing out of the house, I left my computer on top of the washing machine. This makes things tough, since my computer is important. I play recorded segments and sound effects off of it… so I was in a panic. No worries. I still have a great show for you. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Dave called in and mentioned David Stockton. Here’s an article on David Stockton.

In the radio show, I announce my exciting new podcast contest.

Subscribe to my podcast (see the sign-up box in the right hand column) and you are entered to win an Amazon.com $50 gift certificate. Everyone who subscribes will be entered to win. I also discuss the auto industry. At one point, I get an interesting question about the whether Republicans are going to try to bust the UAW and will they try and do the same thing with nurses when we focus on health care?

Enjoy.

The Errington Thompson Show 11-22-2008

Sorry about the sound quality. (Agnes, my fill-in producer, clearly doesn’t love me.) This time we cover the jobless rate, which has hit a 16-year high. Don’t forget our being told that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.” The automakers have been turned away so that they may go back and do their homework. A federal judge has ordered the Bush administration to release five Algerian nationals.

My special guests are Greg Dworkin of the Daily Kos, who is a pediatric pulmonologist. We go over health care reform and then I switch gears and talk with local author Cecil Bothwell about his latest book,
Pure Bunkum - Reporting on the Life and Crimes of Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford

.

The Errington Thompson Show 11-15-08

This is another great show. We discuss Henry Paulson’s change of mind. Now he isn’t going to buy up “toxic” assets. The market didn’t really like his idea and it tanked. The inauguration fever is going crazy. I lay out some foreclosure facts…(check craigslist…man, the foreclosure numbers are bad!) Bush has the G-20 summit but everyone wants to talk to Barack Obama. :-) I speak with Brian Katulis, an expert on the Middle East from the Center for American Progress. We discuss Iraq and Afghanistan, where it is clear that the levels of violence are down but political resolution still hasn’t happened.

Enjoy the show.

The Errington Thompson Show 11-08-2008

As we know, Barack Obama won the election and it wasn’t close. John McCain gave a very gracious speech. In this week’s show, I interview my good friend Bill Scher from Campaign for America’s Future and the editor of BuzzFlash, Mark Karlin. I try to start at the beginning. Mark is from Chicago, Obama’s home turf, and he explains how our future president made this remarkable climb to the top. Bill Scher was at the 2004 convention. He was, like me, blown away by Barack Obama’s 2004 convention speech. This is a great discussion and a great summary of what happened.

BTW, now nine people have signed up for the contest. Just sign up and you too can have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate for Amazon.com. More information here.

The Errington Thompson Show - 11-01-08

This really is one of the best shows. In it, I review the polls and look at this race as any other thoughtful person would. Obama had substance, where McCain relied on personal attacks. Mark Karlin from Buzzflash.com stops by. Karlin is based in Chicago and has followed Barack Obama from early in his career. Senator Claire McCaskillthat’s right , Senator…was in North Carolina earlier this week and we talk about the election. We both are hoping that North Carolina and Missouri will turn Blue!

The Errington Thompson Show 10-24-08

What a show!!! Thom Hartmann is in the house. We discuss how Barack Obama will restore the middle class. It’s a great discussion. Mark Karlin from BuzzFlash, too, is in the house!! Mark lives in Chicago and we talk about current news and Barack Obama. Aaron wishes me a Happy Birthday…one day early. Close…and I give him a thumbs-up. Alan Greenspan testifies on Capitol Hill that he was wrong but he doesn’t give us any solutions. FEMA is still handing out toxic formaldehyde trailers, this time in Cedar Rapids. There’s a lot more - Enjoy!

Special Edition: Errington Thompson Show - Was the 2004 Election Stolen?

This is an excellent interview I had with Steven Freeman back in 2006, just before the mid-term elections. Steven Freeman holds a Ph.D. from MIT’s Sloan School of Management and is one of the nation’s experts on our voting system. We discuss his book, Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen?

I kick off the conversation by discussing electronic voting. Steven uses an excellent analogy, suggesting electronic voting is like handing your vote to someone behind the curtain. In this Wizard of Oz analogy, as a voter, you are therefore dependent upon that person behind the curtain to cast a vote correctly for you. Without your knowing it, they could change the vote or simply not vote at all. There’s no way for you to know. Electronic voting is a black box. We also discuss a Princeton study which showed how easy it is to hack into these electronic voting machines. Very troubling.

I discuss other forms of voting as well, but I thought it was important to bring exit polls into the discussion. In 2004, there were several prevailing theories (lies) about exit polls. Even if you were paying attention, you might’ve missed the spin. First, we were told that exit polls were not all that accurate…wrong. Dr. Freeman produces plenty of data in his book and in our discussion, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that exit polls are extremely accurate. As a matter of fact, exit polls are used by international watchdog groups to monitor voting in places like the Ukraine and Georgia (the country, not the state…although the state could use a little monitoring). We were then told that the exit polls were preferentially answered by Democrats and not by Republicans. Of course, the data showed the opposite to be true. (Robert Kennedy, Jr’s excellent article from 2006)

Also, Rachel Maddow chatted with Robert Kennedy, Jr about election fraud on her show. I guess that this is an example of what was old (2000 and 2004) is new again (2008).

This is an excellent discussion.  Enjoy!

The Errington Thompson Show 10-18-08

There is too much to talk about. Brain freeze! Joe the Plumber. Another debate. ACORN is the root of all evil, according to John McCain. They will single-handedly bring down our demcracy. The Obama camp has filed a formal request to look into connections among the White House, The RNC and the DOJ. To top that off, I have Markos Moulitsas as my special guest. We talk about his new book Talking on the System, weanie Democrats and much, much more. Enjoy.

The Errington Thompson Show 10-11-08

I’ll have the rest of my show up in a couple of hours, but I thought you might like my closing segment. In it, I discuss radio talk show host James T. Harris who stood up at a McCain rally and begged the Senator to take it to Obama. I also discuss the failure of the Republican philosophy. The middle class has been left out in the cold. The election is should be about who can bring the middle class in out of the cold! Who has the ideas to keep jobs here and not overseas? Jobs are the key. They will drive the economy out of recession. Enjoy.

The Errington Thompson Show 10-04-08

Great show. I talk about the economy with Rick Newman from US News and World Report. Matt Mattan from WWNC’s Take a Stand drops in. We talk about all of this debt…and who’s going to pay for it?

The Errington Thompson Show 9-20-08

I started the show by trying to convince my producer to apply for a bailout loan from our government. Since we seem to giving out money to Wall Street, why can’t we apply? Another lingering question: What is the Gramm-Leach-Bliley act? Then, Bev Hoffman from Tents for Hope discussed Darfur with us. The greatness of the blog DailyKos comes from their editors, including Joan McCarter who joined us to talk about painting the West blue. It’s a great show. Enjoy.

The Errington Thompson Show 9-27-08

Now here’s a great show for you. We discussed the bailout where we saw an initial compromise, then we it disappeared. I spent a good deal of time discussing the first presidential debate. My special guest was Kurt Eichenwald, a great friend and best selling author (The Informant, Conspiracy of Fools). Finally, we discussed the financial crisis. I received a great call from a guy who just isn’t buying any of this from Bush or Paulson.

The Errington Thompson Show 9-13-08

This show starts with an update on Hurricane Ike. Then we move on to sex, drugs and the Department of the Interior. And, of course, we ask “What’s going on the economy?” I have Heidi Shierholz from the Economic Policy Institute joins me to discuss some of the economic numbers. The bottom line is that supply side economics doesn’t work. I am then joined by Rick Newman, Chief Business Correspondent from US News and World Report. We discuss this bailout syndrome that our government seems to be suffering from. This is a great show.
